Editorial

Q. If Bill 203 was created to stop street racing, why are the bulk of these accused not racing anyone? How can one person race?

A. Th ese are not racers, they are speeders.

Q. Why did all these people decide to drive 50km over the limit in October? Are the police trying to tell us that no one drove this fast in the past? Wasn’t 50 km over considered speeding, if so why weren’t the police catching them then?

A. People have been driving 50 km over for years. Just try driving at 120km up the 400 and see how many people blow by you as if you are parked. It is the new much higher fi nes that have the police doing their jobs.

(Who says this isn’t just a cash grab)

Q. If you are one of the people whose car is impounded what is the cost?

A. Depends on where you live. In Bellville the towing charge will be $48 with the impound fee being $10 per day for a total of $118. In West Toronto the towing fee will be $118 and daily impound $32 for a total of $342. Now add in the cab ride home and any other expense you incur while waiting out your suspension. If we round it out to $500 per instance and assume only half will be convicted, we are looking at an out of pocket expense of $250,000.

Q. How much money will the politicians gain through this program?

A. Th e minimum fi ne for a fi rst time conviction is $2000, maximum is $10,000. Assuming half are convicted and all get the minimum fi ne, Ontario’s coff ers will swell by $1,000,000. Th at is a million in a month! (still don’t think it’s a cash grab?)

Q. Will you be able to get your out of pocket expenses reimbursed if found not guilty?

A. Fat chance! Th e only hope here will be to get a number of those people who were wrongly convicted together to sue the province.

Q. What will happen to your record when the magistrate throws the “Curbside Convic-tion” out of court?

A. No one knows. In theory your license has been suspended for seven days and when asked on your insurance policy you would have to answer that your license had been suspended. Once you tell them that, step back, that huge rushing sound will be the additional money they will be draining from your account to continue to insure you.

We won’t even get into a discussion of the ef-fect these unjust “Curbside Convictions” will have on your insurance rates.

What can you do? Well if you are one of the unfortunates caught up in this knee jerk political gesture against street racing, take your case to court. If everyone shows up in court, the offi cers forced to spend their time will think twice about the quality of their charges and magistrates will soon tire of the more frivolous ones. I repeat, TAKE EVERY CASE TO COURT.

Finally if you have been caught up in this draconian law and feel you were nothing more than a speeder, let us know the circumstances. We are interested in following your cases.

Well, in the fi rst month since Bill 203 has been in eff ect, media reports claim the police have impounded 1,057 vehicles. Leaving their owners stranded at the side of the road or,

if you were impounded from one of the 400 series highways, at a service center. Your drivers li-cense was suspended for 7 days, while your vehicle is towed to the nearest impound lot. You had no opportunity to defend yourself, you were guilty in the eye of the offi cer and off you went.

Th is brings up a number of questions:

To improve the ride of my slammed truck, I installed Bell Tech’s new Street Performance Shocks.

S-Dime Diary: If you plan on completing a project that takes apart your suspension, make sure you have all the proper tools and hardware on hand for when problems arise. I ran into a few snags myself.

Like most guys, I wanted my truck as low as possible, without a costly airbag system. When lowering the front end, it is a fine line between looking great, and being completely impractical. Scraping on every bump in

the road is not a good idea for a daily-driven truck.

My only other advice: Be sure to have someone else handy, there will be times you need more than two hands.

The front grille shell just pulls off. Then I removed the bumper and the front skirt. These clips holding the stock

grille shell should just pop off, If you’re careful!

Slight adjustments had to be made to reposition the new bumper.

New SS stainless inserts clip in front of the stock grille, no cutting required.

Once the bumper fits properly, I gotta take it right back off again to prep for paint.

Generation2 full bumper cover and valence combo is made of tough flexible urethane.

Friday the 13thStory by Phil Adams

Photography by: Danny Bailey

“Place of residence?” asked the Border crossing guard, as they have millions of times previously.

Th is purposely-ambiguous question always throws me off even though I know that its ambiguity is intended to unsettle those who might be trying to cross the border improperly. I used to answer “Canada”, thinking that the intent is to determine citizenship; and then the offi cer would ask “province and city?” Now, I just answer “Port Dover, Ontario.”

Friday the 13th

Page 12: Dec / Jan 2008 - Performance in Motion - Canada’s automotive performance magazine

12 December/January 2008 • P|M

As soon as I tell the border guard that I’m a resident of this small, population 5,500, southwestern Ontario town, the whole de-meanor of the conversation changes and the phrase “Friday the 13th” becomes the central theme. The guard’s next comment is that they were working during the last Friday the 13th and dealt with the influx of motorcycles cross-ing the border, or, the guard was not working that day and attended the event or saw the news coverage.

Friday the 13th in Port Dover is the largest one-day motorcycle event in Canada certainly, and possibly North America. This gathering of bikers from all walks of life has grown organi-cally, with no input from any form of government.

The roots of the event hark back to 1971 when George Simons gave his son a Rupp mini-bike; not realizing that he would be instilling a life-long passion in his son Chris. Chris Simons has since owned sev-eral dozen motorcycles. He knows bikes inside and out. Chris also had a well-known bike shop in Port Dover called “Bikers’ Delight.”

The Friday the 13th tradition started in 1981. That was the same year that a group of head-banging teenagers came together in Los

Angeles to form Metallica; despite a recent assassination attempt, the President of the United States remained Ronald Regan; Pierre Trudeau was Prime Minister of Canada and Bill Davis was the Premier of Ontario. The Rolling Stones were singing “Start Me Up” (the first time…not for Microsoft Corpora-tion) and “An American Werewolf in Lon-don” was playing in the theatres.

Against this backdrop, Chris Simons and about 25 friends, through word of mouth, got together at “The Zoo Bar” in the Commer-cial Hotel, now known as Angelo’s of Dover. It was Friday, November 13. They had such a great time that they decided they should do it

every Friday the 13th. And so the tradition was born.Every Friday the 13th thereafter, the number of people attending

the event has increased. Chris has a suitcase full of newspaper and magazine clippings regarding Friday the 13th, and he has become something of a local celebrity because of it. Everywhere he goes, people have heard of Friday the 13th.

Although the event started with “biker types,” and there is still a large contingent of bikers who attend, the scope has expanded to in-

Chris Simmons, The man who started it all.

P|M • December/January 2008 13

clude all types of two-wheeled and sometimes three-wheeled riders. There is a strong sport bike contin-gent, many metric cruisers, touring riders and even a few scooterists. One of the major trends recently has been the increase in women riding their own bikes, both cruisers and sport bikes. Everyone is welcomed.

During a Friday the 13th event, the Main Street and several other streets are closed to automobile traffic and the “No Parking – Motorcycles Ex-cepted” signs go up throughout the downtown. Bikes are parked along both sides of the streets and along the centre line creating an amazing motorcycle show.

The entrances to the town are closed to cars, and huge parking lots are set up on the perimeter of the town with shuttle busses to bring spectators in to participate. Several service groups set up beer tents

with live bands to keep the crowds entertained. Ven-dors sell everything from t-shirts to leather wear to complete motorcycles.

The event is now managed by PD13 Inc., a not-for-profit volunteer organization whose mandate is to operate the event in the best interests of the diverse group of stakeholders, including; residents, partici-pants, businesses, police, vendors, fire and emergency services. The funds raised by PD13 are used to benefit the community.

Charities supported include: Camp Trillium, Alzheimer’s Society, Port Dover Museum, Norfolk General Hospital and several others. Recently the Leos (the junior members of the Lions Club) were handed a cheque which completed their fundraising and allowed them to purchase playground equipment to be installed in a local park.

The most recent event, held on Friday, July 13, 2007 attracted a staggering 150,000 people, who enjoyed an incident-free beautiful day. A good time was had

by all. The next event is Friday, June 13, 2008; rain or shine! For more information visit: www.PD13.com; www.inportdover.com.

Glenn Reeves’ interest in cars was sparked by trips

to the legendary Harvey’s on Jane Street. Known at the time as “Home of the Hot Ones,” Harvey’s on Jane, was the place to see or be seen if you were a car nut in Toronto in the 1960’s.

Fast forward to five years ago. Glenn, after building and driving a 1927 T-coupe, wanted something different. He came upon a 1952 Mercury M1 1/2-ton pickup. Over the next five years, Glenn transformed it into the great truck you see here.

Glenn is quick to point out that his truck is all-steel, no bondo here. When these photos were taken, Glenn’s truck was just completed with only 200 trouble-free miles on it. Glenn considers this truck to be the best thing he has ever done with cars.

Attention to detail is excellent. Check out these photos.

Hand-made storage box provides a place to carry those essential cruising items. Bed fl oor features stained hardwood and chrome rub rails.

Body work is top drawer; everything is straight as an arrow. Even though the gas tank was changed, the new one still fi lls from the original location.

Under the hood rests a 350 cubic inch Chevrolet small-block engine with an Edelbrock aluminum performer intake and carburetor. Billet aluminum valve covers and a Cadillac-style air cleaner completes the look.

Book Reviews:

You probably thought that everything possible that could be written about modifying Chevrolet heads had already been written. Not so. Cylinder head technology has been constantly chang-ing so an up-to-date book will help you build a set of heads that encompass all the latest treatments.

In 144 pages, author Graham Hansen takes you through the latest thoughts on cylinder head technology. He explains the diff erences between street and race prepared heads and reviews virtually all the aft ermarket cylinder heads currently available, comparing three separate segments, small, medium and large port ver-sions.

Chapters review porting techniques, cylin-der head rebuilding and assembly, combustion chamber theory, and more. Th e two chapters explaining matching cams to cylinder heads and creating complete power packages are worth the price alone.

HIGH PERFORMANCE DIESEL BUILDERS GUIDE

For years, the diesel engine has been looked upon as a necessary evil. Th ey are noisy and loud, but were popular with truckers, particu-larly those who do a lot of towing. Th ey were kind of the Rodney Dangerfi eld of engines. Once, diesel fuel was dramatically cheaper than gasoline, but those days are gone.

Suddenly, people are using diesels for off -roading, drag racing and other types of performance applications. Finally, these engines are getting some respect. Th e massive amounts of low-end torque available make them great bases for high performance use. However, they respond to modifi cations in diff erent ways from gas engines.

Joe Pettitt’s new book “High Performance Diesel Builder’s Guide” explains the inner workings of these engines and tells you how to make them into torque monsters. With proper modifi cations these engines will provide serious horsepower.

No matter if you are just looking to improve your truck’s perfor-mance or if you are planning to go racing in a diesel class, this book will help you do it.

Sirius Satellite Radio is the must-have accessory for anyone planning a road trip. Think about it, you can have a great

time driving in a crappy car, but you can’t have a great roadtrip with crappy music.

Satellite radio is the greatest no matter if you’re driving non-stop, or just commuting to work. 110 channels of whatever you’re into. 65 commercial-free music channels available coast-to-coast. For the sports-minded, Sirius offers 11 channels worth of play-by-play cover-age. CFL, NASCAR, NBA and NFL are all available on Sirius. News, Talk, Comedy, Kids they have channels to appeal to anyone.

What’s the catch? Like everything good in this world, you have to pay for it. First, you choose a radio (anywhere from $29 to $299), then you choose a plan (from $14.99/month).

I admit to being reluctant to pay for radio at first. Then, I received a Sirius radio as a gift from my brother. Commercial-free music playing in any style 24-7 quickly turned me into a convert.

Now any time I’m forced to listen to ter-restrial radio, the commercials and repetitious music drive me nuts. At work, I can listen to Sirius online for free, so I don’t have to miss a minute of the Howard Stern show.

If only I could go back in time, to install a Sirius radio in my dad’s 1941 Mercury before our cross-country trips. Sure would have beat listening to the same old cassette tapes over and over!

REFUSE TOCOMPROMISE

In late May, the Toronto Aerospace Museum and Downsview Park held their second

annual Wings and Wheels Heritage Festival. Those who attended experienced the sights, sounds and smells of both vintage aircraft and vintage cars.

A number of the hangers were open displaying both planes and a number of works in progress. This is the location that holds the Aerospace Museum’s work shops.

The Festival celebrated the 60th anniversary of DHC-2 Beaver aircraft designed and built right there in Downsview by De Havilland Aircraft. The first flight of this pioneering plane flew from Downsview Airport on August 16, 1947. The beaver has been one of the most enduring commercial aircraft, with many of them still being flown today, a tribute to the Canadian craftsmen who designed and built it. During the time we were there, a couple of these aircraft flew in.

Another highlight was to see the full-size replica that the museum has built of the legendary super-sonic jet interceptor, the Avro Arrow. The plane that was to have put Canadian aircraft manufacturing on the map. Thanks, Dief!

In addition to the planes and cars, there were a couple of authors attending with books of interest to the flying enthusiast. Peter Zuuring willingly signed his Arrow Scrapbook and a number of other titles he had written, detailing the Arrow fiasco. What a shame that is, even today.

In another corner are the remnants of the Lancast-er Bomber that used to reside on a concrete pedestal at the Canadian National Exhibition. The years have not been kind, and the craftsmen at the museum have their hands full trying to restore it to its former glory. Standing nearby was Phillip Gray one of the last surviving Lancaster bomber crew captains. He was most interesting as he explained the limited space they all had to work in and the hardships that flying such a plane brought.

Outside on the tarmac, a group of vintage cars gathered, giving those in attendance more to see. If you are interested in visiting next year’s festival, be sure to bring your vintage car or hot rod, they give you a free space to display your vehicle and free attendance to the event. I plan to return. There was more to see than I had time for!

About the Author: Bonnie Staring is a comedian, advertising copywriter and one of those people who enters all kinds of contests. To see what else she’s been ranting about, visit her website: www.bonniestaring.com

Therecomes a time when an overwhelming need emerges. One that makes us sit a little taller and take a good look over the dashboard: it’s time that we all resolve to be better passengers in 2008.

My references to passengers are usually to awesome people (such as yours truly) who ride shotgun while in certain awe-inspiring vehicles. For the purpose of this issue, I’m using the term in a global sense, because we’re all passengers on this planet, speeding along the intergalactic highway.

Yeah, I’m getting down to the basics here people. Maybe I’ve gotten too darn close to an exhaust pipe again, but I think it’s about time we–the automo-tive enthusiasts and the loved ones who support them–did something to make the ride of life a more enjoyable one.

After all, current traffic laws that are aimed at the punks with far too much testosterone in their system are trying to sweep everyone with a cool ride into the same speed-addicted category. And that has a lot of us fuming.

So how do we differentiate ourselves? Easy. Start 2008 off as a passenger who “rides clean” with these resolutions:

• Upon seeing a fellow automo-tive enthusiast with a sweet ride, acknowledge the other driver with a small wave, smile, honk or a flash of headlights.

• If you come across a car nut in trouble, do your best–without compromising your safety–to assist the other motorist.

• When you find a mechanic, body shop, insurance carrier, sources for parts or other helpful rod guardians, reward their good service by referring them to others. And be sure to warn other car freaks to those businesses who fail to deliver as promised or are as reliable as bondo in a collision.

• Do not let a ride sit idle on

the back forty and slowly rust to death without trying to find a loving home for it first.

• Refrain from pointing out the flaws or making snide remarks about the condition of another vehicle even if you think yours is better–and you have the bumper-sticker to prove it.

• Keep

all racing activities where

they belong: on racetracks or SpeedTV.

• Check with other members of your household before installing trophy walls, car show photo collages or décor items that might look better on the hood or back end of a vehicle.

• Ask friends, family and colleagues for permission before e-mailing them hi-resolution 8” x 10” images of your ride. This is especially prudent if a hot babe not related to you is sitting in the passenger’s seat or leaning against a fender.

• Road rage is for sissies. No one wants to see anyone turn the same shade of red as the flames painted on the side of a beauti-fully restored GTO or Corvair. If you can’t deal, don’t get behind the wheel.

It’s about living with no regrets and as little rust as possible. Enjoy the ride.

Resolve to be better passengers in the new year!
