Recently, I had the opportunity to take a ride with a friend on one of our super highways. Our trip was in the

middle of the day, not in rush hour. He drove, which gave me the chance to rubberneck as we travelled along. We were on one of our eight lane expressways with a speed limit of 100 km an hour. We were traveling about 115 and were beginning to think we had parked the car. People were blowing by us and giving us dirty looks.

But that’s not all. I started to notice the number of drivers doing more than driving. Now I understand the premise of multi-task-ing, but it seems to me there is a time and place for everything.

Th e fi rst guy I noticed seemed to be paying a lot of attention to the seat next to him. When we got even with him, he was reading the newspaper neatly laid out on the passenger’s seat. Further up the road, we passed another driver holding a pocketbook in the center of his steering wheel with his thumbs. I guess it was an interesting story, since he seemed to be looking down more oft en than up.

Now, it was not just the men. We were following a woman combing her hair, if that’s not bad enough, she was leaning forward and towards the center of her car so she could see how well she was doing in her rear-view mirror.

Oh, I know we have all seen some version of this, but how about the next one. Th is lady seemed to be doing something with her eyes. First, her right hand could be seen at the side of her head, then aft er a time, the left hand appeared making a similar move. You won’t believe this one She was curling her eye lashes. Must have been a hot date.

But it gets better… along the way, we passed a guy with a cellphone in one hand and a coff ee in the other; he was steering with his knees! My all time favourite however, was the gentleman in the suit, driving a Mercedes holding a bowl of Chinese food in his left hand. How could I tell it was Chinese food? He was using chopsticks in his right hand to eat it with!

We saw all this in about 20 minutes, all at speeds in excess of 100 km. per hour. So I go back to my fi rst line. What are you people thinking? Th e other question is where are the police.

In American Graffi ti, John Milner had it right when he said “Driving is serious business.” Come on, people, get a grip.

The legendary Pierson Brothers 34 Ford Coupe is one of the milestone cars of the era. Running fi rst 140 then 150 mph at Bonneville, this coupe led the movement away from roadsters. After a long career as a race car under the tutelage of many owners, Bruce Meyer commissioned Pete Chapouris to restore the car to its 1950 specifi cations.

museum fulfills a dream

6 June/July 2007 • P|M

Known to everyone as “Pete,” Bob Petersen, starting from scratch, formed the company that became the largest special interest publishing company in America.

Pete began Hot Rod magazine as a means to promote the fi rst hot rod show held at the Los Angeles Armory in January 1948. He sold mimeographed copies of his magazine at local car events and speedways for 25 cents. In the early days, he did every-thing, took the photos, wrote the stories, sold the advertising, distributed the book, and swept the fl oor.

His contributions to the growth of the hot rod sport are legendary. His magazine promot-

ed Bonneville land speed racing, was there for the formation of the NHRA, (Wally Parks was a Hot Rod editor), and publicized all things hot rod. Over the years, Hot Rod Magazine provided people around the world with an insight into the growing automotive culture.

By the mid 90s, the publish-ing business had grown to 24 monthly titles and 47 annual publications, along the way making Pete a rich man. Even

with all his wealth, he never lost sight of his roots.

In 1994, he was able to see one of his lifelong dreams come true. His endowment of $30 million dollars made possible his dream of an educational museum that paid tribute to the growth of the automobile and featured the cars that he grew up with.

Today, the Petersen Automo-

tive Museum in Los Angeles stands as the nation’s pre-eminent automotive exhibition. Th ousands of visitors each year leave with a better understand-ing of the passion that the auto enthusiast feels for his or her vehicle. Its mission remains to educate and excite generations of auto enthusiasts with the

On March 23 this year, the hot rod fraternity lost one of its ground break-ing pioneers. Robert E. (Bob) Petersen succumbed to cancer.

Dean Jefferies’ Mantaray was built in 1963 to compete for the “Tournament of Fame” at the Oakland Roadster Show. The Mantaray featured a custom-built tube chassis, a curvaceous body built from 86 separate pieces of aluminum and a bubble top. Power came from a modifi ed small block Ford. After a couple of years on the show car circuit, Dean tucked it away in the corner of his shop. Many years later,, a quick repaint and some polishing was all it took to get it ready for The Petersen.

Howdy Ledbetter built this tribute to the Barris Built Ala Kart that had been damaged in a

fascinating stories, vehicles and people that have infl uenced the American love aff air with the automobile – a mission that has been a resounding success thanks to the generosity of its main benefactor Pete Petersen.

In an announcement of his death, Dick Messer, director of the Petersen Automotive Museum noted “He understood the thrill that the average person could get from seeing and reading about horsepower as an art form. He made his living doing things he loved, and he found success at every turn. Th e way he lived his life, always looking for ways to give back in return for the success he enjoyed, made you proud to count him as a friend. Th e museum is now his legacy.”

A wonderful legacy it is, here are just a few of the features you will see if you spend a day at “Th e Petersen.”

RRRRadillac

This Cadillac has enough modern features to ensure that, even though it looks old, it rides and handles like new.

Bernie Aaron is a very eclectic auto enthusiast. Over the years, he has been the owner/restorer/creator of a very diverse collection. His

garage has seen a number of restored vehicles, a Duesenberg, the 57 Ford Th underbird race replica that he created (detailed in the April 2005 Issue of Performance in Motion and now residing in a private museum in the heart of NASCAR country, Richmond, Virginia) and this unique custom.

Aft er owning numerous original vehicles, Bernie decided he needed to have something a little diff erent. He already owned a restored 1947 Cadillac, when the opportu-nity came to build a more modern version, he leapt at it.

Named the Radillac, this Cadillac has all the modern features to ensure that, when on the road, even though it looks old, it rides and handles like new.

Th e majority of the work on Radillac was handled by the legendary Duke Brown. To ensure modern handling, the Cadillac was lowered and a 1977 Camaro front clip added. Th is gave independent suspension plus disk brakes. Th e original rear end was replaced with a modern unit. Th e car was lowered all around. Th e car rests on American aluminum wheels mounted with 205 60-15 front and 225 70-15 rear. Power

comes from a 500 cubic inch Cadillac engine connected to its matching transmission rescued and rebuilt from a 1974 model.

By far, the most outstanding feature of the Radillac is the custom body work. First and foremost, the top was chopped 4”. Duke also pie-cut the rear deck lid to ensure that the body lines remain smooth. Duke is quick to note that he had a huge amount of advice

on the chop from Windsor’s Jim Bailey. Th e body was smoothed and shaved. Surplus trim pieces were removed, and the headlights frenched. Th e grille is from a 1941 Cadillac. Th e massive front and rear bumpers were removed. Out front a new split bumper was designed. Th e licence plate is recessed in the rear pan, and the rear end is protected by a pair of bumper guards. Custom taillights were

built and, in keeping with the custom look, rear fender skirts were also installed. Door handles were removed, and the door opera-tion converted to electric solenoids. Modern mirrors ensure that the driver can see what is going on behind him.

The interior also received the full treat-ment. A custom console was built to house the power window and other necessary switches. A modern steering column and steering box were installed. The dashboard was modified to accept a complete selection of custom gauges then covered with material that matches the rest of the interior. A modern stereo provides the tunes and the cab

is kept cool by the factory air conditioning. The bucket seats were rescued from a 1988

Cad and feature all the power adjustments of a new car. Bruce Willis replaced the original wiring with a complete 12-volt harness, once again bringing the Radillac up to today’s standards.

After six months in Duke’s shop, Radil-lac left to be painted and upholstered. Joey Morano applied the Montana Blue paint, while Raoul Bottonero completed the trim. Once the paint and trim were completed, Bernie finished off all the little details that a project of this magnitude requires. Small details separate good cars from great ones.

Check the custom-made Radillac script on the front fenders.

When asked what he liked best about it Bernie is quick to note that it drives better than the latest GM products. Today, the Radillac attends cruise nights and takes the Aarons out on great drives, one of their most memorable was a trip to Saratoga, Florida, for the National Cadillac meet. Needless to say, the Radillac turned some heads.

Radillac At the rear, the pan has been rolled, taillights hand-made, licence plate recessed in the body and fender skirts installed. All in keeping with the custom look.

Under the hood rests 500 cubic inches of Cadillac power, equipped with all the creature comforts you would expect in a new car.

As with all things, it is time to move on. Bernie has decided he needs garage space for another project so the Radillac has to go. If you have an interest in owning this unique custom car, you can e-mail him at [email protected].

Here is the Radillac, at its best, driving down the road. Late-model mirrors give the driver excellent rear views, yet don’t look out of place when combined with the smooth bodywork.

The dashboard was modified with a set of auxiliary gauges and a modern stereo was added. A custom console was built to house extra switches and controls. A late-model steering column was added with a custom steering wheel.

In 1999, Edge Products, based in Ogden, Utah,

began making modules and programmers that brought out all the performance hidden in today’s diesel engines. Edge manufactures modules and programmers for all major truck manufacturers – including Ford, Chevy and Dodge.

What sets Edge apart from its competitors, is their philosophy that all products should install in less than ten minutes. Once installed you should have maximum adjustability, enhanced with real-time data to monitor your vehicle’s performance as you drive.

Th ere are a number of diff erent models available, depending on just what your driving style needs. By far, their most popular unit is the “Juice.” Simply hooking up an Edge “Juice”

module allows changes to be made to ignition timing and the duration of injector fi ring. Th e Edge can give your diesel the extra edge over your competition on the highway, in the streets and at the pump. More horsepower, more torque and improved mileage have been the driving force over at Edge since the beginning.

Combining an Edge performance module with one of their high-tech monitors, will give very real power gains that you can see and feel, plus improved fuel mileage that you will notice in your wallet.

Th e Edge “Juice/Attitude” combination is a highly sophisticated package capable of dramatically improving your vehicle’s drive-ability and responsiveness. Towing, fuel mileage and, most importantly, POWER are all enhanced. Using factory-style connections,

in just ten minutes, you can add fi ve levels of adjustable power, ranging from 25 to 100 horsepower and increase torque up to 250 ft . lbs.

When used in conjunction with the Attitude monitor, you can control the fi ve power levels, on-the-fl y, from inside your truck. Th e Attitude displays all the information a complete set of gauges would and will automatically monitor and display exhaust gas temperature (EGT), turbo boost, transmission slip and de-fuel the engine to prevent excessive EGT, boost levels or transmission slippage. It also displays 0 - 60 times, quarter-mile times and actual speed, if you are using non-stock tires, as well as a host of other parameters.

Th e Juice communicates directly with the engine’s ECM, from which it receives vital

If you are driving a diesel truck, there’s a new sheri in town. Today’s diesel-powered trucks respond well to modi cations. However, those modi cations are not as tough as they used to be. Th e EDGE Juice module and har-ness cables. Two PCM connectors closest to the cab of the truck are replaced with EDGE ones. Th e stock connectors are then attached to the EDGE harness. Below is the JUICE tucked beside the battery.

Th e Attitude allows you to monitor the performance of your engine, especially Exhaust Gas Temperatures. Simply drill your exhaust manifold, tap, and install the supplied EGT probe. Place the monitor on your dash, connect to your JUICE module and you’re done!

engine and fuel system information. Th is enables the Juice to provide smooth and precise power in real time under any driving condition. Imagine, within minutes, you get incredible power gains, an increase in mileage and the equivalent of a complete set of gauges with one simple ten-minute installation!

Th e following power gains are representative of an actual Ford test vehicle. Th ese gains were measured on a SuperFlow Dyno at an altitude of 4,400 ft . above sea level, and represent power delivered to the rear wheels of the test truck. Th e only modifi cation made to the test truck was the addition of the Edge “Juice w/Attitude” module. Power gains may vary, based on vehicle type and geographical location. Fuel mileage increases vary by driving style.

Five “On-the-Fly” adjustments right from the driver’s seat:

• Level 0: Stock

• Level 1: 25 Horsepower 80 Foot Pounds of Torque

• Level 2: 40 Horsepower 120 Foot Pounds of Torque

• Level 3: 60 Horsepower 150 Foot Pounds of Torque

• Level 4: 80 Horsepower 200 Foot Pounds of Torque

• Level 5: 100 Horsepower 250 Foot Pounds of Torque

Edge makes sure that your truck not only gets thundering horse-power, grunting torque and dramatic fuel economy gains, but that your ride quality is never sacrifi ced. Smooth fuel curves and shift points are a part of every Edge product.

“Attitude” monitors the perfor-mance of vital engine components. The following parameters can be displayed on the main screen (maximum four at one time):

• Backdown %• EGT (exhaust gas temp)• Engine load % • RPM• Speed MPH• Boost

• Engine temperature• Barometric temperature• Throttle position• Transmission lock• Transmission slip• Intake temperature

The “Attitude” can also sound an alert when certain engine parameter levels are met.

• Engine temperature• EGT• Boost• Speed

Keep track of your perfor-mance by recording maximum/minimum for a variety of param-eters including:

• Max engine temperature • 0-60 times• ¼ mile times• Max RPM• Max speed• Transmission slip• Backdown %

Also available is the Edge A2, featuring all-of-the-above plus GPS, and an optional back up camera. The A2 automatically

defuels to prevent excessive EGTs, turbo boost and tranny slip and provides cold engine protection.

In only 30 minutes an Edge module gives your truck adjust-able horsepower, grunting torque and fuel economy gains. Mileage tests by Edge engineers resulted in an increase of fuel economy of 5.1%.

EGTs stay tame, boost pressure is optimized and timing is always in step, when you give your truck an Edge.

different by design

There were a number of special segments to the 2007 edition of the Canadian International Autoshow.

One that caught our eye was the “Different by Design” showcase of Studebaker cars through the years.

The history of Studebaker Corporation was combined with a number of milestone Stude-baker vehicles to create an interesting look at the progress and decline of the company.

Henry and Clement Studebaker opened a blacksmith shop in 1852; by 1858, they had migrated first to building wagons then on to carriages. In fact, on April 14, 1865, it was a Studebaker carriage that took President Abraham Lincoln to Ford’s Theatre where he was assassinated.

By 1902, they were building electric cars and by 1904, gas-powered cars were added to their offerings. Over the years, Studebaker built many milestone vehicles. Most notable were the 1931 President Roadster, the 1950 Bulletnose and the 1953 Champion Starliner coupes.

Financial woes forced the company to close its US operations in December 1963, finally closing the last plant in Hamilton, Ontario, in March of 1966.

Here are a few of those magnificent Stude-baker vehicles to remind you of a most inter-esting time in automobile history.

During the pony-car era, late 60s early 70s Studebaker fielded a number of high-powered competitive models under the AMX and Javelin banners. Small cars powered with big engines. Very competitive at the drag strips and on road courses.

1911 Studebaker Electric Coupe: one of only 1841 electric cars built from 1902-12 when production was stopped.

1953 Studebaker Starliner 2-door coupe: designed by legendary stylist Raymond Loewy. This slippery body style is still popular with land speed racers.

1963 Studebaker Avanti: powered by a supercharged 289 cu. in. V8. This was a ground breaking Loewy design.

1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk: by now, they were teamed with Packard and this car was powered with a 352 cu. in. 275 hp Packard V8.

1950 Studebaker Land Cruiser: this body style became known as the bullet-nosed Studebaker. Power was from a 245 cu. in. flathead six-cylinder engine.

A 1904 Studebaker Model C that sold for $1,600. This is thought to be the oldest surviving gas-powered Studebaker.

In 1935, you could purchase this classic Studebaker Commander Roadster for $895.

1947 Studebaker M5 ½-ton pickup: very popular model for the farm. They were also a force in the truck business, having built a lot of trucks for the war effort.

Story by Dan Limpala • Photography by: Peter Parker

In 1955, General Motors began the fi rst of three Chevrolet years that even today make a car enthusiast’s heart beat faster.

Known as tri-fi ve Chevrolets, they encom-passed the 1955, 1956 and 1957 models.

Th e 1955 Chev featured a number of fi rsts. Body styling was a clear departure from previ-ous Chevrolets. Th e body sat lower, and was very crisp and clean. Th is was the fi rst year for the wrap-around windshield, and the egg crate Ferrari-style grille. Th e electrical system was 12 volts and the top-of-the-line Bel Air model featured additional chrome trim and upgraded interior pieces.

Most important of all, 1955 was the intro-duction of the remarkable small-block V8 engine. Destined to become the most popular engine of all time, over 90,000,000 of this basic design have been built. It was not until 2004 that GM stopped putting this engine in some of their models. Th eir fi rst year engine was 265 cu.in., in size and developed 110 horsepower.

All of this information was swimming in Rony Farronato’s head when he went to look at what was to become his 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Coupe. He just knew he wanted to own one of these milestone cars. Th e car that was

to eventually land in his garage was originally from California and had served some time as a drag racer.

Once home, Rony gave his car a complete evaluation, deciding what needed to be done to create the car he wanted. Th e body was inspected, and Rony was pleased to fi nd it needed very little bodywork; best of all, the rear wheel wells had a slight tub to allow the use of a fairly large tire at the rear. Th e car went to Tom Lovejoy in Bolton for body and paint. Tom cleaned up all the problems and applied a white and yellow base clear paint job.

1955 Chevy

Th e factory black and white interior looks great. Original dashboard with auxiliary gauges, aft ermarket steering wheel, and a rare chrome Kleenex dispenser. Notice how the fr ont seat had to be modifi ed to accommodate the Hurst shift er.

Page 27: June July 2007 - Performance in Motion - Canada’s automotive performance magazine

P|M • June/July 2007 27

Th is angles demonstrates just how great Rony’s 55 sits. Notice all the rare OE chrome accessories.

Th e original chassis features ladder bars, coil over rear springs and a GM 12-bolt rear end. Th e front suspension has been converted to disk brakes and the whole chassis has been lowered two inches. All four corners feature old style Centerline wheels with 235x60/15 front and 295x50/15 rear BF Goodrich T/A’s.

Th e interior is pretty much the way the General made it; the car was rewired with a kit from Painless, the steering wheel changed and a modern Pioneer am/fm/cassette stereo installed. Additional gauges were added to monitor all the engine functions.

Power is from a 327 cu. in. engine taken from a 1967 model. Headers have been added, and the power plant is attached to a Muncie four-speed transmission. Power brakes were added to make it stop as well as it goes.

Today Rony uses his 55 to take the family on road trips, to attend cruise events and just to have fun. When asked what he liked best he noted “the old-time muscle car look.”

Th is 55 is a great example of one of the most exciting cars that General Motors has ever produced.

Ferrari style grille makes the 55 unique. Painting the bumpers body colour increases the appearance of lowness.

Here’s Rony ready to take his car through the gate for another great ride.

Stiffer law won’t halt street racesBy Ian Law

Ontario Minister of Transportation Donna Cansfi eld has announced stiff er

fi nes and penalties for street racing and drunk driving.

Public pressure over many years has fi nally yielded legislation that gives law makers more clout when passing sentences on these inconsiderate motorists who put others at risk of injury or death.

Now the $64-billion question is, will this make a signifi cant improvement in our road safety?

Let’s look at street racing, I fear this new legislation will not have as

big an impact as we are hoping for. Stiff penalties rarely act as a deterrent.

If they did, then Texas, which has capital punishment would have fewer murders, instead of more murders than all of Canada

Unfortunately, when most people are committing a crime, the last thing they are thinking of is getting caught and the sting of the penalty they will receive.

Th ere are two types of street racing: • Th ere are semi-organized runs, where

a group of street racers meet up at a prear-ranged location and set up drag races for fun or money.

Th ey usually race until the police show up or they disband when they have completed their races. Hopefully, no one gets hurt or killed during the process.

• Th e second form of street racing is the impromptu variety, where two would-be racers happen across each other at a set of traffi c lights or on the open highway and decide to try to show off .

Both kinds of street racing are dangerous,

inconsiderate and stupid. Th e new stiff er penalties will have very little aff ect on these two types of racers. Most are younger drivers and believe they are still immortal. Th ey are driving in what we refer to as the “Child State of Mind” and getting caught is not part of their plans, making any penalties irrelevant. What would make a diff erence to the semi-organized street racing scene, is if these racers had an easily accessible venue where they could meet and run off against each other.

Downsview Park comes to mind with its long unused runways far from the public and its central location. Give them a place to race and we can remove a lot of the danger to the public. Providing these racers with a place where they can practise their passion without fear of penalty, may entice many of them off the streets.

As for the impromptu racer, one way we can deter this is to better educate these young drivers about the consequences of street racing.

When the adrenalin fl ows, the brain shuts down. Unfortunately, there will always be a street racer somewhere, but if we can reduce their numbers through education, we have accomplished something.

Making heroes out of street racers as some recent fi lms have done does not help the situa-tion. Street racers are zeros, not heroes.

Th ere are also two types of drunk drivers. Alcohol impairs judgment, and this is

the fi rst of the senses to be aff ected. Aft er a few drinks, many people erroneously judge that they are not impaired, and one more drink will be no problem. Many drivers are surprised they “blow over” when they thought they were okay to drive. Stiff er penalties may have little eff ect on these drivers.

Proposed Legislation Toughens Penalties For Drunk Driving And Street Racing

By Ontario Minister of Transportation Donna Cansfi eld

Since 1999, there have been 35 street-racing related deaths in Ontario, with

innocent bystanders oft en the victims of these senseless acts. And, it is sobering to know that each year, about 16,000 people are convicted of drinking and driving in Ontario — that is about two people each hour.

Th at is why the McGuinty govern-ment is taking action to protect Ontario families by proposing legislation that makes it clear — if you drink and drive or if you street race, you will pay and the penalty will be tough.

Our proposed legislation is also intend-ed to encourage people to separate the behaviours of drinking or racing from the action of driving. Combining these activities is dangerous, reckless and can too oft en result in deadly consequences. We want all drivers to think twice before they cross, what I call, the “stupid line.”

If passed, this legislation would increase roadside driver’s licence suspen-sions for drunk drivers, allow the courts to take vehicles away from repeat drink-ing and driving off enders and establish an early ignition interlock program for Criminal Code off enders.

It would also take driver’s licences away from street racers and give police the authority to impound their vehicles, as well as increase fi nes.

Th e proposed legislation would protect police in the line of duty by allowing for a combination of red and blue lights on their vehicles, making them more visible, especially at night.

Th e McGuinty government has listened to the concerns of the public and is deliv-ering on its commitment to tackle road safety issues.

Keeping Ontarians safe on our roads is a team eff ort. We will continue to work with our partners at all levels of govern-ment, community groups, and police to ensure safety is paramount.

With this proposed legislation, we are building on our successful record as a leading jurisdiction in road safety. It will go even further in protecting our commu-nities and keeping our families safe.

Th e chronic alcoholic is going to drink and drive regardless. Th is driver will drink until impaired and drive because he or she doesn’t care or because of a belief they will probably not get caught.

Th e main infl uence these new harsher penalties will have on our driving society is to take those caught off our roads for longer periods. Impounding the vehicles of the street racer and drunk driver will have that aff ect.

Unfortunately, this legislation also has a disturbing side. Allowing the police to impound cars and suspend licences for “suspected” street racing is a double-edged sword. Th is could lead to innocent drivers being punished for not committing any crime other than looking like they may be a street racer.

Our society is not about punishing people because they might be committing a crime. Th is is just constitutionally and morally wrong.

As an intelligent society, we should be educating our younger drivers with better skills and information.

If someone wants to drive competitively, there are places and times to do it. Competi-tive driving can actually make drivers safer by improving and honing their skills, vision and refl exes.

All would-be street racers should check out www.casc.on.ca to join the many local car clubs that organize legal and safe driving skill competitions such as Solosprint or Autosla-lom and get it off the streets.

We have been promoting Tonneau Covers as a means of improving fuel mileage on pickup trucks for a number of years. Recently, SEMA (Specialty Equipment Marketing Associa-tion) conducted independent tests in a wind tunnel to prove or disprove this theory.

The results were published in the 12-page report, “How Tonneau Covers Affect The Coefficient of Drag.” Tests were conducted by SEMA researcher Megan McKernan and Dr. Richard Mark French, a professor of mechanical engineering at Perdue University. Below is a synopsis of their results.

SEMA Research: Tonneau Covers save gas?

In January 2007, SEMA’s Market Research Department

conducted a study to test the affect tonneau covers have on the coefficient of drag for pickups.

Four trucks were tested: a 2006 Ford F-150 with a 5’, 5” bed; a 2005 Ford F-150 with a 6’, 5” bed; a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 6’, 5” bed; and a 2007 GMC Sierra with a 6’, 5” bed.

These trucks were tested at the AeroDyne facility that services the NASCAR community in the A2 Wind Tunnel in Mooresville, North Carolina, with 13 different tonneaus from nine different manufacturers.

The wind tunnel test produced great results. All 13 products tested improved the coefficient of drag, Cd, by at least 4.2%. The improve-ments ranged anywhere from 4.2%–7.8%.

Other tests would need to be conducted in order for fuel economy to be calculated, but it is safe to say that a reduction in drag would improve fuel efficiency for these pickups.

Six products were tested on the 2005 F-150. Cd was normal-ized to 1 for all pickup trucks. This was done in the interest of

both the truck manufacturers and the tonneau cover manufac-turers. This also makes it easier to report percentage decreases in Cd.

The following charts shows the results. You will notice the baseline Cd value for the truck is represented by the blue dot at 1.(Baseline values were calculated for the trucks at a wind speed of 85 mph, with no tonneau installed, tailgate in upright position) You will also see the

values for the test with the tailgate

down.

As you will notice, lowering the tailgate has little effect on Cd (except negative).

With the high cost of fuel today it makes good sense to run a tonneau on your pickup whenever you do not have a load in the bed. The fuel savings eventually pay for it, plus you keep your cargo away from prying eyes and potential theft. Add a tailgate lock assembly for added safety.

Of course, you know all about this already, as your automotive enthusiast owns at least one vehicle that will never see a salt truck or hail storm as long as he has anything to do with it.

But dealing with one car nut is hard enough. Now that outdoor car shows, drive and shine days, and other groovy gatherings are filling up the family calendar, it’s time to review some tips so that you’re not approached by other car nuts and:

• Trapped in a never-ending conversation about camshafts;

• Covered with motor oil, even if by mistake;

• Identified as someone who knows anything about winter storage, bodywork or valve cap covers;

• Hit up for car-club memberships; and • Asked to purchase endless amounts of

50/50 draw tickets. It’s called car-nut spotting. This activity will

help you maintain your sanity and free up your time for important things like reality-TV show auditions, manicures and hanging out with normal people during the warmer months. Here are the main guidelines:

Keep it on the down low. Never remain inside the parked vehicle. This will attract car nuts and encourage them to ask you questions that you clearly don’t have the knowledge or patience to answer.

Check the accessories. Do a quick scan of shirts, hats and belt buckles for “I ❤ Daytona” pins, Muffler of the Month Club insignias or the ever-popular flames that normally appear on the ride. If you find more than one, cross the street.

It’s all in the eyes. Are they looking at you or the vehicle? Car nuts can’t help themselves. It’s almost like Jack Bauer and terrorists—wherev-er they are, the federal agent always shows up.

When you’re trying to avoid individual or groups of excitable, beaver-tail eating, carnauba-wax covered people, knowing how to spot them isn’t enough. You need an exit strategy—or tranquilizer darts. Here are three suggestions:

Create a diversion. A subtle “hey, will you look at that rare beauty,” while pointing to

distant area should give you a few seconds to make your escape.

Take up jogging. Start right then and there. Fitness fanatics never have to explain themselves because they’re doing it for their health. Note that this tactic may not work if you’re wearing heels and carrying a party pizza.

Scream loudly. This will cause others to approach. Ask the crowd if anyone loves hot rods and introduce the ones who respond “yes” to the car nut. Then head to the mall or spa.

Using these tips and tactics will ensure that the cruising season is as painless and car-nut free as possible. Of course, there’s not much we can do about the one you’re living with. At least, not today.

Enjoy the ride.
