What’s the difference? Levels: The New Zealand Curriculum includes 4 levels of mathematical content which primary and intermediate school students are taught. It looks at Number and Algebra, Geometry, Measurement and Statistics. When assessed against the New Zealand Curriculum, the students are given a curriculum level they are working at (number) and where in the level they are working (letter). For example, they may be working at 2p in Geometry. The letters stand for b (beginning), p (proficient), a (achieved). The numbers relate to the curriculum level. The following are the expected curriculum levels for each year group, which are to be achieved by the end of the year. Year 1 – Level 1b – 1p Year 2 – Level 1p – 1a Year 3 – Level 2b – 2p Year 4 – Level 2p – 2a Year 5 – Level 3b – 3p Year 6 – Level 3p – 3a Stages: Number and Algebra assesses their abilities in three domains; Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, and Proportions and Ratios. Students are then rated at a Numeracy Stage depending on their responses to the questions they are asked or need to solve. The following Stages are the expected levels for each year group, which is to be achieved by the end of the year in number and Algebra. Year 1 – Stage 2 – 3 Year 2 – Stage 4 Year 3 – Early Stage 5 Year 4 – Stage 5 Year 5 – Early Stage 6 Year 6 – Stage 6 What’s the purpose of maths homework? Doing homework should be a positive experience for a child. The purpose of time spent ‘doing maths’ at home, is for a child to share their learning with family and whānau, to practise maths skills that they have been introduced to at school, and to revise knowledge, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. Often homework can involve practising maths while playing card, dice, or board games, using their learning to solve a practical problem or puzzle, and talking about ways to get to a solution. Doing maths homework should result in a child growing in maths confidence and competence. Is there somewhere I can find out the maths content my child should be learning? Yes there is. In the ‘Supporting school maths section’ on www.nzmaths.co.nz , you’ll find Maths tips by year level. Click (show links to files) and choose the year level appropriate for your child. Most of all be positive when talking to your child about their mathematics learning as this will go a long way in helping them succeed in this curriculum area. If you have any questions regarding the mathematics curriculum or your child’s progress, please talk to our teachers who will happily share this information with you.
