Dear Parents and Students

In Mr. Moody’s absence at a Child Protection Conference, I have been asked to prepare a few remarks for this week’s BLAZE. I am delighted to remind all parents and students that we will have a long-weekend next week… with Friday Nov 16 being a no-school day. Last week Mr. Moody shared recommendations for a small number of minor edits to the school’s Guiding Statements (Philosophy, etc.) as suggested by a representative committee of parents, students, and staff parents. A reminder to parents to please feel free to email Mr. Moody (steve_moody@istianjinnet) should you have any questions or suggestions related to the proposed updates. Continuing with Mr. Moody’s series highlighting our Community Safeguarding Framework this week we are sharing Domain G: Behavior Management. Domain G. Behavior Management

Our code of student behavior rests on the principles of: respect for themselves; respect for others; respect for their own and others’ property. All detailed school regulations, bus rules, etc. will be logical extensions of these three basic expectations and will be explained to students in those terms. I would also like to call your attention to an important event is just around the corner and that is our Secondary musical production of The Three Musketeers. More than 100 students and about a dozen teachers have been working extremely hard to organize the musical so we hope to see a crowded theater on both nights of the performance– Thursday and Friday, November 22-23. Tickets are on sale at the front desk for 50RMB but students who have a black bookmark with a ticket voucher can relieve a 5RMB discount when they purchase their ticket. Please do consider coming to the show and sharing in the fun and excitement of these students as they demonstrate their willingness to take a risk and perform publicly on the lighted stage. Mission and Objectives

1. Our Policies are intended to protect student rights and responsibilities while rewarding success and positive social behavior.

2. Our Students represent their homes, the school and their cultural community through courteous and exemplary conduct both in school and in public.

3. Our Policies and practices are age appropriate, considerate of student and community welfare and impartially applied.

4. Our Teachers and students work together to foster a community of respect and inclusivity.

5. Our School implements policies and practices that ensure student wellbeing and ensure the consistent implementation of behavior expectations among all community members.

As a long-time expatriate, one of the great benefits of living overseas is the opportunity to learn and experience things from a different perspective or culture. I have enjoyed more than 20 years of Chinese holidays and festivals and am always delighted to celebrate cultural events along with the people of Tianjin. Of course, as an American citizen, I cannot help but also feel a sense of loss at missing some of the wonderful holidays that are common in my home culture. Americans traditionally celebrate their Thanksgiving Day on the fourth Thursday in November and this wonderful festival provides us with an opportunity to reflect upon our good fortune and to hopefully consider the many things for which we are truly grateful. Obviously, most of the IST community is not American however, as an American, I cannot help but feel extremely fortunate to be part of such a caring and considerate community of colleagues, parents and students. Despite the many issues that we face in our school, and despite the unforeseen troubles and circumstances that sometimes befall members of our community, I am continually reminded of the warmth and generosity of the IST family. Over the past weeks we have had a number of unexpected absences and issues that have arisen and yet, throughout each of these situations and circumstances, our community has been outgoing, supportive and has faced these issues with genuine compassion and good-will. And of course, I would be remiss if I did not call attention to the efforts of our PFO to provide IST teachers with welcome signs of appreciation such as shared meals and providing some much-appreciated kindnesses to our teachers. So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I hope that we can all find an opportunity to reflect upon our good fortunes and to share a measure of gratitude with our wider community. Warm regards,Michael ConwaySecondary Principal

THE THREE MUSKETEERS: Hear ye, hear ye! His Royal Majesty King Louis XIII doth command ye to a right rollicking, royal romp. This swashbuckling hilarious musical is based on Dumas’ classic tale of intrigue and adventure but you’ve never seen Porthos, Athos, Aramis and D’Artagnan quite like this. Black Adder meets Monty Python! This show is high on energy and colour and highly stylised – a Baroque’n’Roll spectacular. You will be entertained by the cooler than cool troupe of Hip-hop, jive talking Cardinals guards, serenaded by the nuns choir, dazzled by the sword-fighting of Lady De Winter, (a baddie if ever there was one) not to mention the evil Captain Mazarin! Combine all this with some very familiar music and this will be a Royal Command Performance like none other.

Tickets are on sale at the front desk~

Tuesday brought about the last event for our Cross Country CCA and the runners lined up enthusiastically for a mini marathon around The Meijian Lake area. The run was a distance of 5 kilometers, the longest distance we have attempted in the 10 week CCA (although some runners have run further before). With a fantastic atmosphere, music, another running event happening, lots of cheerleaders, parent help and even a finishing tape provided, our runners smashed it! The fastest time recorded was 16 minutes and 28 seconds, and no that’s not a typo! Well done Hugh Lobsey. Oliver was right behind with another great time of 18.33. All runners were in under 25 minutes so there were no sloths in our team. Well done everyone and thanks again to our CAS helpers and parents who came along. I am so proud of all the runners, 13 in total, and can’t wait to see more improvements on your PB’s next year. Bring on the next season! (Coach Sandy Herwini)

WHAT DO WE OFFER?

MS/HS food offer

A retail concept oriented environment as MS/HS students

are young adults who need choices, brands/concepts and

freedom in deciding the composition of their lunch.

We propose a different service concept that blends and

merges the “A la Carte “and “Set Menu” offers

into one single frame.

Students will have several stations to choose from, each

station serving daily dishes bound into a concept

(e.g. Grill, Wok, Western, and Asian, etc.). As such,

each customer can chose between paying the basic fare

for the main dish (A la Carte) or upgrading the chosen

main dish into a Set Menu or a Deal price lower than the

sum of the different components. The upgrade allows a

drink + dessert or Fruit + salad or Soup in a separate plate.

Examples:

Chicken curry + Rice

22 RMB

Upgrade 10RMB

(Drink + salad or soup + Fruit

or Dessert)

Set Menu Deal 32 RMB
