The Novus Ordo, or the ordinary form of the Roman rite, is celebrated in two major parts: the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. These parts complement each other in a balance of word and sacrament. In his 2004 apostolic leer Mane Nobiscum Domine, St. John Paul II described the complemental elements. Using the story of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus on the night of Easter Sunday, St. John Paul likens the two parts of the revised liturgy to their journey. First, Christ breaks open the word for them, preparing their hearts with man interpretaon of the Scriptures. Then they recognize Christ as they break bread. The Liturgy of the Word, proclaimed and preached well, allows me for silence and reflecon on the wisdom offered. It becomes the necessary overture for the celebraon of thanks and praise and the giſt of the sign and sacrament to follow. Parishes are called to take the Liturgy of the Word most seriously and to bring it to a new level of proclamaon. Saint John Paul admonished all involved, but especially preachers, to cherish the word and preach it so the depths of the mysteries celebrated may be recognized and received into the burning hearts of Chrisans. In this context, the Scripture readings are given a prominence they didn’t have in the older Roman rite. From The Eucharist: 50 Quesons from the Pews, © 2009 Liguori Publicaons Pastor Rev. There is a part of us which is attracted to good, and part of us which is attracted to evil. William Shakespeare presents this conflict beautifully in his play Hamlet. On a dark winter night, a ghost walked the ramparts of Elsinore Castle in Denmark. Discovered first by a pair of watchmen, then by the scholar Horatio, the ghost resembled the recently deceased King Hamlet, whose brother Claudius had inherited the throne and married the king’s widow, Queen Gertrude. When Horatio and the watchmen brought Prince Hamlet, the son of Gertrude and the dead king, to see the ghost, it spoke to him, declaring ominously that it was indeed his father’s spirit, and that he was murdered by none other than Claudius. Ordering Hamlet to seek revenge on the man who had usurped his throne and married his wife, the ghost disappeared with the dawn. Prince Hamlet devoted himself to avenging his father’s death, but, because he was contemplative and thoughtful by nature, he delayed, entering into a deep melancholy and even apparent madness. He thought of taking his life: “To be, or not to be: that is the question.” Hamlet was unable to make a decision. One part of him wanted to end everything in death. But the other part told him that it was against the commandment of God. — We all experience this inner tension. So long as there is this inner tension, this inner conflict, life must be insecure. In such circumstances the only way to safety, is to eradicate the desire for the forbidden thing for ever. The standard Jesus demands from us is not only our deeds but also our thoughts should be pure. So, Jesus forbids forever the anger which broods, the anger which will not forget, the anger which refuses to be pacified, the anger which seeks revenge. Rather, he encourages forgiveness and mercy. That is the road to a happy and healthy life. In his love,

Dear Padre February 16, 2020

Are the readings at the beginning of Mass more, less, or equal to the celebration of the Eucharist?

The Novus Ordo, or the ordinary form of the Roman rite, is celebrated in two major parts: the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. These parts complement each other in a balance of word and sacrament. In his 2004 apostolic letter Mane Nobiscum Domine, St. John Paul II described the complemental elements. Using the story of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus on the night of Easter Sunday, St. John Paul likens the two parts of the revised liturgy to their journey. First, Christ breaks open the word for them, preparing their hearts with man interpretation of the Scriptures. Then they recognize Christ as they break bread. The Liturgy of the Word, proclaimed and preached well, allows time for silence and reflection on the wisdom offered. It becomes the necessary overture for the celebration of thanks and praise and the gift of the sign and sacrament to follow. Parishes are called to take the Liturgy of the Word most seriously and to bring it to a new level of proclamation. Saint John Paul admonished all involved, but especially preachers, to cherish the word and preach it so the depths of the mysteries celebrated may be recognized and received into the burning hearts of Christians. In this context, the Scripture readings are given a prominence they didn’t have in the older Roman rite.

Isaiah speaks of the works of mercy as evidence that one is faithful. Jesus perfects

this prophecy in the Gospel. Note well, words and actions which glorify God mark the true disciple. It's all about Him, not us.

Why do we say that there are forty days of Lent? When you count all the

days from Ash Wednesday through

Holy Saturday, there are 46.

It might be more accurate to say that there is the "forty day fast within

Lent." Historically, Lent has varied from a week to three weeks to the present

configuration of 46 days. The forty day fast, however, has been more stable.

The Sundays of Lent are certainly part of the Time of Lent, but they are not prescribed days of fast and abstinence.

Let Go Enter In Never Give Up

Time Out

Prayer, Fasting, Alms-giving

Let Go A few years ago, I decided that I was not

going to rocket through Lent as I normally did; instead, I was going to slow down and prepare accordingly.

What I ended up doing, however, was creating a “to do” list of things that I

wanted to accomplish by Easter that was half a mile long! By Easter, everything on that list was accomplished, but I felt

depleted and knew that I had missed out on the significance of the Lenten

journey. I was so busy charting out my own path that I did not pay attention to

where God was leading me. Rather than being in control, let go of your own

expectations for Lent and let God do the rest. Lent is a journey, not a race.
