Number of

Flashback 4
Describing
turns (Position and Direction)
Magic 5 is below! Don’t forget to complete. Every day this half term, you are going to have a ‘number of the day’ task. It will require you to represent a set number in different ways. This is a fantastic tool to practice daily and is fantastic preparation for Year 2. Number of the Day is on a separate attachment! See an example below of how to complete it. If you’re fortunate to have a laminator at home, it would work really well to laminate one so you can reuse this again and again as this is a daily task. Today, just like the example, the number of the day is 10. Mr N loves teaching you maths, just because you’re all pretty incredible at it. Why don’t you teach mum or dad how to count to 100 using our special moves?
Curl into a ball and get bigger. Penguin Chicken Rock star Gorilla Ballerina Hula-hula dance Swimming Spiderman Drummer Shark Waving Floss Mr N’s favourite – shake your bum!
I’ve attached today’s Flashback 4. Try have a go at the answers. How many can you get out of 4? Parents – you’ll need to help out with this one as it is a new topic. We are going to be looking at different turns today, particularly a whole turn and half turn in our new topic of ‘Position and Direction’. Introduce these two words to the children. What do you think they mean? Can they show you a whole turn? What did they do? Discuss it with them. Can they now do a half turn? What did they do this time? How did it change?
Get a toy, i.e. doll, car, lego figure, (basically anything that you can show as having a face or front). Today, they are going to be looking at moving their toy in different positions. (Or they can do this themselves if they would like to!) Practice saying ‘whole turn’, ‘half turn’ at random. Can your child regularly repeat the action that this means? Once confident – have a look at the sheet below. How many can you solve? EXTENSION: Tomorrow we will be looking at quarter and three-quarter turns. If you would like, feel free to introduce this to your child as a head-start for next lesson.

Flashcards
Spelling alternates.
Sound card speed flash – practice all of your sounds using the cards below. Today you’re going to be looking at some spelling alternates. They all make the same sound, but can you identify which sound this is? Once you’ve solved this, use your knowledge to help you try to decode each of the words on the list. Can you sort them into the correct spaces on the grid? Write each one underneath the correct box title.
Dough Disco
Around now we would normally do some dough disco! Why don’t you teach mum or dad how to do it? Choose whichever funky song you like! These are some of our moves.

Contractions
Today in English, you’re going to be looking at contractions! Mr N LOVES contractions, mainly because it comes with this fantastic song which is such a great tune. You’ll sing it to yourself for AGES! First thing – do you know what a contraction is? (in grammatical terms)
A contracted word is where two standard words join together to make a new word, but when they join together, they also gain a special piece of punctuation called an apostrophe. For example: I am = I’m, did not = didn’t, cannot = can’t Have a listen to the contraction song here: How many words can you remember? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar58NnHb1rk In your resources at the back, you will see a match-up grid. On one side there are the original two singular words. On the other, there is the contracted form. Can you match the correct ones together? There is also this optional task below. See photos to help with the process.

See attached a separate PowerPoint that will help you to create your own lever and pivot picture at home! What different ones will you make? Warning – requires split pins.

Maths: Describe turns
Look at the shape in the shape box. Can you draw this shape after it has done a half turn and how it has done a whole turn? What do you notice?
Shape Half Turn Whole Turn
If you would like to, you can cut these shapes out and use them to draw around if it helps you. The main focus is the awareness of the whole turn and the half turn.
Phonics: Practice these sounds
j v w x y
z zz qu ch sh th ng ai ee igh
oa oo oo ar or ur ow oi ear air
ure er
ay oy ou ir ie
ue ea aw wh ph ew oe au ey a_e
e_e i_e o_e u_e
What is the secret sound?
Identify the secret sound – can you then work out what each word says?
Can you now sort them into their correct spaces on the grid below?
English: Correct the sentence
Can you find what is wrong with this sentence and write it out how it should look?
the weather haz been soe nighs this holiday
Correct version: _____________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________
Did you get it right? Here are the points that were wrong.
What is missing? What is wrong?
No capital letter. No full stop. Haz = has. Soe = so. Nighs = nice.
English: Find the contracted form
did not didn’t
will not shouldn’t
I am they’ll
he will won’t
I will can’t
they will I’m
she will he’ll
they are couldn’t
should not I’ll
could not they’re
can not she’ll
Write two different sentences using a contracted form word. For example, “I can’t wait to see Oak Class again.”
1. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Optional Contractions Task: Make your own flip book
Cut out the grid along the lines all the way around the outside. *You will notice the words seem to be on the wrong side, but this is purposeful.
Once you have cut it out, turn it over and fold along the lines where your words are making a leaflet. You should see that your words look normal now as we have folded them the opposite way. You also do not have capitals as I did as these words aren’t always written with capitals (apart from I)
Write your contracted words on the inside and you have created a flip-reminder book. Can you write them without using your match up sheet? Can you remember what the contracted form is?
will I
not can
have I
am I
is it
not do
not will
have should
