Dear Members of the Biocenter Initially discovered by CHRISTINE BANDTLOW, the Snow Eagle of Tyrolia, the Tiroler Adler (TA) was recently observed from the safe distance of the Biocente for the first time. This bird may or must still be there, somewhere in the woods south of Innsbruck! It demarkates the 2 seasons: being white means winter, being green is summer, very simple, indeed, explains ALEX HÜTTENHOFER, who got involved in the description and elucidation of this phenomenon while admiring a picture taken by LUDGER HENGST. SIEGI SCHWARZ, who could not escape ALEX, got finally infected by him and used Photoshop for making things a bit more obvious. A typical example of a vertical collaboration in our Biocenter!

The LIFE SCIENCE PhD SYMPOSIUM 2016 was a great success for all participating institutions and Doctoral programmes, i.e. the MCBO programme coordinated by Bernhard Flucher, the SPIN programme coordinated by Christoph Schwarzer and the HOROS Programme coordinated by Reinhard Würzner. Division of Experimental Pathophysiology & Immunology_Lukas A. Huber (interim) In March 2016, SIEGFRIED SCHWARZ from the above Division, held for his 11th time the Integrated Teaching Week in Thailand. This time at two universities: Suranaraee University of Technology (SUT) in Nakhon Ratchasima in the Northeast of Thailand and for the first time also at the Mae Fah Luang University in Chiang Rai, in the very North of Thailand, in the socalled Golden Triangle. At the Provincial hospitals of Surin and Buriram, affiliated with SUT, already quite a number of Innsbruck medical students could perform their Famulatur and all of them regard this cooperation as a great success for themselves as well as for our MUI.

Recently, the group of DIETMAR FUCHS from the above Division was mentioned at the MUI homepage as having been ranked by the journal LABORJOURNAL at position 8 among the most cited scientists in German-speaking countries in the field of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine. DIETMAR ist thus also the most cited Austrian researcher in this field. His group’s main interests are focussed on the metabolism of tryptophane and phenylalanine, two amino acids that are not only building blocks for proteins but also precursors for various neurotransmitters and other signaling molecules. As such they are involved in various organismic processes like immunological surveillance of tumors and exogenous agents as well as mood and other psychiatric disorders. King’s College, The Strand Campus, East Wing courtyard (foto gwf) Earlier this year (18 – 21 January), GABRIELE and her colleague Carmel Shalev from Israel (AIANI guest professor in Innsbruck in 2015) had organized an international workshop on perceiving a human rights- based ethic of care in inter-country medically assisted reproduction. This workshop took place at the prestigious Brocher Foundation in Hermance, Geneva, following a successful grant competition in 2015. A scholarly publication is in preparation. Following a preparatory seminar during the winter term, 7 medical students and one law student could first visit Jerusalem where they met with Dr. Osnat Levtzion-Korach, the director of Hadassah Mt. Scopus, and visited Yad Vashem, Mea Shearim and the historical town center. The group then retreated to the desert for some days. Various seminars by the participants on bioethical issues in medicine in Israel ranged from organ donation over reproductive medicine and genetics to end-of-life care and decisions, referring on the one hand to the high level of regulation of these issues in Israel as compared to other countries, as well as to various cultural and religious roots for certain practices and concepts. The experience was enriched by discussions with colleagues from Sweden, Germany, UK and of course Israel. Among other things, Ethucation, which is the Austrian unit of the International Network of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics (Haifa), aims to increase interdisciplinary and intercultural understanding, linking modern practices to historical experience and practices.
