and another one describing latest developments in diagnostics of various neurological diseases like Alzheimer or Parkinson, but also muscular diseases like those occuring in the heart in the Division of ALEXANDER HÜTTENHOFER. There, he explained how the measurement of non-coding RNAs and microRNAs can hopefully provide additional diagnostic tools for earlyier diagnosis of such diseases.

Alumni-I-Med On October 3 and 4, 2014, doctors who had studied medicine some 40 years ago at this university, joined a 2 days gathering invited by „Alumni i-med“ at MUI. Experiences were exchanged, discussions were made and latest developements of MUI were seen by the doctors. LUKAS A. HUBER (Division of Cell Biology) gave a lecture on „News from the field of theoretical medicine research“. After a lecture by Alexander Moschen from the Clinics of Internal Medicine on „News from the field of clinical research“, SIEGFRIED SCHWARZ (from the Division of Experimental Pathophysiology & Immunology) guided the visitors through our CCB and explained them finally in 5 minutes on one typical example the concept of „Molecules of Life & Mutations“, i.e. growth hormone and growth hormone receptor. Ilse-and Helmut Wachter-Award 2015 On December 4, 2014, the MUI homepage reported that Alexander Levitzki from the Hebrew University Jerusalem received the „Ilse-and Helmut Wachter-Award 2015“ for his enormous scientific work in cancer chemotherapy which is also regarded as a cornerstone in personalized cancer therapy. Photos by MUI On December 12, 2014, our MUI homepage reported that the Austrian Research Fonds (FWF) has decided to further support the SFB-F44 (Cell signaling in chronic CNS disorders) as well as the MCBO doctorate programme, both involving scientists also from the Biocenter. ALEXANDER HÜTTENHOFER participates in the former programme, ALEXANDRA LUSSER and KLAUS SCHEFFZEK are new members in the latter programme, besides STEPHAN GELEY, LUDGER HENGST, LUKAS A. After FWF renewed MCBO for a fourth funding period (2015-2017) at the end of 2014, we conducted on March 16, 2015 a recruitment hearing with 27 candidates from 15 different nations. The recruitment process was highly successful. All MCBO teams could fill their PhD positions; several could select external students as well. Most new MCBO students have already started their projects, the last will do so by the end of the summer.

On April 16, 2015 the MUI homepage reported that ZLATKO TRAJANOSKI was elected as coordinator of an EU project called APERIM „Advanced bioinformatics platform for PERsonalised cancer IMmunotherapy“, which is sofar the only project in Austria embedded in the new Horizon2020 call. On June 2, 2015 the MUI homepage reported on the successful publication in the Open Acess Journal eLIFE of important findings of DAVID TEIS from the above Division. These findings pertain to an important mechnism of cell life regulation, namely autophagy under circumstances of diminished food and energy supply. Division of Experimental Pathophysiology & Immunology_Lukas A. Huber (interim) In January and June 2015, SIEGFRIED SCHWARZ from the above Division gave his last FAREWELL LECTUREs to Medical students of the 7th and of the 6th semester, respectively, also his last Practicum in Clinical Diagnostics, in which the group of best students traditionally received a Knackwurst, and his last Venipuncture Demonstration and Practicum at the MUI. After September 30, SIEGI, now aged 65, has - after 40 years of continuous service for the MUI - to start his Beamtenruhestand (retirement). He thanks all members of the Division of Exper. Pathophysiology & Immunology, of the Biocenter as well as the entire MUI for having had the luck of being their colleague. I wish you all the best.

Division of Molecular Biology_Peter Loidl On August 28, 2015 LUKAS SCHAFFERER from the above Divisions, group of HUBERTUS HAAS, presented his PhD Doctoral Thesis Links between Iron Homeostasis, Ornithine Metabolism, Sulphur Regulation and Virulence in Filamentous Ascomycetes. He passed the Defensio with great success.
