[317] DEAN, STUDENTS WELFARE Dean : Professor P.K. Sehajpal The office of the dean student‟s welfare overlooks a broad range of activities associated with students, like campus student‟s cultural and sporting events, implementation of the mandate of NSS, allocation of Hostel facility and maintenance of discipline in hostels and campus. The office of Dean Student Welfare is present on the ground floor of Sahibjada Ajit Singh student Bhawan . Beside dean‟s office, it house a large reading room with wooden floor that also serves the purpose of a perfect dancing floor that is used for various cultural activities. On the right hand side of the building, there are four badminton courts, equipped with light, that are heavily used by students to fulfil their sporting interests. Special efforts are made by the Dean Student Welfare to incite cultural interest among students. Various cultural programmes are organised from time to time and students are provided with training in various cultural activities. In the month of February and early March, before the final examinations, an Inter-Departmental Cultural program JASHAN 2013 was held on the campus for four days and students show cased their talent enthusiastically by participating in large numbers. Beside this, students were selected, coached and sent for various activities in Zonal and Inter-Zonal cultural competitions where they performed and were rewarded with good positions. NSS unit in University is also under the jurisdiction of Dean Student Welfare. During 2012-13, a very successful blood donation camp was organised in which large number of university students and faculty members donated blood. A directory of blood donors is maintained so that in emergency situation help could be extended to the needy persons. Mementos and certificates were awarded to the deserving and active volunteers and student blood donors. The election of Student Body representatives in the university campus was also done on year to year basis. Additionally, other work(s) delegated by the higher authorities related with student welfare or university functions were also accomplished during the course of the academic year. DEAN, STUDENTS WELFARE

Dean : Professor P.K. Sehajpal

The office of the dean student‟s welfare overlooks a broad range of activities associated with students,

like campus student‟s cultural and sporting events, implementation of the mandate of NSS, allocation of Hostel

facility and maintenance of discipline in hostels and campus. The office of Dean Student Welfare is present on the

ground floor of Sahibjada Ajit Singh student Bhawan . Beside dean‟s office, it house a large reading room with

the department is to undertake the youth activities to provide the occasions to spot and promote the hidden talent,

potential, art & culture of the student artists.

University Functions

Functions on the occasion of university foundation day, annual convocation, republic day &

independence Day are organized at the university campus, Amritsar. During these functions cultural & other

programmes are arranged by the department.

Youth Leadership Training/Hiking Trekking Camps

Department organizes youth leadership training & hiking trekking camps during the summer vacations at

hill stations i.e. Khajjiar, Dalhousie and the students from different affiliated colleges and university campuses are

called to participate in the said camps. During the camps yoga asana are arranged in the every morning of the day.

Keeping in mind the physical fitness and to make each camper self confident, self dependant, trekking on hill

routes to different places i.e. Local Dalhousie Kala Top, Dian Kund, Panchkula, Khajjiar, etc. are arranged and in

the evening competitions of different items e.g. extempore, folk song, geet/gazal, poem recitation, debate, dances

etc. are held and in these competitions each student has to participate. In each camp best camper, IInd. best

camper & best disciplined team are declared to encourage the students for participation in the said camps and all

the winners are honored on the valedictory functions of the camps. High Officials/Professors of the university and

local Dalhousie are called for inaugural & valedictory functions of the camps. During the year 2012 the camps

were organized as per detail given below :

1. 7 - 13 May, 2012 : Youth Leadership Training Camp (Girls)

2. 17-23 May, 2012 : Youth Leadership Training Camp (Boys)

3. 28 May- 3 June, 2012 : Hiking Trekking Camp (Girls)

4. 7-13 June, 2012 : Hiking Trekking Camp (Boys)

5. 17-23 June, 2012 : Youth Leadership Training Camp (Girls)

Inter-University National Youth Leadership Camp

Inter-University National Youth Leadership camp sponsored by Association of Indian Universities was

organized at University Students Holiday Home, Dalhousie from 7-11 August, 2012. During the camp 71 students

participated who were from 12 different universities of the country. The camp was inaugurated by the worthy

Vice-chancellor of this university Prof. Ajaib Singh Brar and Mrs. Saravjit Kaur Brar was present on this occasion

as Guest of Honor. During the camp yoga asana were arranged in the every morning of the day. Keeping in mind

University Zonal & Inter-Zonal Youth Festivals

The department organized zonal youth festival of different zones during the year as per detail given

below:

(1) Govt. Colleges/Associate Institutes/Constituent Colleges‟ Zonal Youth Festival was organized at

university campus, Amritsar from 15-18 Sept., 2012. In this festival 20 colleges‟ teams participated in different

items of music, theatre, literary, dance & Fine arts. The festival was inaugurated by S. Bakhtawar Singh, SDM,

Tarn Taran and Senior Town Planner Sh. Shakti Bhatia was present as Guest of Honor. Valedictory function of

the festival was presided over by Madam Surbhi Verma, Chief Executive Member of Telecom Advisory

Committee and Sh. Vijay Sharma, Managing Director, Coca Cola was present on the occasion as Guest of Honor.

the festival was presided over by Dr.M.S. Hundal, Dean Coll. Development Council of the university and Dr.

Mahal Singh, Principal, Guru Nanak Dev University College, Verka was present on the occasion as Guest of

Honor. All the Chief Guest and Guest of Honor were honored with a memento by the Director Youth Welfare Dr.

different items of music, theatre, literary, dance & fine arts. The festival was inaugurated by first lady of the

university Mrs. Saravjit Kaur Brar and Dr.Amarjit Singh Sidhu, Prof. Incharge, Publication Bureau of the

University was present as Guest of Honor. Valedictory function of the festival was presided over by Dr. Sharanjit

Singh Dhillon, prof. Incharge Finance & Development of the university and S. Sukhnandan Singh, Deputy

Registrar (Account), S. Amarjit Singh Chugh, Assistant Registrar (Account) of the university were present on the

and folk singer Sh. Vinay Pal Buttar was present as Guest of Honor. Valedictory function of the festival was

presided over by Dr. R.K. Mahajan, Professor Incharge Examinations of the university and folk singer Manpreet

Sandhu was present on the occasion as Guest of Honor. All the Chief Guest and Guest of Honor were honored

with a memento by the Director Youth Welfare Dr. Jagjit Kaur. The winners of this festival were as under :

literary, dance & fine arts. The festival was inaugurated by Dr. Sukhdev Singh, Head Department of Physical

Education (Teaching) of the university and volleyball player Sh. Uneesh Yadav was present as Guest of Honor.

Valedictory function of the festival was presided over by Dr. Surinder Singh, Ex. Dean Academic Affairs of the

university, All the Chief Guest and Guest of Honor were honored with a memento by the Director Youth Welfare

Dr. Jagjit Kaur. The winners of this festival were as under :

Inter-Zonal Final Youth Festival was organized at university campus, Amritsar from 23-26 Oct., 2012. In

this festival first & second position holders in each item of all Zonal Youth Festivals were invited to participate in

the music, theatre, literary, dance & fine arts events. The festival was inaugurated by Dr. A.K. Thukral, Director

Research of the university and he was honored by Director Youth Welfare Dr. Jagjit Kaur. The valedictory

function of the festival was presided over by Prof Ajaib Singh Brar, the worthy Vice-chancellor of the university.

He was welcomed and honored with a memento by the Director Youth Welfare Dr. Jagjit Kaur. The overall

winners & winners of different 5 events of this festival were honored with the trophies by the Chief Guest of the

function. First position holders of each item were also honored with a memento by the Chief Guest. The result of

the festival was as under :

North Zone Inter-University Youth Festival

North Zone Inter-university youth Festival sponsored by Association of Indian Universities was

organized at university campus, Amritsar from 7-11 November, 2012. In this festival this university sent the

teams to participate in 22 items of music, theatre, literary, dance & fine arts. The university won OVERALL

CHAMPION Trophy by winning all the 22 items and also won the Music, Theatre, Fine Arts, Literary &

Dance Trophies. The valedictory function of the festival was presided over By Hon‟ble Minister of Education

Punjab S. Sikander Singh Malooka. University‟s Vice-Chancellor, Registrar and Director Youth Welfare received

the Overall Trophy and other Trophies from the Chief Guest of the function.

Inter-University National Youth Festival

Association of Indian universities organized Inter-University National Youth Festival from 5-9 Feb., 2013

at University of Kalyani, Kalyani. In this festival University‟s teams participated in 22 items of Music, Theatre,

Dance, literary & fine arts. University won 17 different items and won OVERALL RUNNERS UP Trophy and

also won Music Trophy. Overall Runners Up & Music Trophy was received by the Director Youth Welfare, Dr.

Jagjit Kaur from the Chief Guest of the valedictory function of the festival.

GURU AMAR DASS HOLIDAY HOME, DALHOUSIE

Director Youth Welfare : Dr. Jagjit Kaur

Guru Nanak Dev University have two Holiday Home buildings at Dalhousie one named as University

Students Holiday Home and other is named as University Teachers Holiday Home. Youth Welfare Department of

the university organizes Youth Leadership Training & Hiking Trekking Camps every at University Students

Holiday Home. Inter-University National & North Zone Youth Leadership Camps are also organized at Holiday

Home. The colleges affiliated to university and the University Campuses organizes the tour of the students to

Dalhousie and they have to stay at University Students Holiday Home while teachers from University Campuses

and affiliated colleges stay at University Teachers Holiday Home throughout the year. Rules are framed for the

use of Students & Teachers Holiday Home. The rules, if needed are amended from time to time and are

implemented after the approval of the vice-chancellor.

For the stay of the students and teachers the facility of bedding and water is provided to them and the

following steps are taken during the year as per detail given below :

1) The renovation and repair of both the buildings from time to time

2) The supply of the drinking water.

CENTRE FOR CAPACITY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMME

Director : Prof. Jagrup Singh Sekhon

Guru Nanak Dev University started Distance Education from the session 2002-2003 with the aim of

spreading higher education to rural and border areas. Under this programme, a number of technical, professional,

arts, commerce, P.G. Diplomas, Certificate Courses and P.G Degree level courses have been started and they run

parallel to courses offered in the regular mode of education.

Vide the Syndicate meeting (dt. 30-10-2012 para No. 30 and dt. 26.12.2012 para 35) the nomenclature of

Distance Education was changed to Capacity Enhancement Programme and it was decided that higher education

needs to be imparted in remote areas too. The ordinances, syllabi, examinations, evaluation etc. of this programme

are the same as of the regular programme. Unrestricted mobility of students between this programme and

conventional modes of education is the merit of this programme.

During the session 2002-03, the number of Associate Institutes was 36 and 1402 students had been

enrolled. In the session 2012-13, the enrollment has increased to 9,994 and it is expected that during the session

2013-14 approximately 84 Associate Institutes will be operative.

In current session 2013-14, 15 new Associate Institutes are being setup in addition to the existing Instiutes

that have been not only given continuation but also been granted new courses. The quality in delivery of

educational instructions is ensured by way of regular inspections and supervisions of Associate Institutes.

Students of Associate Instiutes are encourged to participate in extra curriculum activities and they also

take part in Cultural Youth Welfare programmes and festivals in the University.

University library was established in the year 1970. Currently, university library has a collection of 4,

45,000 books and other documents. From January to December 2012, the library has purchased 6384 documents

on different subjects. The library remains open from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. on all the working days and from

9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. on Saturday, Sunday and other holidays. The library remains open throughout the year

except on two National Holidays i.e. 26th January and 15th August.

All the new books and gifted books were processed, classified, catalogued and dully accessioned by this

section.

Periodical Section

In the year 2012, 274 research journals (94 Foreign and 180 Indian) were subscribed. Apart from these

journals, university library also received 150 journals from various government departments, educational

institutions and organizations as a gift. Library has also subscribed 416 online journals from IEEE under AICTE

consortium and Scopus database. Free access to 7500+ e-journals and databases are provided by INFLIBNET

UGC INFONET e-journals consortium.

Rare Books & Manuscripts

In the year 2012, 375 Ph.D and M.Phil theses/dissertations were received by this section. 46 manuscripts

of Prof. Pritam Singh‟s collection were fully digitized.

Departmental Libraries

The library has transferred 280 books to different departmental libraries. About

1,13,804 books are available in these departmental libraries.

Binding Unit

The binding of 926 books, 755 journals and 138 month-wise bound volumes of newspapers were done by

this section. In addition to this 108 theses were amended and 10,000 book-pockets were pasted.

SCIFINDER

The library has unlimited access to SCIFINDER a very important source of information for researchers in

sciences.

DELNET

University library is a member of DELNET (Developing Library Network, New Delhi). It helps the

faculty members and researchers to procure those books, articles and documents from other educational

institutions which are not available in our library.

Computer Section

The library has its own computer section. All the library operations such as housekeeping, bibliographical

services, cataloguing entries, preparation of database of books with complete bibliographical details and serial

control are carried out by computer section. Bar coding of new books is done at a rapid speed in order to make the

circulation fully computerized. Section has prepared a number of databases of books, periodicals, manuscripts,

etc. students, research scholars and faculty members are constantly kept aware of the latest

information/books/journals/e-journals through e-mail by this section.

University library has its own web page. The address of this website is http://library.gndu.ac.in.The

library web page can also be accessed from Guru Nanak Dev University website www.gndu.ac.in under the

library option „on campus.‟ This website contains useful information about library services.

OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue)

University library has prepared database of books in English, Hindi & Punjabi languages. As soon as new

books are purchased and processed, their bibliographic description is added to OPAC. Web OPAC is also

available at http://library.gndu.ac.in.

Digital Lab

Soft copies of M.Phil dissertation, Ph.D theses, books, census reports and gazetteers are available in this

section. Electronic journals can be accessed from this section and students are trained regarding the use of e-

During this year, university library has prepared an online bibliography on Guru Gobind Singh which has

also been uploaded on university website for scholars and students.

Conference

Two day national conference on “Librarianship in Digital Era” was organized by Bhai Gurdas Library on

20-21, January 2012.Proceedings of this conference was edited by Dr. H.S. Chopra and published by Uttam

Publications. In this conference a total of 89 papers were presented, out of which 12 papers were presented by the

staff members of Bhai Gurdas Library.This conference was presiding over by Dr. Rajinderjit Kaur Pawar, Dean

Academic Affairs and Keynote address was presented by Dr. Jagdish Arora, Director, INFLIBNET.

The computer centre is presently housed in Maharaja Ranjit Singh Bhawan. At present it has three labs

equipped with latest hardware and software. The computer centre is providing computing facilities for teaching

and research work involving statistical analysis of data and scientific calculations to students, research fellows

and teachers of the university, programmers of the computer centre are also engaged in teaching to the students of

various departments. The staff of computer centre conducts ONLINE admissions of students for the campus,

regional centres. computer centre has designed an application for ONLINE submission of examination forms of

private candidates for supplementary and annual/semester exams. For the even semester, an application has been

designed to generate and issue online hall ticket cum roll number slip to the private candidates. The computer

centre is providing the computer training to the employees of the university as per requirements. The computer

centre maintains and updates the university website. Internet facility is available in all three labs and to the staff of

the computer centre.

HEALTH CENTRE

Introduction

The University has set up its own Health Centre in 1973. It provides free medical help to all students,

teachers, staff & their dependants and retired persons. It is equipped with modern facilities and equipments. It has

two senior Medical Officers, one lady Medical Officer and one Dental surgeon. The centre also provides

alternative medical system in its ayurvedic dispensary, which has been set up by the state government, under the

charge of an Ayurvedic Medical Officer. In addition, there are six pharmacists-assistants, two staff nurses and

three laboratory technicians with sophiscated instruments for all clinical tests including thyroids profile and other

hormone profile and PSA tests. The centre has three ECG machines (one computerized) and an Ultrasound

system. Centre is having an Operation Theatre specifically designed with all kinds of most modern equipments

like Digitally Controlled Hot air ovens, autoclaves glass bead sterlilizer, and complete resuscitation kit, Electric

Suction Machine for the management of emergency patients; and separate male and female wards for admitting

patients. The center also provides immunization facilities for neonates. It also has an Ambulance van which is

geared for emergency services for 24 hours.

800-mA fluoroscopic X-ray unit and Bone Densitometer (DEXA) has been installed in the University

Health Centre. All type of radiological investigations (routine as well as special radiological procedure) whole

body composition and Bone massive density (BMD) measurement with DEXA machine, Mammography, OPG

(Orthopengraphy), spirometry facilities are now available in the Health Centre free of cost to the university

patients.

To manage any causality among girls students, the Health Centre has set up medical room in the girls

hostel itself and a staff nurse is available in the hostel from 8.00 PM to 8.00 AM daily, even on Sunday &

Holidays.

Health Centre is having active interaction with various teaching department like Department of Sports

Med. & Physiotherapy, Physical Education, Microbiology & Pharmaceutical Sciences. Health Centre has

procured audiovisual aids (like OHP, slide projector, projection screen, slide viewers) to impart the class

room/laboratory instructions to students in more effective manner.

Also attached to it, is a full fledged Physiotherapy Centre, which is equipped with a Body Composition

Analyser, Ultrasonic Machines, Motorised Tread Mill and Body Massager and other necessary equipments for

Microwave Diathermy and Infra-Red rays therapy besides all kinds of bath (Sauna, Turkish etc.) facilities and

exercise equipments. The center opens all the seven days in a week and has trained Physiotherapists and

attendants working under Orthopaedic Surgeon who is available daily in the Health Centre from 9.00 a.m. to

11.00 a.m. for consultation. The center is providing special physiotherapy services to the sportsperson.

The master plan of the University Campus was prepared by the renowned architect firm M/s Sachdev

Eggleston, New Delhi.

The department looks after the repair and maintenance of buildings and attends day to day complaints of

residences/offices etc. The work includes the upkeep of above 400 houses, 2 Boys Hostels, 3 Girls' Hostels, Guest

house, college bhawan, sports stadium, hockey ground, swimming pool, auditoriums, meeting halls and other

45 departments.

University campus has a beautiful network of roads which has been well maintained. University has given

24 hours uninterrupted water supply to the campus which is maintained with 5 nos. tubewells. University also

maintains 1 STP and disposal besides network of water supply lines and sewerage lines, has separate system of

storm water and silage sewer.

It also looks after the repair of furniture, addition/alteration of various buildings and construction of

various projects. Department has taken a number of projects during the period of 1.1.2012 to 31.12.2012 as

mentioned below:

The department of training and placements in Guru Nanak Dev University was established in March 1998

to cater the needs of university students for their placements in various institutions/organisations – both Govt. and

Private having national/international reputation. Since then this office has performed remarkably well both in the

matter of placements and providing academic guidance to the students. More than 5,300 students have been

placed through campus/off campus recruitments. Students of professional courses are helped to do their industrial

training in multinational companies in India and abroad. Interaction of faculty members with company officials is

arranged to get feedback regarding requirements of industry. It has helped the departments to revise and update

their syllabi as per industry demands. Database of more than 2000 potential employers has been prepared. Regular

interaction with industry through letters, phone, emails and personal visits is made to develop a long term

relationship between industry and university. Career guidance and personality development seminars, workshops

and guest lectures are organized regularly to improve the performance of students in job market.

The renowned multinational IT company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) conducted campus placements

from 5th to 7th September, 2012 as the Day 1 company for batch 2013. The company selected 225 students and

offered the pay package of Rs. 3.15 Lacs P.A. to B.Tech. students and Rs. 3.25 Lacs P.A. to MCA and M.Tech.

students. It is the highest number of students selected by any company for batch 2013. Moreover it is worth to

mention that TCS has recruited maximum number of students from Guru Nanak Dev University in North India.

Intelligence Bureau, Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India conducted a written test in coordination

with Placement Department for the post of Security Assistant / Ex on 1st January, 2012. Intelligence Bureau also

conducted a written test for the post of ACIO-II/Exe on 23rd

September, 2012. Students from all over Punjab,

Haryana and Himachal Pradesh participated in big number in these tests.

2. Guest Lectures/Faculty Development Programs by multinationals and other employment agencies for

placements

Placement department organizes guest lectures and faculty development programs by big multinational

companies every year.

Accenture, a multinational IT company, organized a program “Diversity Zone” on 27th February, 2012 for

girl students of computer science and electronics. The major objective of the program was to provide

information regarding latest technologies and employment opportunities in IT industry for girls.

Mr. Shoaib Mehraj, North zone hiring lead - campus recruitment, accenture was the main speaker in this

program.

TCS organized best student award & talent fest program on 28th February, 2012. Mr. Sauqat Hussain,

consultant, Mr. Rajit Sikka, academic relationship manager and Ms. Nehla Azmi, Head, talent acquisition

from TCS specially participated in this event. Ms. Surbhi Midha, topper of B.Tech. (CSE), Regional

Campus - Jalandhar was awarded the Best Student Award. Apart from that a quiz competition and fun

activities were also conducted on this occasion.

Infosys, A big multinational IT company organized a special program named “Infy 3.0 Roadshow” on

13th March, 2012. Mr. Shan Vats, Regional Manager, Infosys was the main speaker. The main objective

of the program was to guide the students about expectations of IT industry from them. The company also

organized a Fun Filler Session for the students.

Placement department organized 2 guest lectures by the officials of accenture on the topics “Cloud

Computing” and “Teachable Point of View” on 15th March, 2012. Mr. Amit Kumar Kushwaha and Mr.

Rohit Dhar, Vice president technology participated from accenture as guest speakers.

Placement department organized a faculty development program in coordination with TCS on the topic

“Telecom Convergance” on 13th July, 2012. Dr Sandeep Agrawal, account manager, TCS participated as

main speaker. The faculty of computer science and electronics departments participated in the program.

Mr. Tarunjit Singh, an alumni of Guru Nanak Dev University in Aricent Technologies, conducted a guest

lecture for our students of Computer Science and Electronics Departments on 7th October, 2012. The topic

of the guest lecture was “C++ templates and introduction to standard template libraries”. Mr. Tarunjit

Singh has worked in multinational IT company Amdocs and is currently employed in Aricent

Technologies, Gurgaon.

A faculty development program was organized in coordination with multinational IT company Accenture

on the topic “Current & Emerging Trends in Computer Science, Electronics and Information Technology”

on 11th December, 2012. The faculty members from computer science and electronics departments

participated in the program. Mr. Krishna Perna, Vice President, Client Services Lead, Accenture was the

main speaker for this program.

3. Career Counselling/Personality Development

Placement department guides the students of all courses for different employment opportunities,

fellowships and scholarships.

Placement department also helps students in getting industrial training in national and multinational

companies in India.

Placement department organizes seminars and workshops for personality development of the students.

4. MoU

Placement department signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with multinational IT company

IBM. Under this MoU, the company has established a Centre of Excellence at Guru Nanak Dev

University, Amritsar, where the students are given free of cost training on latest tools and technologies

every year by experts. The company is also providing necessary software free of cost. Such training helps

in campus placement of students resulting in more placement percentage.

5. Other Activities

a) Visit to the Industrial Houses:

Regular interaction with industry through letters, emails, telephone calls and personal visits besides

holding workshops on the campus by the multinationals is a regular feature.

b) Printing of placement brochures:

The placement brochures of professional courses are printed every year by placement department, which

are sent to potential employers. This helps the recruitment companies to know the areas of

specializations and make mind for recruitment.

c) Generation of Databases:

Placement department collects the databases of students from all professional courses, which are sent to

concerned companies. It has also maintained database of various national and multinational companies

from disciplines like IT, management, pharmaceutical sciences and Social Sciences to provide a

medium of effective communication between Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar & prospective

employers.

31 January 2012. As it is celebrated every year, in 2012 National Youth Festival was celebrated at Mangalore,

Karnatka State from 12 to 16 January. Three NSS Volunteers from Guru Nanak Dev University participated in

this festival.

A camp on the theme of youth Employability was organised at Swami Parmanand college of Engineering

and Technology, Lalru Distt. Mohali from 28 February to 3 March 2012, in association with Rajiv Gandhi

National Institute, Sri Perumbedur (Tamil Nadu) out of ten volunteers who participate in the camp, Six were from

Guru Nanak Dev University Regional Campus, Jalandhar. These were:- Sachin Bharti, Anmol Soni, Jaspreet

Singh Arora, Prince Kapoor, Milanmeet Kaur and Monika Kaushal. Four volunteers Rini Bhatia, Arpna Saini,

komal Soni and Aditi-were from Guru Nanak University College Jalandhar.

A state level meeting of NSS Co-ordinators of the Universities of Punjab was organised by Assistant

Advisor, Regional center, Chandigarh at Chandigarh on 11 April 2012. NSS Co-ordinator, Guru Nanak Dev

University participated in this meeting. NSS activities done in the last year were thoroughly discussed and

measures to make NSS more service centric, were deliberated upon.

On 12 April 2012, NSS Unit of Law Department, Guru Nanak Dev University, organsied a Blood group

Testing and Blood Donation camp on the University Campus Prof. Ajaib Singh Brar, Vice Chancellor Guru

Nanak Dev Unversity inaugurate this camp. Lauding this activity of the NSS unit, Vice Chancellor stated that

such camps should be biannual affair. He honored the blood donors with star Donor Trophy. In this camp, 500

students got there blood group tested and 133 students donated their blood. The camp was held in association

with Guru Nanak Dev University Blood bank wing.

Under the programme of “My Earth, My Duty” 8400 saplings were planted in different colleges from 15

August to 21 August 2012. This programme was organised to commemorate 65th Independence Day. A similar

programme was organsied at Attari Border in collaboration with Zee T V. More than 200 volunteers from Khalsa

College Amritsar and Trai Shatabdi College, Amritsar participated in this programme. The volunteers pledged to

plant more and more saplings so as to purify the atmosphere and save the ecology. Volunteers of Trai Shatabdi

college presented a skit on this subject. This programme was cast live and shown in 70 Countries of the world Mr.

Gurdeep Singh Bhatti, Assistant Advisor, NSS, Govt. of India, Regional Centre, Chandigarh, presented over this

function.

All the units of NSS celebrated the Communal Harmony Day on 17 August 2012. The volunteers pledged

to maintains peace and Communal Harmony at any cost. For participating in the Republic Day parade, a Pre-

republic Day parade camp was organised at Guru Nanak Dev University Campus on 27.9.2013 and 34 volunteers

were selected for next selection.

NSS volunteers organsied National unity week from 19 to 25 November was consecrated to National

unity, 20 November to the protection of Minorities, 21 November to Linguistic affinity, 22 November to poor and

marginalised section, 23 November to cultural unity, 24 November to empowerment of woman and 25 November

to ecology.

In 2012, during autumn and winter break, seven day NSS camps were organised in college. In these

camps, socially relevant topics were debated. Lectures by scholars were also organised on important topics like

pollution, pulse polio, Aids, foeticide, intoxicants, health, Communal harmony. Curse of dowry, demographic in

balance, and merits of education.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (ALLIED TEACHING)

Introuction

Guru Nanak Dev University accredited by NAAC with 'A' grade was established on November 24, 1969

to mark the 500th birth Anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It is both a residential and affiliating university.

Guru Nanak Dev University has made phenomenal progress in the field of sports in the Inter-University, National

and International competitions. The Department of Physical Education (Allied Teaching) was set up in 1970. The

Department started organizing Inter-College tournaments from 1970 itself and sent teams for the Inter-University

tournaments for the first time in 1974-75. From the very beginning, sports committee for men and women were

formed to guide and coordinate the sports activities and to organize games and sports in the affiliated colleges to

raise the university teams for Inter University and other tournaments.

On the basis of the performance in the Inter-College tournaments, various universities teams are selected

for participation in the Inter-University competitions which are organized by the Association of Indian

Universities, New Delhi. Each year, the Department of Physical Education (Allied Teaching) organize 83 Inter-

college (men and women) tournaments and sends 73 universities teams (M & W) for participation in the Inter-

University competitions. In order to attain excellence in sports, coaching camps for selected men and women

teams are organized at Hill Station every year during summer vacation for imparting physical fitness and

conditioning training. Liberal facilities are provided to the players who participate in the Inter-University

tournaments as members of Guru Nanak Dev University teams in terms of free boarding and lodging during

coaching camps and cash prize money to those players who win the positions in Inter-University National and

International level competitions.

Today, in the field of sports, Guru Nanak Dev University is rated as the Top University amongst 368

universities in the country. The unparallel achievement of Guru Nanak Dev University in sports is much due to its

sportsmen and sportswomen of the colleges as well as a mechanism of 'right type of training' 'right type of

selection' and 'right type of administration' which remained the key factors in achieving high standards in sports at

Inter-University, National and International levels.

SPORTS ACHIEVEMENTS

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy was instituted in 1956-57 as a running trophy by the Ministry of

Education, Govt. of India. This running trophy is awarded by the President of India each year to a University

which has all round best performance in sports at Inter-University, National and International competitions. Guru

Nanak Dev University started its actual participation in Inter-University and other tournaments in the year 1974

and since then, the University has been winning one or the other position for this trophy. It goes to the credit of

Guru Nanak Dev University that out of 37 Years of its actual participation, it has won India's coveted Maulana

Abul Kalam Azad Trophy for 21 times, claimed runners-up position 12 times and attained third position 2 times.

It reflects the keen interest and importance attached to the sports activities by the university authorities for

achieving excellence in sports. The colleges affiliated to the University, which are spread over six districts

bordering Pakistan are storehouse of talent in sports and other youth activities. The university is proud of its

affiliated colleges, their Principals, faculty and the students. The trophy for the year 2010-11 and 2011-12 is yet to

be decided.

Dr. B.L. Gupta General Championship Trophy

Dr. B.L. Gupta General Championship Trophy was instituted by the Association of Indian Universities,

New Delhi in the year 1980-81. This trophy is awarded to a University on the basis of excellent achievement in

the Inter-University (Men and Women) tournaments. Guru Nanak Dev University has won the trophy for the very

first year of the inception of this trophy in 1980-81. So far, our University has won this trophy for 14 times, got

runners up position for 6 times and remained third for 5 times.

Osmania University Platinum Jubilee Trophy

Osmania University Platinum Jubilee Trophy was introduced by the Association of Indian Universities,

New Delhi in 1995-96. This trophy is awarded to a university that secures highest points in women sports in the

Inter-University tournaments. Guru Nanak Dev University has won this trophy for 8 times and remained runners-

up and third once each.

Kridamaharishi Shri Meghnath Negeskhar Trophy

Kridamaharishi Shri Meghnath Negeskhar Trophy was introduced by the Association of Indian

Universities, New Delhi in 1995-96 and is awarded each year to a University which secures highest points

exclusively in Men's events in the Inter-University tournaments. Guru Nanak Dev University has won this trophy

for 7 times, remained runners-up two times and third once.

Sports Facilities and Infrastructure Available at University Campus

An area of 25 acres of land is earmarked for playfield has already been developed into various

grounds/playfields as under:

Guru Nanak Dev University organized the following All India Inter-University Tournaments in the year

2012-2013

1. All India Inter-University Air Rifle and Air Pistol Shooting (M& W) Championships 2012-13 at its

campus shooting range from 14-18 January, 2013. About 50 teams comprising 400 players from

different universities of the country participated in this competition. The opening ceremony was

performed on 14 January, 2013 at 02.30 pm. at the university campus. Prof. Dr. (Mrs) Rajinderjit Kaur

Pawar, Dean Academic Affairs, Guru Nanak Dev University inaugurated the championship. Brig.

Harcharan Singh, Arjuna Awardee was the Guest of Honor. Guru Nanak Dev University Women teams

were third in Air Rifle and Air Pistol Competition. One shooter got gold in the individual event.

Guru Nanak Dev University shall organize the following All India

Inter-University Tournaments

2. All India Inter-University Archery (M&W) Championship 2012-13 at its campus main ground from 04-

09 February, 2013. About 100 teams comprising 570 archers from different universities of the country

are participating in this competition. Sh. Shiv Dular Singh Dhillon, PCS, Director Sports Punjab,

Chandigarh shall be the Chief Guest of the day. Prof. Dr. (Mrs) Rajinderjit Kaur Pawar, Dean Academic

Affairs, Guru Nanak Dev University shall preside the championship.

3. North Zone Inter-University Kho-Kho (W) Championship from 13-16 February, 2013 followed by All

India Inter-University Kho-Kho (W) Championship 2012-13 from 18-22 February, 2013 at its campus

grounds. About 50 teams comprising 500 players from different universities of the country are

participating in this competition.

FACILITIES & INCENTIVES

Prize Distribution Function: Guru Nanak Dev University organized its 42nd Annual Sports Prize

Distribution Function for the year 2011-2012 that was held on 15 March 2012 (Thursday) at Guru

Nanak Bhawan Auditorium at the University Campus, Amritsar. Padmashree S. Bishan Singh Bedi

gave away cash prizes to about 250 outstanding players who secured positions in Inter-

University/National/ International level competitions. The officials who accompanied the position

holder teams, were also honored. Besides, trophies were awarded to the position holding colleges.

Hockey Stadium : The new Hockey Astro Turf at the university campus is ready for the players. The

sitting capacity has been enhanced and flood lighting is available in the stadium.

Swimming Pool of International Standard has already been put to use for competi- tions/practice.

Indoor Multipurpose Gymnasium has been furnished with Mapple wood flooring, wall panelling,

sound proofing and false ceiling. It has been put to use for various inter-college/inter-university

competitions.

Velodrome : The Velodrome at the university campus is ready for use. The Velodrome shall groom

the budding cyclists of this area and to project them in the inter-university, national and international

competitions.

Shooting Range has been constructed at the university campus so that we could provide this facility

to the shooters at the university campus and to field them for the inter-university, national and

international level competitions. The Range is ready to use for the shooters. It is equipped with 30

target facility. Recently All India Inter-University Shooting was organized at University shooting

range.

Physical Conditioning Unit with various fitness stations has been set-up at the Students Centre for

attaining physical fitness for the players in their intended games.

Sports Hostel: Sports Hostel with a capacity of 200 players is available for the sportsmen/women

during Inter-college, Inter-University Tournaments/ Coaching Camps. It has hot water facilities

available for the players.

Incentives: The outstanding players/athletes are awarded Roll of honour, prizes and other

concessions. From the session 2012-13, the cash prize money has been increased. Now, cash Prize of

Rs.l2,000/- is awarded to 1st position holders, Rs.I0,000/- for 2nd and Rs. 8,000/- to 3rd position

holders in Inter-University Tournaments. For National positions, cash prize of Rs. 10,000/- for 1st

position holders, Rs.8,000/- for 2nd and Rs. 5,000/- for 3rd position holders is given. For

International positions, cash prize of Rs. 25,000/- for 1st position holders, Rs. 20,000/- for 2nd

position holder, Rs 15,000/- for 3rd position holder and Rs. 5,000/- for fourth position is given.

Concession: In case of students who have participated in the Inter-University and/or in the National

Tournaments as members of University or State team, the requirement of marks for purpose of

admission to M.A. and other post-graduate courses is reduced by 5%.

NOTE: The certificate for participation in the National as member of the State team must be issued or got

endorsed by the Director Sports of the State concerned.

More than 125 NSO Scholarships @ Rs. 6000/- per annum have been awarded to the outstanding

players of this University by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt of India through Sports

Authority of India, New Delhi which is the highest number of scholarships secured by any other

STUDENT HOSTELS

MATA NANAKI GIRLS HOSTEL-I

Warden : Dr. Bhavnita Dhillon,

Girls Hostel No- I established in 1973 provides accommodation to various students studying in different

arts departments at the university campus. There are 175 rooms having intake capacity of 470 students.

Hostel is well equipped with all the modern facilities such as Wi-Fi, well furnished reading room, PCO

with STD, photostat facility, medical room with para-medical services and provision store etc. Geysers and water

coolers with aqua guards have been provided in the residential blocks. The mess of the hostel is being run on

contract basis and dining hall is equipped with water-cooler along with purifiers and fly-insect killers. The facility

of laundry and ironing the clothes is available within the precincts of the hostel. Hostel has spacious and beautiful

green lawns and well furnished guest room for the visitors. The hostel is also fitted with the public address system

to contact the residents.

The hostel has well equipped common room with all necessary facilities such as L.C.D with Dish TV

facility. Leading newspapers and magazines and periodicals in Punjabi, Hindi and English are subscribed.

Provision for indoor and outdoor games like badminton, table tennis and carom board is also there. A special care

is taken with regard to their mental and physical health for the purpose of which lectures, yoga and aerobic classes

are also organized from time to time.

MATA NANAKI GIRLS HOSTEL-II

Girls Hostel No. II began in the year 1992-93 and currently houses 633 students in six blocks having 230

rooms in all. Hostel mess is run on contract basis and strives to provide healthy and hygienic food to the students.

A separate canteen serving snacks is also within the hostel complex. The facility for photocopying, laundry,

stationary, tailoring, shop for daily use items is available within the hostel premises. In the past year (2012), box

type wooden beds have been provided to the students in the hostel. All washrooms are equipped with geysers.

Water coolers are installed in all hostel wings and mess. The hostel provides a secure environment for students

along with the means for recreation. A well equipped common room has a television with dish TV facility and

indoor games. Hostel‟s reading room subscribes to many news papers and journals in English, Hindi & Punjabi.

A computer lab with Wi-Fi facility is also established for the students. The regional/cultural festivals are

celebrated with student‟s participation from time to time in the hostel with special meals.

Since September 2012, GH-II is also having charge of working women hostel and Y-type reserve hostel.

Currently there are 125 students in Y-type hostel and 28 residents in working women hostel. In the year 2012, 09

geysers in Y-type and 14 geysers were installed in working women hostel.

MATA NANAKI GIRLS HOSTEL-III

Teej festival was celebrated on a grand jointly by three Girls Hostels. There was all fun and frolic with

students enjoying on swings, dancing, buying bangles from hawkers and feasting. Girls Hostel-III was decorated

all over with lights on Diwali and wore a festive look. On the occasion of Guruparb, Girls Hostel-III welcomed

prabhat pheri while the premises dazzled with colorful lights. On Lohri, students lit fire in the hostel premises and

then danced to the tune of music for hours together. On all these occasions, speical dinner was served to the

students in the Hostel Mess.

SAHIBZADA ZORAWAR SINGH BOYS‟ HOSTEL

The hostel was started in October 2000 with a capacity to accommodate 198 residents, and had 66

dormitories for the students. A new block of 68 rooms to house 136 students was constructed in 2003 and later in

2010 another block was added with 128 rooms for research scholars.

FACULTIES

The hostel has two dining halls where the messes are running on contract basis. The mess-halls are

furnished with quality furniture. The kitchen areas are spacious, and airy and there is power backup from inverter

in the mess area. Water cooling machines, Deep freezers and chest cooler etc are part of the kitchen area. The

canteen is being run in the hostel by a contractor and the services are available to the residents all day long where

quality products are available. Mess committee observes the working of mess under the supervision of warden.

Besides this, water coolers and geysers are installed in all three block.

Two Common Rooms with 40" LCD screens and Dish TV are there for the students. Provision for indoor

games like Table Tennis and Carom-Board is also there. Thirteen leading newspapers in English, Hindi & Punjabi

Magazines & periodicals are subscribed for the benefit of the students. Arrangements are there for Out Door

Games also. The hostel a reading room where 100 students can study at a time and is open 24 hours.

The hostel premises are internet ready though_Wi-Fi technology and salr lights, solar Geysers are

installed in the hostel.

SAHIBZADA JUJHAR SINGH BOYS‟ HOSTEL

Warden : Dr. Darya

With an initial capacity of only 35 residents in 1973, the Boys‟ Hostel is now providing accommodation

to about 697 students of 35 Departments. At present there are five blocks named A,B,C,D & E consisting of 356

cubical rooms in total. A category wise list of students is given hereunder.

Mess

There are two messes in the hostel and both are run on contract basis @ Rs.23/- per diet. The Mess -cum-

hostel welfare Committees comprising of five to seven students each, run these messes under the supervision of

the Hostel Warden. The dinning halls are furnished with quality furniture and curtains. Cooking gas has been

installed in both the messes. R.O. Systems are fitted with the water coolers. Two large size desert-coolers are

fitted in both the messes. The facility of inverters has also been provided in the messes to meet the break-down of

power. Separate residential facility has been provided to the mess boys who prepare and serve meals in the mess.

Water Coolers & Geysers

Geysers and water coolers have been provided in all the blocks of the hostel. To save electricity solar

water heaters have been installed in the bathrooms of four blocks and in the messes. Recently two big water

coolers each of capacity 150 ltrs. have been installed near the conteen and the messes.

Solar Lights

Solar Lights have been installed in the hostel lawns.

Canteen

Two canteens inside the hostel are being run by two separate contractors. The canteen services are

available to the residents from 6-00 a.m. to 11-00 p.m. The canteens are provided with adequate furniture and

other fittings. Snacks, tea, coffee, juice, milk products and other services are provided.

Common Rooms Facilities

The hostel has two common rooms. One is well-equipped with 42" LCD and other with 29"colour

television sets, with facility of dish. Provision for indoor games like Table Tennis and Carom Board is also there.

Fourteen leading newspapers in English, Hindi & Punjabi and fourteen magazines and periodicals are subscribed

for the benefit of students. Common Room facilities are available to the students from 7-00 A.M. to 11-00 P.M.

Reading Room

A new Reading Room was recently constructed. It has a capacity for about 100 students and adequate

furniture. It is furnished with new curtains and two desert coolers. The students have access to the internet

through wi-fi.

Out Door Games

Arrangements have also been made for out-door games. A volley-ball court has been prepared in the

hostel premises. Similarly, two badminton courts are available.

LAWNS

There are beautiful lawns and squares inside the hostel. Trees, shrubs and colourful seasonals flowers add

to their beauty. The Solar Lights installed in these lawns help in keeping the area illuminated at night. Recently

eleven benches were put up in the lawns.

Guest Room

A guest room is kept ready for the stay of parents/relatives of the students. Another guest room is

furnished with an eight seater sofa set for the visitors who come to meet their wards in the hostel.

Computerisation of Hostel Record

The office and the co-operative mess records are being maintained in computerized data sheets. A brief

bio-data of all the hostel residents is also maintained.

Water Suppply

To meet the water requirements of the hostel residents, a submersible pump has been installed near the

hostel. R.O. systems have been fitted with each water cooler to provide clean water to the residents.

GIRLS HOSTEL

Guru Nanak Dev University Campus, Ladhewali, Jalandhar

Girls Hostel, Guru Nanak Dev University Campus, Ladhewali, Jalandhar provides residence and other

basic amenities to 320 girl students. The hostel administration is devoted for the multifaceted development of the

hostel for the benefit of girl students. Keeping in view the increasing number of students eleven more rooms were

constructed last year. As of now the hostel is a four storied building with 80 rooms in the hostel for the students.

In addition to the residential rooms there is a common room and reading room for the students. There is mess in

the hostel along with a neat kitchen that is furnished to provide hygienic food for the students. The hostel has

adequate power backup to provide uninterrupted power supply.

The students are provided with all kinds of modern facilities. There is 24 hour Wi-Fi Internet connectivity

in the hostel. For the recreation of students there is a 46" LCD television installed with DTH service in the

common room. The common room is furnished with Jogger, Exercise Cycle, Table Tennis, Carom Board and

other indoor games. Daily newspapers in English, Punjabi and Hindi are available for students along with six

different periodicals/magazines.

Attendant is available round the clock for the aid of students. To provide medical assistance to the

students a nurse is deputed from 8.00 pm to 6 a.m. In case of emergency there is provision of a van with driver.

To provide hospitable environment there is a well furnished visitor‟s room and seating arrangement is also

provided in the lobby area of the hostel.

There are water coolers attached with RO systems to provide clean drinking water. For the facility of

students there are two large coolers in the common room and reading room. The bathrooms of the hostel are

furnished with geysers to provide hot bathing water in winters. There is also provision of canteen in the hostel for

the students.

Student committees such as Mess Committee, Discipline Committee, Recreation Committee were

constituted for the smooth functioning of hostel. Teej celebrations to welcome the new students at the start of the

session and farewell celebration at the end of session is a regular feature in the hostel.
