GURU NANAK DEV UNIVERSITY REGIONAL CAMPUS
GURDASPUR
Associate Dean : Sandeep Kumar Sood, Ph.D.
INTRODUCTION : The Regional Campus Gurdaspur was started in 1999 on the persistent demand
for higher studies and professional courses in the area. Teaching
programme of the campus includes B.Tech (computer science & engineering),
B.Tech (electronics communication & engineering), MCA(three year course),
LL.B. Hons. (FYIC) and M.B.A. (two years). Besides teaching and practical
training, the students have to undergo compulsory industrial training in case of
B.Tech (CSE), B.Tech (ECE), MCA(TYC) & MBA students and court visits for
LL.B. students. Within a short span of time, the campus has come up with well-
equipped departmental libraries, comprising around 19839 books pertaining to
computer science, electronics technology, laws and management. The library is
subscribing all the major dailies, journals and magazines. Every department in
the campus has its own computer labs to impart training to the students. A
placement cell, in coordination with the placement officer at Guru Nanak Dev
University Campus, Amritsar has been formed to assist the students of all
departments in the campus to produce professionals to meet the dynamically
changing trends in the industry.
In 2002, Guru Nanak Dev University took an innovative step by
establishing department of computer science & electronics engineering and
added to its curriculum full time B.Tech. (CSE) & B.Tech. (ECE) and M.C.A
(FYIC) to cater to the needs of industry. In 2007 M.C.A. (TYC) was started.
In 2013, new courses M.Tech (computer science & engineering), M.Tech
(electronics communication & engineering), M.Com and B.Com, B.Com
(professional) are going to be started.
Further keeping pace with the evolving cyber age, the university
envisaged dedicated internet connectivity (10 Mbps) and four high end
programming cum computing labs. There being a revolution in the
telecommunication world, advanced electronics labs have been set up. Wi-Fi
internet connectivity is provided in both the boys and girls hostels. All
departments in the campus have been provided internet connectivity. One
[284]
internet lab having 10 high configuration computers had been provided in girls
hostel.
At present the faculty members use lectures, seminars with the aid of
OHP or LCD projectors and GD as different teaching methodologies. In the
department of computer science and electronic engineering, all the lecture
theatres are equipped with LCD projectors and public address systems with all
modern facilities.

admission in the college.
The college library is stocked with large volumes of standard books and has a large reading hall. Apart
from science lab and labs for various practical subjects, the college has a modern computer lab with 30 computers.
Keeping in view the transportation problems faced by students coming from far-flung areas, the college
has arranged buses in contract with bus owners, running on 6 various routes covering an area upto 50 kms.
Parents-teachers association (PTA) was established in the previous session (2011-2012) comprising of
parents of students and two senior teachers, which held meeting on regular intervals for the multi–dimensional
welfare of the college. Apart from meeting various other requirements of the college, this year‟s PTA contribution
includes providing safe drinking water to the students by getting R.O. system, Aqua guards installed, remedial
english classes of the students during summer vacation and empanneling a restorer for the college library. Dr.

has always played active part and the entry of outside elements is strictly prohibited from the college campus. In
order to ensure strict surveillance, each student is provided with an identity card and vehicle pass.
All the students of the college have been divided into 19 tutorial groups under the charge of senior tutor
Dr. Manjinder Kaur, Assistant Professor and at least one tutorial meet-a month is ensured. The main purpose of
these meets is to apprise students of various rules and their attendance percentage from time to time. Another
important aspect of these meets is to enhance students-teacher interaction and assess the problems faced by them
in order to provide all possible solutions.

This college was established in 2011. It is the only constituent college in Amritsar district. This college
which came into being with the cooperation of UGC, is providing higher education to the students of this entire
region. The entire administrative functioning of the college is regulated by Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.
It is situated in the lush green surroundings of the countryside far from the din of the city. It has a sprawling
campus covering 13 acres. It is located on the Amritsar-Jalandhar bypass adjoining the Verka chowk. This college
has proved to be beneficial especially for those students who had been deprived of higher education because of
poor financial conditions.
Guru Nanak Dev University came into being on November 24, 1969. So the university celebrates
November 24 as its Foundation Day every year. The day was celebrated with gusto in all the constituent colleges
as well. On this occasion the sacred ceremony of the Prakash of Guru Granth Sahib was observed. The sangat
shared the langar after shabad kirtan and ardas. Prof. Ved Prakash, the chairman of the UGC came as the special
guest. Prof. Ajaib Singh Brar, Vice-Chancellor of this university escorted him to the college. He was also
accompanied by Prof. M.S.Hundal, Dean College Development Council. Prof. Ved Prakash was elated on seeing
the grand building of the college, the extraordinary strength of the students, and the huge celebration. He
emphasized in his speech, “My own sister was deprived of higher education as there was no college in my village.
So it is my heartfelt desire that good educational institutions should be established in rural areas so that the
unprivileged rural lot may not be deprived of higher education.” He ensured that the college would be provided
the required aid in the years to come.
[301]
The foundation stone was ceremonially laid by our honourable Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ajaib Singh Brar

function which included the ceremonial Path as well as shabad kirtan. Langar pratha with all the sacred fervour
was observed. Along with the other voluntary services, the students partook in cleaning and polishing the shoes of
the devotees. In this religious ceremony, the students and teachers performed sewa with great devotion. Prof. Brar
apprised the audience, particularly, of the progressive strategies being adopted by the University to ensure the
holistic development of the college. He also congratulated the staff and the students regarding the elaborate
celebrations.
Prof. Ajaib Singh Brar, our honourable Vice-Chancellor, has exhibited great courage in the project of
setting up this college. He has put in all possible efforts, and has exerted his mental and physical energies for the
betterment of this college. He takes active interest in the day-to-day functioning of the college. Every need of the
college is dealt with on priority basis. Prof. M.S. Hundal, Dean CDC, is yet another big support for these newly
established colleges. His creative vision and liberal attitude proved to be a blessing for the college. Owing to the
efforts of Prof. Brar and Prof. Hundal, all the four constituent colleges of Guru Nanak Dev University are
functioning quite successfully in Punjab. Among the four, Verka College is the leading one in terms of the
number of students, and the courses being offered. Prof. Brar aims to shape this college as a model college and
efforts are being made to attain this aim.
This is a co-educational college. It offers courses in all the streams i.e. arts, science, computer science and
Commerce. Many different courses like B.A., B.Sc. (Economics, non-medical, computer science, fashion
designing, information technology), BCA, B.Com. Regular, B.Com. Professional, BBA, PGDCA and DCA have
been started. In session 2012-13, 1428 new students have joined different courses and it has raised the total
number of students to 1826. By true means, the college is fulfilling the aim and objective of the Government and
UGC by offering opportunity for higher education.
During this session, 10 regular, 28 contract and 8 part-time teachers provided able guidance to the
students and taught with full devotion. Besides fulfilling the criterion of essential qualification i.e. M.A., M.Sc.,

Among these 26 teachers are UGC-NET qualified.
The teachers visit all the surrounding senior secondary schools in the month of February to apprise the
students with the new courses being offered by the college. They distribute pamphlets and attend to their queries
with personal and interactive approach. Special attention is paid to co-curricular activities in the college. NSS
wing has been established. Attempts are being made to introduce NCC wing as well for both boys and girls.
Students also have their 'sahit sabha' or the literary society for encouragement of literary interests. Guest lectures
are also organized on different topics like personality development, spoken skills and current issues to ascertain
the holistic development of the students. Tutorial groups are also an essential feature of the academic curriculum.
The meetings of the PTA committee are held frequently and PTA fund is used for the welfare of college as well as
students. The funds are used as planned by the committee. Different teams have been formed to encourage sports

the teacher helps the students in providing books. There is also a provision of special lectures for weak students.
[302]
The whole staff is completely devoted to the college. Teachers have their own staff-club. The staff has its own
common kitchen where tea and afternoon meals are prepared. There is emphasis on nurturing a constructive
environment so that quality education is imparted to the students. The students are given the opportunity to
provide feedback through proforma. The students who are weak in the subject of english are given extra classes.
The class-tests are conducted every month. The senior teachers constitute an inspection committee to keep a
check over the syllabus covered in the class and the quality of the teaching material provided to the students. The
teachers are guided and made aware of innovative methods of teaching. The class of a teacher who is absent is
managed by another teacher. The parents are ensured that the college takes full responsibility of the academic
needs of the students and the full fee will be refunded if any teacher does not take the class. The teachers abide by
the rule of a 6 hours 40 minutes stay in the college. They are required to put their signatures in the attendance
register twice. The use of mobile phones by the students is strictly prohibited. Jammers have also been installed to
ensure that the students do not carry mobiles. The teachers can avail the benefit of the college telephone. The
college has a stress-free and amiable work environment which promotes a healthy work culture. The college is,
thus, becoming a centre of attraction for academic excellence throughout the region. The students are availing
maximum help and benefit from this newly founded educational institution.
The college has a big and computerized library. It has important books on all the subjects. To enrich the
library, new encyclopedias have been added to it. It is a matter of pride that some rare books on different subjects
are available in our library. A committee has been constituted to inspect the functioning of the library and to
ensure all the library facilities for all the students. New books are added in the library on the recommendation of
this committee. Prof. Puneet Randhawa, Prof. Nisha Chhabra, and Prof. Jatinder kaur are the members of this

responsible for preparing and drafting the academic calendar as per the university syllabi. The council also
ensures that the teachers do full justice to the students. It keeps a check over the syllabus taught in the classes. It
also assesses the level of weekly as well as monthly tests conducted in the classrooms. Any discrepancy whether
in academics or elsewhere is brought forth under discussion and efforts are made to eradicate the weak points and
implement the new rules as and when needed. S. Sukhmaninder Pal Singh, Madam Sonika Thakur, S.
Jasminderpal Singh and Madam Manjit Kaur are its active members.
The flood lights in the college campus were inaugurated on September 13, 2012. Prof. Inderjeet Singh,
