LAUDATIO

Владимиру Ароновичу Лившицу — 90 лет!

Данный том — сборник научных статей, которые были собраны по случаю славно-го юбилея. Идея тома возникла спонтанно и, по меркам редакционной работы, совсемнедавно, всего за год до юбилея. Владимир Аронович, человек огромных знаний и ще-дрой души, всегда приковывал к себе коллег и учеников. И его публикации, и длин-ные подробные письма, и пометы на полях и оборотах данных ему на рецензированиечерновиков или гранок, часто превышающие написанное самим автором по объемуи почти всегда — по значимости, и выступления на ученых заседаниях, и застольные

речи, и рассказы, вообще, яркость личности и значимость его трудов — стали причи-ной того, что в очень короткие сроки 64 автора прислали свои работы. Пришли статьииз Санкт-Петербурга и Москвы, Ташкента и Нукуса, Неаполя и Берлина, Оксфордаи Бордо, Нью-Йорка и Пекина, Лондона и Парижа, Иерусалима и Тегерана. Все нашиавторы знают В.А. Лившица по публикациям, очень многие знакомы с ним и лично,многие бывают у него в гостях, многим он помогал советом, для многих был и остает-ся Учителем, некоторые его так и именуют — Мо’аллэм. Есть в сборнике и его сослу-живцы по «Золотому веку» ленинградской иранистики, и даже старшие коллеги Вла-димира Ароновича!

Не будем здесь останавливаться на биографии юбиляра — многое было указано

в предыдущем, втором по счету, фестшрифте в честь В.А. Лившица1, кое-что можно

узнать из опубликованных anecdota о нем2 и из некоторых материалов настоящегосборника. Библиография В.А. пополняет список трудов, размещенный на сайте Инсти-тута восточных рукописей РАН и доведенный до 2005 г.3 Из этих дополнений — 26 но-

меров за восемь лет, включая две монографии — понятно, что Владимир Ароновичвстречает свое девяностолетие полным сил и творческих идей, причем, как и прежде,занимается исследованием конкретного и крайне сложного материала, не воспаряяв эмпиреи теоретических рассуждений.

Сборник собирался в очень сжатые сроки — нашей целью было преподнести гото-вое издание к юбилею — и для достижения этой цели издатели сочли возможным от-казаться от единообразия в оформлении статей, отчасти — ссылочного аппарата и ре-дактирования работ на иностранных языках. Этим же объясняется то, что сборникограничен иранистической тематикой, а ведь готовность участвовать в радостном на-учном событии высказывали и многие коллеги, работающие в смежных областях фи-лологии и истории.

Вместе с тем мы надеемся, Владимир Аронович, что это собрание очень разных,но неизменно связанных с Вашими научными интересами статей, вас в чем-то заинте- ресует, а в чем-то, возможно, и порадует. И, как написано в письме Nov. 6 (стк. 11–12)с горы Муг, «а известие, которое может быть для тебя радостью, это (самое) и для нас(радость)»4.

Bactria, Bāxδī-, BalxThe name of the land Bactria and of its capital city is attested in various forms: Avestan bāxδī-, Old Persian b-a-

x-t-r-i-š, Elamo-Persian pá-ak-ši-iš and pá-ak-tar-ri-iš, Greek Βάκτρα, Βακτριανή, Aramaic bḥtry, Middle Persian bʼḥl, Arabic and New Persian balx, and last but not least, Bactrian βαχλο. An attempt is made to explain thesediverging forms.

The names of the land of Bactria1 and of its eponymous capital city, mediaeval Balx,can all be derived from an Old Iranian form *bāxϑrī -. The oldest datable attestation of thename is in Darius’ Bisitun inscription, where it occurs three times in the Elamite version as pá-ak-ši-iš 2 , for the Old Persian nom. sg. *bāxçīš , with the usual OP development of ϑr to ç.

By contrast, the Old Persian versions of the Achaemenid inscriptions have not this, but theevidently non-Persian form b-a-x-t-r-i-š , that is: nom. sg. bāxtriš . The Greek names Βάκτρα,Βακτριανή could represent (Median?) *bāxtri-, or just as well *bāxϑri-.

In just one of the recently discovered Bactrian documents from Northern Afghanistan(cd 9) we find the name (from the context evidently that of the city, not the country) βαχλο, presumably for / βāxl /, the ancestor of the Arabic and New Persian form Balx. This surprisingdevelopment of Iranian ϑr to Bactrian λ in post-consonantal position (a shift that does not oc-cur in any other Iranian language) is illustrated also by μορλο “death” < *murθra- < *mṛθra-,and by the divine name ορλαγνο < *wurθragna < *wṛθragna-. In initial and post-vocalic position, however, ϑr becomes /hr /, as in the day-name μιυρο /mihr / < *miθra-, the month-

name μιρογανο < *miθra-kāna-, also μιυροασανο etc. “east” < *miθrāsāna- “sunrise” and

μιυροναφρανο, μιυροναφανο and other spellings, “west” < *miθra-nifrāna- “sunset”. It pre-sumably has the same reflex also in the Kushan royal title βαγοποορο < *baga-puϑra-, andin /hrēy/ “three”, as in υρηιδ̣οσοφορσο “three and forty”, from * ϑrāyah-, in an unpublished

Bactrian inscription from the Sasanian period3, alongside later forms with epenthetic vowelsuch as υαρηιο “three” and υιρδδιγο “third”.

As is by now well known, λ is the regular Bactrian reflex of Iranian d , presumably viaδ. This sound shift affects Iranian d in all positions except in the clusters νδ and ζδ4. It alsoaffects early loan words like λιβο “document, copy, text” < OP dipī ̆- < Late Elamite tippi <Middle Elamite tu

2 < Akkadian tuppu (ṭuppu) < Sumerian dub5; also the cognate λαβιρο

“scribe” from the OP antecedent of MP dibīr , and μολρογο, μολραγο, (later: μοδδρογο,μοδδραγο,) “sealed document” < Old Persian *muδrak - < *muδra- “seal”, literally “theEgyptian thing” (i.e., the Egyptian-type signet ring, as opposed to the Babylonian-type cylin-der seal) < Akkadian Muzur “Egypt”6, with the specifically OP shift of z > δ. Likewise λιστο“hand” < *δasta- (if this is in fact a loan word from OP rather than dissimilated from * zasta-).But it does not affect later (post-Achaemenid) loan words like διναρο “dinar” < Gk. δηνάριον< Lat. denarius, or Indian borrowings like βοδδο < buddha-, or δηβο < deva-. Nor does it af-fect the day name δινο, δδινο < *dayanā-. We know that the Zoroastrian day names were inuse in Bactria in the late Achaemenid period, as this very name occurs as dyn in an Aramaictext from Bactria dated to year 2 of an unspecified king (in my opinion Artaxerxes III, whichwould put the document in 356 BC7). This suggests that the d > δ shift took place in the early

Iranian d remains after n, for example in κανδογοληρο “keeper of thegranary” < *kanduk - + dāraya-. d becomes l also in the group dw > λβ as in αλβαρο, αλοβαρο “court”< *dwar-a- (like Yidga and Munji ləvor ; otherwise nowhere). In late Bactrian texts λρ regularly shifts(back) to /dr /, normally written δδρ (cf. μοδδραγο, μοδδρογο later in this paragraph), and likewise ρλusually shifts (back) to /rd /, as in * sard - “year” > * sarl (in παρασαρλο “last year”) > late Bactrianσαρδο. The d > δ > l shift does not, of course, affect the Bactrian d that derives from Iranian post-vocalic t , nor the Bactrian d in the clusters βδ < ft and γδ < xt , as in ταβδο, ταβαδο “sealed” < *tafta-,or λριγδο “held” < *dṛxta-.

Achaemenid period, after the importation of the Persian words for “inscription”, “scribe” and“seal(ed document)”, but before the borrowing (from Old Persian or Avestan) of the Zoroas-trian day names, in any case before the time of Artaxerxes III.

In the Avestan text Vendidad 1, 6–7, the name of the land Bactria occurs twice in the formbāxδī -, both times as acc. sing. bāxδīm(ča). This is not a regular Avestan reflex of *bāxϑri-, andit has been proposed (faute de mieux) that it is one of the “Arachosian” forms which somehowfound their way into the Avesta8. I would suggest that it is actually (Old) Bactrian. It illustratesthe middle step of the specifically Bactrian shift of post-consonantal ϑr > δ > l , predating theAchaemenid-period shift of δ > l , and predating also the general Eastern Iranian shift of b > β .bāxδī - is thus the native name for Bactria, presumably still during the early Achaemenid period.

On this basis we can propose for early Bactrian three chronologically successive soundshifts:

(1) Iranian ϑr becomes δ in post-consonantal position only(2) Iranian b, d , g become β , δ, γ (except in some clusters)(3) δ (of whatever origin) becomes l The Avestan form bāxδī - belongs to the stage where only the first of these shifts has been

completed.An ethnonym bálhika-, variant bahlika- occurs in the Atharvaveda; later Indian texts

have also bāhlīka-9. Although there is historically and geographically an attraction in con-necting these with Bactria, our observation that the shift of δ to l did not take place until theAchaemenid period at the earliest poses a difficulty at last as far as the Vedic forms (and in particular the suspiciously modern looking bálhika-) are concerned. This material needs to

be looked at again by a specialist in Vedic studies.In the Middle Persian zand to Vendidad 1, 6–7 bāxδī - is rendered as bʼḥl , and this spellingis found also elsewhere in Zoroastrian Middle Persian10. This spelling could represent /bāxl /,with long /ā/ (as in Avestan and Old Persian), or equally well /baxl /, with short /a/ (like Ar-abic/New Persian Balx), as there are many examples for the plene spelling of /ah/ and /ax/in Pahlavi script11. The initial b could reflect a Western Iranian transformation of the name;/ β / does not in fact occur in initial position in Middle Persian or Parthian. On the other hand,if Middle Persian had borrowed unaltered the presumed Bactrian form / βāxl /, Pahlavi script

would not really have had any other way of spelling this than bʼḥl . It seems to me thereforethat we do not have any really watertight evidence either for the hard /b-/ or for the short /a/ before the Islamic period.

The metathesis of / xl / to /lx/ in the Arabic and New Persian name of the famous city ofBalx has an exact parallel in MP taxl > NP talx “bitter”, and can be compared with MP suxr > NP surx “red”, and with MP wafr > NP barf “snow”. This suggests that Balx is a specifi-cally New Persian form. It occurs, of course, in Arabic texts from long before the emergenceof New Persian as a written language. It is was thus not borrowed from literary New Persian but from the spoken early New Persian which served as lingua Franca in Khurasan and Tran-soxania during the early Islamic period.
