• Electrical short 5 seconds after liftoff, computers tried to shutdown main engines
• Hydrogen leak in engine coolant lines resulted in a slightly early main engine cut-off (underspeed)

– Decomposes and oxidizes in air
– Soluble in water, alcohol
– Insoluble in chloroform, ether
– Oily liquid
– Fishy, ammonia-like odor
– Detectable at 1-10 ppm monomethylhydrazine

– Well absorbed through all routes
– Eyes: irritation, inflammation, swelling, blindness (delayed onset 10 hours)
– Skin: corrosive, penetrating burns
– Lungs: irritation, pulmonary edema
– Liver: hepatic necrosis, toxic hepatitis, death
– Kidneys: proteinuria, acute renal failure
– CNS: seizures, vomiting, behavioral changes
– GI: nausea, vomiting
– Blood: hemolytic anemia, methemoglobinemia

– Pyridoxine: 25 mg/kg IV for seizure prophylaxis

– Eyes: burning and tearing
– Skin: irritation, alkali burns, frostbite
– ENT: irritation, runny nose (400-700 ppm)
– Respiratory: cough, hoarseness, chest pain (2500-6560 ppm - dangerous in 30 minutes), wheezing, pulmonary edema
– Death (5000-10000 ppm - brief exposure)

– Colorless
– Low toxicity
– Very unlikely over exposure

– Respiratory distress, pulmonary edema
– CNS effects have been observed at 4% (inebriation, dizziness, CNS depression, syncope)
– Slight, reversible disturbances in the ECG at concentrations > 6%

– Respiratory support/monitor
– Avoid routine use of catecholamines (Epinephrine) or sympathomimetics, but utilize for situations in cardiac arrest (similar warning for freon)
