Personal Statement

An ambitious, hardworking and responsible individual who has developed excellent customer service and problem-solving skills from present and past employment. In addition, having recently obtained an honours degree in Law and Sociology, has developed analytical and critical thinking skills which would be of great benefit to any workplace. A team player, who will approach any designated task with enthusiasm and diligence.

Employment History

October 2013- Present: (Sales Advisor & Schoolbook Co-ordinator) ABC Books, Drogheda.

I have worked in ABC Books part-time throughout the college year from October 2013 until the completion of my degree in May 2016. During these months, I had a number of responsibilities, including the following:

Key holder. I was entrusted with this responsibility within my first year of employment. At weekends, I was responsible for opening and closing the shop on my own, which involved the balancing of tills and ensuring the premises was securely closed.

Till operation on Merlio software. Ordering books for customers and for general stock. Stock maintenance i.e. re-filling and date-checking the confectionery and soft

drinks section, ensuring gaps in book and stationery sections were filled and reordered if necessary.

In addition to this, for the last three summers I have worked full-time managing schoolbook distribution from the shop. My responsibilities during these periods increased significantly.

Preparation was required before the summer months began to ensure the process of schoolbook ordering and distribution ran smoothly. This required the initial primary and secondary school orders to be made to our centralised schoolbook supplier centre in Galway, using Merlio and Microsoft Office software, namely Excel. Furthermore, the shop had to be re-arranged to

accommodate the volume of stock, both in terms of schoolbooks and stationery required to fulfil customer needs.

Delegation of tasks was another area I had to oversee for these months. While I was primarily responsible for compiling customer orders and stock replenishment, I also addressed customer queries and complaints and was ultimately responsible for any shortcomings or issues that arose. Often it was necessary to assign the task of customer allocations from deliveries to my colleagues while others served people and helped to complete their booklists.

I was also in charge of all paperwork related to schoolbooks, namely invoices, purchase orders and supplier return credits. An organised, instantly accessible filing system was required for transparency and guaranteeing suppliers were paid on time.

Oversaw the establishment of a minimum deposit account system for customers who wished to order schoolbooks and/or stationery not in stock at that time or for a firm sale, non-return book title.

In charge of contacting customers to notify them that their schoolbook orders were completed. A semi-automated web text process was put in place to enable contact to be made as quickly as possible.

Managed the schoolbook overstock returns process at the end of summer, concurrently ran with the acquisition of exam papers and revision aids, which are stocked from late August until early May. This involved contact via email and phone with our supply centre and courier service to ensure rapid and effective collection, as space to hold sizeable overstock was limited in our storeroom.

July 2013- September 2013: (Post Office Clerk) An Post, Dublin 1.

I worked for six weeks as a Post Office Clerk on O’Connell St, Dublin. My responsibilities here were as follows:

Addressed customer queries, in the form of memorandums and emails. Sorted internal mail and outgoing mail to district offices. Operated a computer system, making extensive use of Microsoft Office

applications, in particular Microsoft Excel. In addition, I quickly mastered the TV Licence Pathworks database.

Was also responsible for processing information regarding inspection reports and licence renewal options. This work required absolute accuracy as the reports led to court appearance orders and prosecutions.
