Holidays
I would like to wish all families a relaxing and happy holiday.
All of our students will have a very busy time in Term 3 and
I hope that they are well rested in preparation. Please note
that our students resume for Term 3 on Monday 15 July.
Confraternity Rugby League and QISSSN Netball Once again, this July holidays, students from the College will be competing in the Confraternity Rugby League and QISSSN Netball competitions. We wish the players, coaches and support staff a safe, fun and successful week. Everybody has a gift they can share with the world. Some are great leaders, others are good workers. Some are parents who mould us as we grow and some give their talents to serving God. Some are musicians who bring joy through music; others are athletes who instil passion through their performances. Good luck to both teams! I am looking forward to seeing our talented teams play in Bundaberg.
Reports and Parent Teacher Night
Our staff will be marking over the holiday break and preparing reports to be
uploaded to Parent Lounge in the second week of Term 3. Parent teacher night is
Thursday 1 August and bookings for interviews with teachers will also be done via
Parent Lounge.

August and this year will focus on the theme: Many Voices. One Spirit. Catholic
Education Week is an opportunity for all Catholic schools to celebrate and promote

Diocesan Ministry Appeal On the weekend of 13 and 14 July, the Diocese will be launching the Diocesan Ministry Appeal. This will
be an opportunity for the people of our Diocese to contribute to various ministries that support those
in need or on the margins.
One area that will benefit from the Appeal is the Western Pastoral Ministry, which provides a much-
needed connection to those living in the rural and remote parts of our Diocese. Sr Mary Farrelly
conducts this ministry by assisting in the preparation of Sacraments, travelling vast distances to visit families and keeping
in regular communication with people in outback areas.
An invitation is extended to all Year 12 parents/guardians to attend a Parent Dinner which will take place after the Year

Reflection
The State of Origin series is an important event for rugby league fans in Queensland and New South
Wales. Not only is the series about bringing together Australians for great games of football, it also
brings people together to create a sense of group identity. It is inevitable that there is good-natured
banter between the two groups of followers, but it is important to recognise the benefits of
belonging to a group.
From a religious point of view, I cannot help but notice that there are thirteen positions in a Rugby
League team, and that Jesus and the disciples also number thirteen. So if Jesus and the
Disciples made up a Rugby League team, what position would Jesus play?
Halfback – He guides the team around the field controlling the play?
Front row – Leading from the front, heading straight into the opposition without fear?
Fullback – Creating miracles, as he makes unbelievable try saving tackles?
One thing I do know from experience, is that he would be a terrible Rugby League coach. With all those parables and
stories, there is no way that the average rugby league player, especially the forwards, would understand what he was
talking about. On the bright side, he would be able to sort out any injuries then and there.
Despite all the fun and enjoyment around the games, it is important to remember what is important. Coming together as
a community is good for everybody, and whilst it is good to win, should your team lose, good manners are important. It
is only a rugby league game, there will be another series next year. Living a life worth living is more important.
I do not know what position Jesus would play, but I do know what team he cheers for. Queenslander! Readings at Mass, Sunday 30th June 2019 – Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading, 1 Kings 19:16, 19-21 …. Elisha rose and following Elijah and became his servant. Psalm 15:1-11, You are my inheritance, O Lord. Second Reading, Galatians 5:1, 13-18 …. My brothers, you were called to freedom. Gospel, Luke 9:51-62 … Jesus resolutely set his face towards Jerusalem. I will follow you wherever you will go.

This Month on SchoolTV - Positive Parenting
Despite the best efforts of parents around the world, the reality is, there is no such thing as the
‘perfect parent’. However, arming yourself with the right information is a good start!
Research shows, that one of the most important protective factors in the lives of young people, is
a close relationship with a supportive adult. With the mental health of today’s young people being
at an all-time low, it is simply not enough to parent effectively. Parents need to familiarise
themselves with practical skills, knowledge and strategies when it comes to raising children.
Many parents today are over-protective, resulting in children being less independent, unable to problem-solve or self-
regulate. Parents are failing to set clear boundaries, which is unfortunately making kids feel less secure. There is too
much pressure on kids today. Parents fill their days with too many activities, in an effort to avoid their child’s boredom.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will learn what is the best approach for
primary and secondary school aged children. We hope you take time to reflect
on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome
your feedback. If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child,
please contact the school for further information or seek medical or
professional help. Here is the link to this month's edition.

Learning Management System
The Learning Management System (LMS) is being trialled by Mr Geoghegan, Mr Mortimer, Mrs Agius and Mrs McLeod
for Year 11 classes during Unit 2. The system enables you to view assessment items, due dates and the grades received
for each piece through Student Cafe and Parent Lounge. The system also enables teachers to indicate immediately, if
drafts or actual assignments have not been submitted.
Parents must be able to log onto Parent Lounge to engage with the LMS. If you have forgotten your login details for
Parent Lounge, your user name will be the same as the number listed on your college fee account. Passwords can be
reset through the link on the College website. This is a perfect opportunity for parents to keep track of student
assessment and achievement.

The College is offering Year 12 students the opportunity to purchase a memento jersey which will be

on the corner of Sydney and Alfred Streets.
Orders are required to be placed in the
Uniforms Solutions store, where sizing

view. Full payment must be made at the time of ordering and
students must nominate a nickname/name, which will be
printed on the back of the jersey. Please ensure that these
nicknames are suitable.

close on Friday 26 July. Ordered jerseys will be available for
pick up from the College late in Term 3 or early in Term 4.
Four teams entered the Mackay and District Secondary Netball competition this year. The First VII,
Netball Blue, Netball Red and Netball White teams played well throughout the season and enjoyed
good games.
The St Patrick’s College Netball Red Team played very well in their grand final against North Mackay State High School. The girls were gracious in defeat with the final score being 11–19. Meanwhile, the St Patrick’s College First VII defeated Mercy College in the Division A grand final. The girls had been undefeated all season, but the game was a nail biter with a final score of 26-23. Well done teams! Congratulations to all the girls participating in the competition this year. Thank you to the coaches for their commitment to their teams.
Division 1 Rugby League Grand Final
It was a very cold Wednesday night, but that didn’t stop the St Patricks College Rugby League team
from putting together one of their best performances of the year. The team played well in the Grand
Final, securing the Terry Hayes Shield for the third year in a row. They defeated a very committed
Mackay State High School Team with a final score of 20-8.
Page | 6
The Mackay State High School team got off to a great start, scoring out wide early to put themselves ahead 4 – 0. The St
Pat’s boys stuck to their game plan and held onto the ball, with Toby Thorburn scoring two tries from dummy half to go
into the break leading 10 – 4.
The second half started fast and furious, with St Pats scoring first. Mackay High team fired back after some poor discipline
from the Pat’s boys, which cost the team field position and another four points, making the score 14 – 8. The games was
very evenly poised until once again, Toby Thorburn broke the game open with his fourth try, giving the Pats boys a 20 – 8
lead with about five minutes to go. St Pat’s were able to hang on to win a very exciting game. Toby Thorburn with his
four try effort was named Man of the Match with Bailey Black, Jack Howard and Tait Poli also playing well.
Confraternity Shield and QISSN
I would like to wish both the 2019 QISSN and Confraternity Carnival teams all the best in their upcoming competitions
during the first week of the school holidays. Both teams have been preparing hard and are looking forward to a tough
and fun week of competition. Both carnivals are being held in Bundaberg, with Shalom College hosting the competitions.
Both teams are coming off wins in their last start in Mackay, so hopefully they can take their winning confidence into the
carnival. Good luck to both teams and a massive thank you to all the coaching staff, parents and students for all your
support leading up to these competitions.
If you are interested in following the teams, both competitions have an App that can be downloaded, that includes the
draw and live score updates during the competition (QISSRL for the rugby league and QISSN for the netball). The App is
available from Apple and Android stores.

Athletics Carnival
On Thursday 13 June, the St Patrick’s Athletics Carnival was held at the newly opened athletics facility at the Mackay
Athletics and Recreation Centre (MARC) and what a fantastic facility this is. It was great to see so many students dressed-
up in their costumes, ready to participate and try to win the trophy for their house.
Mackay really turned on the weather for a fantastic day of competition. Each house was keen to raise the trophy at the
end of the day, with both Chisholm (Year 12 Girls) and Colin (Year 12 Boys) wanting to win their last house event for
school. It was a tough day of competition with lots of close events and races, but there can be only one winner.
Colin were the eventual winners with Rice (Year 11 Boys) coming second. In third position was Chisholm (Year 12 Giels)
and finishing fourth was McAuley (Year 11 Girls).
Final house totals were:
Congratulations to all students who attended the carnival and participated.
The St Patrick’s College staff worked extremely hard throughout the day.
They ensured the students were given plenty of opportunities to participate
and this enabled all events to be run on the day.
If students came first or second in an event, they have been selected to
represent St Patrick’s College at the Interschool Athletics carnival at the
Mackay Athletics and Recreation Centre (MARC). It would be great to see
all of the winners attend this event and represent the College.

BBQ Cleanup- June 2019 Members of the St Patrick’s College community undertook a clean-up of in and around the College for the second time this year. It was a great opportunity for students to work together to the benefit of the local environment and community. Students were surprised by the amount of rubbish that was found in the gutters and gardens of the Mackay CBD, in particular the amount of cigarette butts, cans and bottles. This cleanup was another endeavour undertaken by the Reef Guardians group in order to reduce the impact that humans have on the local environment.

Bridie Fenech and Danielle Burgess for their recent involvement in the CQU School Business

Young Australians leading Global Change - Mackay Conference
This two day non-residential event will host workshops designed to improve diplomacy and
leadership skills, and activities designed to encourage thought-provoking discussion about
global issues, diplomacy, and international relations.
The theme of this conference is 'Unheard Voices'. Over the course of two days, students will
hear from marginalized voices, and investigate the ways we can better represent our rights in
society.
In combination with this, delegates will be given the opportunity to compete in The Evatt Trophy Competition, UN Youth
Australia’s nation-wide Model United Nations Competition that places students (in teams of two from the same school)
in the position of the countries on the United Nations Security Council to debate current pressing issues to global peace
and security.
Evatt is designed for students with varying interests, experiences, and abilities. No previous knowledge of international
affairs, or MUN debating, is necessary.
