As a College we would like to assist all students to obtain

and wear correct uniform. If you are currently having

difficulty sourcing correct uniform for any particular rea-

son, please speak with us in the College Office. There are

many items of second-hand uniform (in very good condi-

tion) that are available for purchase at the college and our

Parent Association also have a great deal of new uniform

items at the moment.

For those that are uncertain of College uniform require-

ments, our Parent Association will have a specific feature

on correct College uniform in the first edition of this

newsletter next term. Canteen Shortfalls & Change We've recently noticed an increase in shortfalls for can-teen lunch orders and also the amount of change not being collected. As some community members may be aware, there are quite a few days where the canteen is operated by only one person and to ensure their time is best spent on providing you with good quality food, we ask that you could double check you've included the correct money with each order. For those requiring change, it is best col-lected on the day of the order during recess or lunch time, if possible to avoid confusion, alternatively if families can provide correct money where possible, that would be great.

College Annual Implementation Plan I recently included a copy of our College’s 2016 – 2019 SSP (School Strategic Plan) for the wider College Com-munity to view, in order for the strategic direction of the College to be open and transparent to all, and very shortly I will be able to share our 2017 AIP (Annual Implementa-tion Plan). Basically, a school’s SSP provides the intend-ed strategic direction of a College over a 4 year period, with the AIP breaking this down further into a document that outlines the direction for a 12 month period.

Our SEIL (Senior Education Improvement Leader) Mr

Damien Jenkyn will meet with me next Tuesday to pro-

vide feedback and advice on the 2017 AIP and a final sign

-off will take place shortly after.

Congratulations Mrs Twigg I would like extend my congratulations to Mrs Wendy Twigg, who was the successful applicant for our recently advertised Humanities teaching position and also our Wellbeing Co-ordinator role in 2017. Mrs Twigg has been acting in these roles at the beginning of 2017 and we are

most excited to have her continue with us for the remain-der of the year. College Photos – 29th March A reminder is extended to all in regards to our College photo’s which are to take place next Wednesday 29th March. Please ensure that all student envelopes are re-turned to the College (not one per family) by Monday 27th March with money enclosed.

This year, families with 3 or more students at school will

also receive a free family photo.

Please speak to the College Office for further details if

required.

RELAY FOR LIFE BENDIGO Tomorrow night will see some of our students participat-ing in the Relay for Life in Bendigo at the Flora Hill ath-letics track, raising money for the Cancer Council. The relay commences at 6.30 p.m. going through the night until 3.00 p.m. on Saturday. The team is expecting to have at least 2 members on the track for the duration of the event. Wishing the following students all the best in their en-

deavours in what is a very moving experience, Caitlyn H,

Chaplaincy Committee – Helpers For Bunnings BBQ Required The College Chaplaincy Committee will hold a fundraiser on Saturday April 29th in the form of a sausage sizzle at Epsom Bunnings. This fundraiser will assist in gaining much needed funds for a very worthy committee, made up of a dedicated group of local community members. We currently need approx. 4-6 more volunteers to assist with the cooking of our sausages on the day. If you are able to assist for a couple of hours on the day, please make con-tact with the College Office or Mrs Hilary Thomas so that we can provide more details. Hope you have a great week!

Assistant Principal’s News

Hooray, footy season is back. No more ‘I’m a celebrity get me out of here’ no more ‘Married at first sight’ no

more ‘Biggest Loser’, (unless you are a Richmond supporter), it’s just footy footy footy from here on until the start

of Term 4.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of accompanying the Year 6’s with Mrs Muller and

Mrs Phillips to the Big Smoke. ‘Ohhhhh Melbourne, how I miss your traffic

so….no one ever said’. First stop was Scienceworks in Spotswood. As usual

this was awesome and if you’re looking for something educational, but disguised

as fun, this is a good day out for the family. I found out that my reaction time

was excellent but my balance was terrible. This might explain why it always

looks like I’m about to fall over, but I never do. Weekends especially! From

there we went to the Old Treasury Building. This is where they used to keep all

the gold during the gold rush, before it was shipped back to England where it

rightfully belonged? I found out that there used to be a waterfall along the Yarra, just behind Flinders St Station.

Upstream from the falls was fresh water, downstream was saltwater. At the time of white settlement, it was a great

idea to blow up the falls and less than 200 years later we have the beautiful brown Yarra river that we all adore.

They weren’t all bad though, they reserved a space for a racetrack at Flemington and a Cricket ground at Jollimont.

After the Treasury we went to Parliament. How’s this, we had afternoon tea with Jacinta Allan in one of the posh

tea rooms upstairs. They had huge cookies and OJ laid out for us, all courtesy of the Minister. Finally our taxpayer

dollars are being spent wisely. Minister Allan then took us to the Queens Hall, where by chance the Premier of

Victoria, Daniel Andrews was walking by. He stopped and talked to our kids for about 15 minutes. Regardless of

your political persuasion, it was an unforgettable afternoon and we felt privileged that two of our elected reps

would spend so much time with us. Other school groups looked jealous, which also felt good. Our run of good

fortune ended when two kids got crook and Mrs Phillips and I had the mandatory clean up duties. Mrs Muller did

an ‘Amazing Cossimo’ act, and disappeared. That smell….also unforgettable.

Parent tTeacher Student Interviews are to be held on the first week of Term 2 on Wednesday 19th April. Next

week when Interim reports are distributed, you will be given times for your allotted interview. These will be based

on last year’s times and are changeable. You will be allotted a time with two of your children’s teachers (if Year 7-

12) and main class teacher/s (if Prep-Year 6). Please wait until interim reports and interview times are allocated

and then, if you wish to see other staff or change interview times, this can be arranged. This is a really good time to

get to know where your child is ‘at’ and also to discuss any concerns that you may have, or just to find out what’s

coming up next and how you may assist.

See you all next week at the Cross Country

WORLD SALT AWARENESS WEEK 2017

75% of the salt we eat is hidden in the food we buy. Check the

label and switch to less salt! This is particularly important when

thinking about what you put in your child’s lunch box.

Many of us are consuming around eight or nine times more salt (sodium) than we should largely because it ’s

hidden in many of the foods we eat. A whopping two thirds of salt comes from processed foods. Too much salt can lead to high blood pressure, which puts us at risk of

stroke, heart disease and chronic kidney disease.

How much is too much?

We need sodium to regulate fluids in our body – most of us can get it naturally in our diet without it being added.

We only need a small amount each day but many of us are eating way more. Adults should eat less than 2300 mg (or 5 g) of sodium – about a teaspoon of salt a day. Children

need less than one quarter of a teaspoon of salt per day. The adequate intake of sodium for children starts at

around 0.5 g salt (1 -3 year olds) to 1 g salt (9–13 year olds).

For some simple tips on how to cut down on your salt intake go to the Better Health Channel, www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au

Cross Country

This coming Thursday our students will be running in their

Cross Country. We hope that as many parents as possible are there to support their children, but understand that this

is not always possible. Uniform Thank You

We extend our thanks to all the families who day after day

ensure their children meet the Uniform Code established

by Parents’ Association and College Council. There will be

times when your child may be out of uniform for a day due

to unavoidable circumstances but please remember to send

a note to your child’s teacher so that a temporary exemp-

tion can be granted.

Literacy Hint-

Poetry is a rich source of language which makes us think

about rhyme and structure while developing rich visual

language. Think about reading some poetry to your chil-

dren as a bedtime activity from time to time. There are

some tremendous poems for children available on the inter-

net.

Kettlebells: Gold Medallist from The Arnold Classic

Georgia W competed in the 16kg long cycle event for 30

minutes. She completed 257 repetitions, which is a PB and won Georgia a gold medal. Georgia’s highlight was meet-

ing and lifting in front of Arnold Schwarzenegger and being told by the man himself that she is ‘awesome’! Ac-

cording to Georgia she also featured on his Snapchat. Well done to our very own home grown hero.

Year 6 Excursion

What a great day we had in Melbourne yesterday. Sci-enceworks was great fun and our visit to the Lightning Room was very interesting and linked nicely with our electricity and circuits topic in Science. We also learnt what happens to things when they get cold and then heat up again. At the Old Treasury Building we were able to see what Melbourne looked like in the 1860s and compare that to what it looks like now. It was great to see so many of the beautiful old buildings still around today. Our final stop for the day was Parliament House where we were hosted for afternoon tea by Jacinta Allan MP and had the most AMAZING cookies. While in the Queen’s Hall for photos and questions, we were extremely fortunate to have the State Premier, Daniel Andrews, stop and talk with our students before posing for a group photo. So many won-derful experiences for all the students who attended, and some terrific questions asked at each of our stops. Many thanks to Mr. Scott Wilkinson and Mrs. Therese Phillips for helping make the day such a success!

School Uniform

Dear parents, please help us to have students in full

school uniform. If you need assistance with purchasing

school uniform please contact the College and speak to

ing your child to wear school uniform I happy to assist.

At present students are being ‘gently’ reminded to please

present to school in the correct uniform.

Year 9 & 10 Canoe Camp

Thank you to Mr Wilkinson and Mrs McNamara who

participated in our recent Canoe Camp. Thanks also to

my folks who were able to leave their beloved cattle for

the day and travel to Echuca to move the bus for us on

Friday. We had perfect weather for day 1, with plenty of

sunshine and swimming weather. So of course we took

the opportunity to have a swim at the Barmah Lakes

(where we camped for our first night). Below is some

feedback from our students.

The best part about Canoe Camp was;

Canoeing & swimming Macey M

Going home Jack S

The independent camping, living opportunity Lydia

M

The camping and swimming Stephen V

Camping and swimming Rylee G

The camping and being with my mates Tom A

The camping Zac C

Camping, swimming and eating good food Nathan D

Catching a fish and a shrimp (aka Jerry) Aaron L.

The worst part about Canoe camp was things like sleep-

ing, sitting in the canoe for ages, packing up equipment,

the packed bus, but even with all these obstacles students

had to overcome, they still reported during period 6 on

Monday, they would go on the camp again.

Debutante Ball

The Deb Ball hype, craze is busy building. I am looking

forward to seeing our students in their formal attire and

ball dresses on the night. Please come along and support

the evening, it is a fantastic event for the College and a

great opportunity to see our Senior School students at

their best.

Cross Country

Good luck to all participants in the P-12 College Cross

Country happening next week.

Thanks for your time,

Sarah Byrne Senior-Sub School Leader Year 10 English: Please note all Issues Oral Presentations are due next week. No exceptions. Parents please support your chil-dren in this. Thanks Hayley Lethlean Courage to Care Yesterday the Year 9 and 10 classes took part in a pro-gram called ‘Courage to Care’ at St Killian’s Hall in Ben-digo. We learned about significant events in history where there were many bystanders. We also learned about some ‘upstanders’ who dramatically changed the outcome of the lives of others. Peter, a survivor of the Holocaust shared his story about how his Jewish family were able to avoid the Nazis for three years because of the kindness of many individuals. They hid in basements, slept with animals in a barn and eventually had to hide in a hole “which could best be de-scribed as the size of a grave”. They eventually had to turn themselves in because Peter (who was 8 by this time) became ill from hiding in the hole, ankle deep in icy win-ter water and needed care which they hoped the Nazis could provide. Peter talked about the deep gratitude he felt for his rescuers and how each of us can stop bad things from happening by being ‘upstanders’.

The students commented on how moving the stories were, and how they admired the courage of the survivors and rescuers. We will be following up on these topics next Term in both Humanities and English classes.

I’d like to say thank you to Mrs Lethlean and Mr Smeelie for attending the day with us, and to Henry for driving the bus. It was a great opportunity and I think we all gained some valuable insights from the day.
