Sports Fields and Car Park Redevelopment

Over the weekend the basketball posts were installed – much to the delight of the students and staff. I am hoping by the

time the newsletter is released the fence is installed and then this major project will be completed except for some new

signage. Fingers crossed that all is completed within the next week or so.

2013 School Fees

I would like to once again thank those families who have already settled their 2013 school account and remind those who

are yet to do so that if they are settled by the final school day of the year you will receive a $10 discount. We would really

like to have as many accounts as possible paid by this date so families will be able to collect their book bags and commence

labelling and covering the contents. A reminder that accounts can also be paid on Tuesday 29th

January which is when

Book Bags can also be collected and the uniform shop will be open from 10 am to 3 pm.

2013 Student Leaders

Best wishes to all of the current Year 5 students

who have nominated for the various Student

Leadership positions for 2013. Last week all of the

children heard speeches from Mahek, Yi Juan,

Senisa, Senudi, Izza, Simran, Heshan, Srijay,

Lahiru, Rajat and Kimal as to why they should be

elected as one of the School Captains. Their

outstanding speeches were conducted at our school

assembly which can be quite a daunting task. All

of the children are a real credit to themselves, their

families and teachers. This was followed by all of

the students having the opportunity to vote for a

candidate. We were once again very fortunate to

have a representative from the Australian Electoral

Commission (Peter) who oversaw the voting

process and was assisted by our current Year 6

leaders.

This week the children have also had the

opportunity to nominate and present for the other

leadership positions throughout our school.

I would also like to acknowledge the wonderful

work of the staff with this process and Ms Dale

who is overseeing the election process. Well done

and best wishes everyone!

Thank you to the De Silva Family

Our school is very fortunate to have so many

families who support us in numerous was. A recent

example is the very generous offer from the De

Silva family who donated a special book for our

school library. Dulwan (Year 2) participated in the

“Write For Fun” program which involves children

writing stories which are then published. Dulwan

wrote a wonderful story titled “The Teacher and

the Thief” which was published (and is also in the

Kids Corner section). Dulwan’s family then

decided to purchase 2 copies of the book – one for

the family and the other for our school. A sincere

thank you to Dulwan’s parents Don and Sasiri for

your very generous offer and for supporting our

school!

From The Table to The Farm Program

Last Wednesday Ms Rich and Year 6 students Sarah, Jeremy and Jesse attended an informative and very

interesting day where they represented our school in the above program – refer to Ms Rich’s report. The

feedback outlined that the children were simply amazing as they worked harmoniously and industriously in

order to solve a variety of complex problems – all with minimal fuss. Ms Rich commented on how proud she

was of all of them – well done and thank you Sarah, Jeremy and Jesse for representing our school so well, you

should be really proud of yourselves! Also thank you to the Year 6 classes who spent numerous hours

completing the enormous banner, Ms Rich for her organisation and Mirini (Jesse’s mother) for attending the

event and supporting the children.

Enrolments

Once again, I would like to remind families with children who will be beginning school in 2013 that enrolments

are closing rapidly with only a very small number of positions available as places are filling fast. Hence I

strongly encourage you to ensure you return your child’s enrolment form to Jenny or Pam as soon as possible.

We also ask that members of our school community assist us by informing any of their neighbours of the

enrolment procedures and direct them to the office to collect an enrolment form or our school website –

www.glenps.vic.edu.au . School tours are available every Tuesday morning commencing at 9:30 and also upon

request. Please call the school on 9802 9938 to book a tour.

We are currently preparing for the 2013 school year and would really like your assistance in providing us with

as much information as possible regarding your intentions for next year. If you believe you will not be

returning to Glen Waverley for the 2013 school year could you please write me a short note indicating so.

As I am sure you would understand, we need to commence the process of selecting staff and allocate students

to classes – your cooperation with this issue is greatly appreciated.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT (Cont’d) Writer’s Club Author Visit

Last Thursday the children in the Writer’s Club were very fortunate to spend a few hours with renowned author Mark

privilege to present a large number of awards to various Glen Waverley Primary School students who are

performing well above the expected standard. As a learning community we highly value the Kumon program

and thoroughly recommend it to all families. Attached are a few photos of the evening and if anyone would

Year Book Front Cover Competition Winners

This year the students from grade 5 and 6 were invited to create the front cover for the Glen Waverley

Primary School Year Book. The competition was hot with many entries being of a very high calibre,

but there could only be one winner, or perhaps not. In fact there were 3 winners as 3 students

contributed to create the 1 winning cover. And the winners are…… Angie from 6ND, Dinara from

6ND and Wendy from 6RL. They combined to produce a Year Book cover of exceptional artistic and

conceptual quality. They included many different elements that represent their view of GWPS. Some of

these elements were a branch representing growth, a girl representing learning, people around the sun

representing togetherness and the wind representing peace. I would like to thank all the other students

who entered the competition. Their artworks were greatly appreciated.

EMA - 2013

Education Maintenance Allowance - information for parents currently receiving EMA

Changes to the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) for 2013:

The EMA continues to help families on lower incomes with financial assistance to cover the cost of educational expenses including textbooks, stationery, uniforms and excursions for their child up until the age of 16.

From 2013, the Victorian Government is restructuring the EMA to better target financial support to families on lower incomes. Payments made direct to parents will be increased for eligible recipients at all year levels up to age 16, with an additional increase for parents with students in Years Prep and 7 in recognition of the additional costs at these transition points.

In 2013 the annual EMA payment for families with children in primary school (years 1-6) will receive a payment of $150. Families with children in secondary school (Year 8 up until the age of 16) will receive $250.

The School Start Bonus which was previously received by EMA families has been discontinued as a separate payment from 2013 and added to the EMA. As a result, parents of children in Prep and Year 7 will receive boosted EMA payments of $200 and $300 respectively in those years.

From 2013, schools will no longer receive EMA payments on behalf of parents. However, $62 million over four years will be redirected to the State’s most needy schools to assist families on lower incomes. These funds will form part of the school Student Resource Packages to be allocated at the local level.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the EMA in 2013, you must:

be either a parent or guardian of a primary or secondary school student up to the age of sixteen; and

be an eligible beneficiary of a Centrelink pension, allowance or benefit within the meaning of the State Concessions Act 2004* or be a Veterans Affairs (TPI) pensioner or be a temporary foster parent.

* i.e – the parent/guardian must be the holder of a valid Health Care Card or valid Pension Card.

The eligibility criteria must be met as at 29 January 2013 (Instalment One) and 15 July 2013 (Instalment Two).

The EMA application form must be submitted to the school by 28 February 2013.

Payment Amounts - 2013:

Prep Years 1 - 6 Year 7 Year 8 – Age 16

Instalment One $140 $105 $210 $175

Instalment Two $60 $45 $90 $75

Annual Total $200 $150 $300 $250

Your EMA will be paid by direct deposit into your nominated bank account.

Contact: School Office for an EMA application form and to lodge your application.

This fortnight’s Kids Corner section contains some amazing stories written by Vanessa and Justin

(both in Prep LG) and Dulwan (2SY).

Spring (By Vanessa – Prep LG)

In Spring we play outside because

it is warmer.

The bees like the flowers because

it is Spring.

In Spring we can go to the park

and have a picnic.

Big Chimp and Baby Chimp (By Justin – Prep LG)

Baby Chimp and Big Chimp went to get some honey from the tree and Baby

Chimp hid behind the tree.

Dad Chimp bought some honey for Baby Chimp at the tree.

Baby Chimp said, “Can I have some more honey?”

Then Dad Chimp went to get more honey from the tree again.

Baby Chimp then fell asleep.

Dad Chimp carried Baby Chimp on his back.

Then Dad Chimp caught the bees so they could have honey every day.

The next day she was looking for important papers and she heard the noise again. She got scared, ran away and went

home. She thought something must be done. So the teacher had a good idea. The idea was to make paper frogs to

scare it away. The very next morning the teacher saw all of the frogs were gone and there were three ninja stars left.

She complained to the principal and said something must be done! But the Principal said, “Don’t be silly!” in an

angry voice and the teacher went home and made a clever robot ant. The next day the teacher placed the ant and hid a

camera in it. Then the ant saw what happened! At night time the teacher watched the video and said, “There’s a

robber at the school!”

The next day the teacher said, “I am going to solve this mystery.”

The first thing that she did was go and ask the kid if they want to save the school. The kids said YES! The teacher

said, “The thief lives in the basement.”

The kids made a circle around the basement. Then the teacher said, “Too late, you are caught, come out now!”

Then the robber came out and the robber was caught by the Police. After that the teacher went and showed the

principal what happened.

So the problem was solved. The teacher shared the story with her other students

and said, “You are the BEST!”

This story is dedicated to my parents, grandparents and all my loving teachers.

The Teacher and the Thief (By Dulwan – 2SY)

On Monday a teacher was looking for a book and

she looked and looked everywhere. Then she heard

a noise and said, “Who is there?” in a terrible voice.

Then she went to look for it. She looked in the

school toilets and the art room, also the staffroom,

but she found nothing. So she went back to work.

Some GWPS students will be performing

during lunchtime on Wednesday the 5th

of

December, 2012.

It will be held from 1:40pm – 2:30pm on the

Music room stage if it is sunny, or in the Hall

if it is wet weather.

You are welcome to come and watch! If you

are coming, make sure you sign in and out at

the school office before and after the concert.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Mark Carthew

On the 15th November 2012, well known author Mark Carthew visited Glen Waverley

Primary School. This was a great opportunity for the students in the Writer’s Club to

hear from a professional author. It was really exciting. During his speech he

generally spoke about his books and we were told how he was inspired to write books.

Mark recited some poetry and played his guitar, singing songs from his books. We

were given the chance to do lots of fun activities. At the end we each got two book

marks. Mark Carthew’s visit was a great experience. On behalf of the Writer’s Club

we would like to thank Kay, Ms Javidi, Mrs Yerramilli, Mr Catalano and the staff for

providing us with this great opportunity. I hope all of the students will be inspired by

people like Mark Carthew.

The Digital Excellence Program (DEA) is an online program to assist and extend students’ ICT skills. Our students monitor and drive their own learning through this program which is integrated into all aspect of their learning. Once they have completed tasks they receive a digital excellence badge to keep forever. The program offers them the opportunity to further their skills from home by logging on to the DEA website. This can be accessed via Glen Waverley Primary School’s website. Achievements in ICT will be celebrated fortnightly through this newsletter. Here are some students who have achieved badges in the last fortnight.
