Kew Primary School is an amazing learning community made up of

fantastic students, wonderful families and passionate, talented,

hardworking staff. As such we have many families that want to come to

our school to join our learning community. To facilitate this process we

run many school tours for prospective families who want to find out more

about the school. Information about school tours, zones and the

enrolment process can be found on the Kew Primary School website.

This week we continue to focus on the Skill Development stage of the

Learning and Teaching Model Explicit Skill Development looking

specifically at the We DO or Shared stage of the lesson. During this stage

students work collaboratively with the teacher and peers on ways of

better understanding and mastering the presented concept. To achieve

this:

Small groups of students are given opportunity to practise skills

with differentiated tasks.

Students practise the concept or skill through active participation

and discussion.

Teachers facilitate learning by observing, questioning and engaging

students whilst moving around the room.

Our congratulations go to all of the students who recently competed in

the interschool cross country event. Our students demonstrated the Kew

used to fund new play equipment to be located near the oval. Feedback from students, staff and families is also

helping to shape how locally raised funds will be used going forward. This will include (but not be limited to) the

development of the playground outside the junior building, a passive play area behind the library, mobile gardens,

painting and signage. 2020 will also mark the 150th anniversary of Kew Primary School so we are looking at

opportunities at restoring some of the historical features of the school whilst maintaining and building on our

more modern infrastructure. These projects are directly attributable to the hard work of our volunteers and we

thank you for your commitment to our learning community.

Pete deWacht Principal

Schools are dynamic places and Kew Primary is no exception. Staff have been busy working on a number of projects related to best practice in teaching and learning.

Reading has been a focus of our Professional Learning both in-school and in our collegiate group of neighbouring schools. The Curriculum Day next Monday will be run by experts within the school to gain further understanding of teaching practices in reading and best practice in reading assessment.

We also have teachers who have undertaken Professional Learning about the PYP through a two day conference and our specialist teachers worked with our PYP mentor Karen Chaur on planning for PYP in specialist subjects.

There is another group of KPS teachers who have just completed an action research inquiry that will be presented to schools in our region next week.

Teachers learning with teachers, teachers learning with students and students learning with students creates a culture of learning that is important for all.

LOST PROPERTY

Children being children will lose things and at Kew we often have a large quantity of school clothing filling the Lost Property cupboard. A few times a week the clothes are sorted and returned to their owners. The problem is that there are many items of clothing that are unnamed. With more than five hundred students in our school, all wearing similar clothing, this can be a problem. If there is a legible name on your child’s clothes they will be returned.

We had a wonderful book fair at the start of May. We were able to acquire these books (in

the photo) due to your generosity. Thanks for coming.

Recently during lunchtimes we have been Lego Masters, making zines and always chess.

PTA NEWS

Thank you!

What a great start to Term 2 we’ve had. We hope your children had plenty of fun at the school disco. From the feedback and the children’s reactions on the night, it did look like everyone had a blast. The glow hairspray and face paint were a fantastic new addition for the event, the new DJ kept the children entertained the whole time, and the revised sign-out process made things a lot easier. Thank you to the Grade 2 reps Kim Albert, Lisa Nightingale, Silvana Paradiso, Nia Warakaulle and Jen Williams for their super organisational skills!

About 80 mums were at The Terminus for last Friday’s Mother’s Day social event. We had mums from every single year level attend and there were plenty of opportunities for everyone to meet each other and catch up. Thanks to Andrea Herrman for organising the event! This was a great start to the weekend, and I hope our mums and grandmothers loved their presents from the Mother’s Day Stall. Our Grade 4 reps, Manny Cifra, Greg Clement and Cate Thomson did a superb job with selecting and ordering items for the store, and managing the stall on the day - there’s been plenty of feedback about the fantastic items that were available.

We simply cannot run our events and stalls without volunteers so thank you to everyone who signed up and helped.

ELECTION DAY, SATURDAY 18TH MAY

We are so excited about this Saturday! Don’t forget to stay on after you’ve voted to make the most of our sausage sizzle, cake stall and coffee cart. We also have some parents making delicious savoury treats, and the chocolate coin toss game is back. Many of you will be busy baking for the cake stall, and instructions and packaging would have come home in school bags last week.

We do have some spots remaining for help with the sausage sizzle so please sign up: https://volunteersignup.org/PDJCA

UPCOMING EVENTS

We are working on a movie event so please keep an eye out for details. The Grade 1 reps have already booked a venue for the fathers’ social event on 30th August so remember to save the date!

We’re hoping that the Election Day stalls will substantially top up this year’s fundraising efforts. The gaga pit is just the first of a number of items that the Buildings and Grounds team will be bringing to fruition and I’m excited to hear about the projects on the horizon. Thank you to all of you for supporting our fundraising events so far.

See you on Saturday! Belinda PTA President
