Dear customers and friends of our company,

Let me start by thanking you. Thank you for your trust and cooperation over the past year. I would like to thank our long-standing customers for their loyalty and our new customers for choosing us and expressing interest in doing business with us.

Our company celebrated its 25th anniversary on 1 March. For me, this was a good opportunity to look back on our history, albeit briefly, as we have enough to do taking care of day-to-day busi-ness and investing in future sustainability.

Yet, looking all the way back to the day my wife and I began building the company is quite exciting. It was a long period in our lives. Of course, it was a lot of work and filled with ups and downs, but we were lucky; there were more ups than downs. We are very grateful to our customers and partners, our dedica-ted staff who now number over 500 and everyone who has accompanied us on this journey.

In any case, I would like to say a few words about our focus for the future. And there is already a lot to report in this first edition of our company newsletter in 2012. It promises to be an interesting read.

We have installed our fifth Rapida 205 printing press (sheet format 151 x 205 cm) with five colours and a coating unit. It also prints with UV inks, allow-ing us to offer a larger range of services, including in the plastic printing sector.

Furthermore, we have reinvested in the corruga-ted cardboard area. This allows us to produce double-side corrugated board. Everyone who deals with displays is well aware of this need. We also purchased a die cutting machine that is capable of post-processing large sheets from the printing press. It is the first die cutting machine in Europe for corrugated cardboard of this size.

2012 has started off very well and should be another good, successful year where we can continue to work together, despite the difficult business envi-ronment and uncertain times. Therefore I wish you strength, courage and the success you deserve.

Rain poured down heavily as our new die cutting machine arrived by heavy-duty truck. The weather wasn’t ideal, but nevertheless, unloading work went according to plan. Precision mechanical engineering and a great deal of fine judgement were required to manoeuvre the 45-metric tonne die cutting machine to its new location.

And after a few initial logistical challenges, the new fully automated flatbed die cutter successfully joined our existing fleet of machines.

The machine is tasked with post-processing of our printed sheets in 151 x 205 cm format. It will assume the majority of tasks currently handled by the platen die cutting machine and is capable of perforating sheets at faster production speeds and in larger batches.

Complete large format post-processingThe new die cutting machine brings the strategic expansion of the cardboard area to an end. And together with the upgraded corrugated cardboard equipment and two laminating machines for corrugated cardboard and film, it forms the basis for coated post-processing in 151 x 205 cm format.

We have now completed expansions, acquired new equipment and relocated, meaning the end of a process that began in spring 2011. We can now offer you an extended range of products and services for your orders. Silver, Blue and Red – Red Bull, the market leader in energy drinks, expands its range of products. The current poster campaign designed with the distinctive water buffalo logo is a real eye-catcher. But that’s not all. The new posters for the caffeine drink sparkle and twinkle all over, making it look as if the pillars were made of metal. At night, the pillars look like cans of Red Bull under the shimmer of the street lights. This is caused by silver lining sheets that make the entire advertising pillar shine.

Metal meets large formatThe dazzling sheets are a brand new innovation in outdoor advertising. Ellerhold is the only company using metallised poster paper. And it really is something special. To make it, a wafer-thin metal coating is applied to standard poster paper. There is no change to any of the well-known characteristics of poster paper such as its high degree of water resistance.

Trend toward finishing Metallised paper can finally shine brightly and find use beyond the label and decoration segment. Thanks to the dedicated to innovation of our poster specialists in Zimdorf, the metallised paper can be used anywhere and everywhere and it keeps up with the trend towards more specialised, distinctive posters. Indeed, visually unique campaigns are more likely to secure the viewer’s attention.

All good things come in threes: Bayern 3 radio, three presenters and 3D posters. The creative minds at Munich-based ad agency Saint Elmo’s have portrayed the morning show crew in 3D, jetting across the Bavarian countryside like superheroes as part of the radio programme’s current spring campaign.

Our colleagues in Zirndorf received the order to transform the large images into 18-sheet large-format posters. State-of-the-art offset printing machines made the ‘Radio zum Anfassen’ (Radio you can touch) slogan look so realistic you can almost reach out and touch it. The striking effect is being used in several different communication media simultaneously for the first time in Germany. The 3D image can also be seen in giant posters and print and ambient media. The 3D glasses that create the spatial effect were distributed by promotion teams, given away with newspapers or pre-installed in the medium itself.

How does the 3D effect work?The human eye perceives two slightly different images in each eye. The brain then creates a single 3D effect.

This stereoscopic 3D effect requires at least two images taken from two different perspectives.The two resulting half-images are coloured and superimposed in complementary colours. An essential feature of stereo-viewable images is that each eye sees only sees one specific single image. The half-images are separated again when you put on a pair of 3D glasses with the appropriate coloured lenses and each eye receives a different image – just like normal vision. Ant this allows our brain to conjure up a three dimensional image in no time at all.

Create highlights UV print finishing in large format

The addition of a fifth Rapida 205 at the beginning of the year has strengthened the Ellerhold Group. You might ask, what is so special about the Rapida 205? It prints with both offset ink colours and UV inks. It will mainly be used in UV print finishing of displays and packaging as well as in film and plastic printing.

The Rapida 205 not only delivers a high gloss level and striking tactile properties for cardboard products with UV coating, it also provides excellent rub resistance. You can take advantage of the option to immediately post-process printed sheets, a real time-saver when modern production times are often tight. The sheets are already completely dry when they hit the end of the run.

The combination of high-gloss UV coating on matte films produces some interesting optical and tactile properties.

Launch at POSSuccessful launch at the POS Masters trade fair

After a long break, the POS industry once again had its own trade fair in Stuttgart from 2 to 4 February 2012. The Ellerhold Group was one of the exhibitors to present new products, services, innovations and trends.

The launch at POS Masters was very successful for us. Many of the industry’s top decision-makers received information about our company’s range of products and services.

Well-being at the POSNatural beauty on cardboard

At the beginning of this year, we produced a range of versatile advertising media and decorative materials for our long-standing customer – Charlotte Meentzen Kräutervital Kosmetik GmbH. The appealing design is currently being used to advertise the NATUR PUR range of natural cosmetics with DIN A1 posters, floor displays, decorative cubes and counter displays across the retail industry.

We were able to produce all communication tools at Ellerhold thanks to our wide range of products and services. This offers decisive advantages for our customers: Not only do they benefit from a dedicated contact partner during the quotation and order process, they also get shortcuts to printing approval.

History of the brandCharlotte Meentzen was just 26 years old when she founded the ‘Institute for Natural Cosmetics‘ in Dresden. That was in 1930. Soon afterwards, she developed her own facial massage technique known as the ‘Charlotte Meentzen System’ and wrote a book entitled ‘Heilkräuter im Dienst der Schönheit’ (Active Herbal Beauty). It is considered one of the first, if not the very first, standard works in natural cosmetics

Centre of attention at the POSCustom bottle-shaped Kikkoman display

Kikkoman has been brewing their soy sauce according to a traditional Japanese recipe for over 300 years. Kikkoman is a high-quality brand with profound expertise in the production of soy sauce.

In the daily competition to attract customers, new and imaginative ideas are called for again and again when developing new marketing opportunities. Displays and packaging are a crucial indicator when it comes to customer purchasing decisions because they form the final link in the communication chain. And to make sure the company could fulfil this reality, this year Kikkoman, together with the Ellerhold Group, developed an extra-large bottle-shaped display. Its unique shape achieves a long-range effect and awakens the curiosity of customers to take a closer look.

The product carrier has a solid skeletal structure made from double-side corrugated board that can be filled with different types of sauces in retail stores. Customers can purchase the naturally brewed products on three levels in an attractive format.

The machines at the Ellerhold Group cardboard plant in Radebeul hummed furiously to produce these distinctive displays. 18 individual sections were printed, laminated, punched and assembled in order to best stage the soy and seasoning sauces from Kikkoman.

Printing in a jiffy Corrugated plastic posters featuring offset quality

The upcoming state election in North Rhine-Westphalia presents a challenge for the printing industry. Unlike regular election campaigns, this time there is only a small window of time to produce election posters. Our team is working hurriedly on the printing presses and in post-processing in order to deliver the candidates’ posters in time.

Our unique production process was a huge advantage in this respect. The images of the candidates’ faces are whizzing through the printing press in high-quality offset printing. Our laminating and punching machines are also working at maximum capacity.

A report published by British market research consultancy AWA Alexander Watson Associates entitled ‘Global Sleeve Label Market and Technology Review’ predicts that the sleeve label segment will grow between 4.5 and 5 per cent by 2015. The market share of sleeve labels is currently 12 per cent of the entire label segment.

Following this trend, Nordbrand Nordhausen GmbH used this effective and extremely practical form of packaging to wrap its new ‘Peppermint Cream’ liqueur speciality. The full body sleeve label offers you plenty of space to use the entire surface and it also increases the impact of the packaging. The delicate green blends featured on the sleeve labels were produced on our 8-colour variable-format roller offset press.

“The sleeve label business area at the Ellerhold Group distinguishes itself by covering small and medium-sized batches. Thanks to low preprint costs in the printing format area, we are able to react flexibly to customer requests and ongoing adjustments if they arise,” explains Daniel Kinast, Director of Sales at Goetz+Müller GmbH – Etiketten aus Berlin, a subsidiary of Ellerhold.

Converse splashes colourVibrant street art posters

The walls of Germany’s largest cities have been painted, decorated with posters, sprayed and showered with confetti as part of the new ‘Just add colour’ campaign.

Converse commissioned numerous artists across Germany to raise the profile of the cult ‘Chuck Taylor All Star’ shoe, first produced in 1917. Each artist put their own individual touch on shoe with bright colours and large designs. This feast of colour was a real treat for the eyes in dreary surroundings still scarred from the winter.

Billboards in Munich were printed with the basic outline of the design and spray-painted by artists from the region. A lot of these activities were recorded on video. The result is a beautiful gallery that’s been a hit with Chucks® fans and non-fans alike.

‘Giant dress’ made of photographsThe Ellerhold Group cloaks the KKW Krümmel Nuclear Power Plant

Tarpaulins the size of football pitches span the massive KKW Krümmel Nuclear Power Plant. Photographs of everyday life inside the plant decorate the front and a countryside scene adorns the back while construction work is being carried out on the plant. Ellerhold AG in Radebeul printed the giant facade banners.

People walking along the banks of the river Elbe in the village of Tespe in northern Germany stare in amazement at the Krümmel Nuclear Power Plant on the other bank of the river. The decommissioned plant, often called the KKK, has been ‘dressed up’ in new clothes. It‘s no longer coated in the grey colour it sported for so many years. The old walls are now decorated with a giant poster with colourful photographs. The Ellerhold Group’s custom-fit ‘dress’ is 7,000 m² – that’s the same size as the pitch at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. Portraits of hard-working men and women face towards the Elbe, while the other side is decorated with a panoramic countryside image – a vision of 2030 when dismantling of Germany’s nuclear reactors should be complete.

Colourfully packaged Many experts worked together to produce the high-quality packaging for Krümmel. Printing specialists at the Ellerhold Group started out by optimising all the photographs for printing. The print presses got to work after a colour check with proofing. A HP Scitex XP 5300 printed a total of 85 poster sections on air-permeable mesh fabric in the printing room in Radebeul. The Plauen-based company Golle then took the sections. The company fused and eyeleted the sections so that the giant poster could be put up on scaffolding poles like a mosaic. Industrial climbers from the Berlin-based company admoveo worked on-site up to 50 metres above ground in order to assemble the supersized poster.

Beautiful protective tarpaulinThe poster will decorate the power plant for the next 18 months, while the utility company Vattenfall regularly cleans the facade. The facade had previously been covered by aluminium weatherproof tarpaulins. A protective tarpaulin was necessary, so the operators chose a really special one.
