PROGRAMS FOR HEALTH SCIENCE PROFESSIONALS AND STUDENTS

WelcomeDear friends and colleagues,

We invite you to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Dartmouth healthcare community’s Great Issues in Medicine and Global Health Symposium by attending and being inspired by provocative presentations and discussions about “Global Partnerships”- the eighth Millennium Development Goal. Thomas Pogge, PhD, a world renowned spokesperson for global justice, will give the Keynote Address to the Upper Valley community and a combined grand rounds to health care professionals. He will also meet with Dartmouth’s students of business and medicine. Sheila Davis, DPN, ANP-BC, FAAN, Chief Nursing Officer for Partners in Health in Boston, will challenge nurses, other health professionals, and Dartmouth’s public health students to understand their roles - global and local – in addressing the human rights of the underserved. Sandy Wynne, MSA of the Fair Trade Burlington (Vermont) Network will join Thomas Pogge to encourage local high school students to act individually and collectively on “the moral obligation to end poverty.”

This year’s Symposium topic and speakers are very exciting for a region that cares deeply about social justice and population health. Whether it’s building partnerships to help Haitians after the 2010 earthquake, partnerships to assist neighbors after 2011’s Hurricane Irene, or partnerships to eradicate HIV-AIDS in Africa over three decades, we celebrate the thousands of “doers” across our region. With Symposium co-founder Mark Israel, MD, Director of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, we ask that you join us in discussing one of the world’s greatest challenges and opportunities – advancing global and local partnerships to improve health in under-resourced countries and communities.

Sincerely,

Symposium ObjectivesThe overall goal of the Symposium is to engage our general and professional communities in discussions that lead, ultimately, to individual or collective action about the eighth Millennium Development Goal – maximizing global partnerships for the development of under-resourced countries and communities. At the end of the Symposium, participants from different target audiences will be able to:

• describe the concept of health as a human right;

• discuss methods for advancing global partnerships to improve health in under-resourced countries and communities;

• identify methods to make essential drugs accessible through partnerships with Pharma;

• debate ways to work with private sector companies to increase access to new technologies;

• describe the role and power of local and global Nursing partnerships; and,

• discuss opportunities to promote fair trade.
