This book is issued in the hope that the citi
zens of Dare County and beyond may be remind
ed of the large and worthy role that our men and
women have played in World War II. We also
desire to express, in some measure, our sense of
apprecia~ion, honor, and esteem to those who
served our country to. preserve our freedom and
way of life. Finally, we breathe the prayer that
these shall not have served and sacrificed in
vain, but that out of the agony of war an abid
ing peace will come for all mankind.

Dare County holds a unique place in American history asthe spot of the first English settlement in the new worldand as the birthplace of the first child of England parents.But for the heroic explorations made possible here by SirWalter Raleigh and his associates, the story of the foundingand freeing of our land from the Indians and wilderness,would have been quite different.
"The story of America is largely a record of that spirit ofadventure," said the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt,who witnessed the pageant of the Lost Colony on RoanokeIsland in 1937. "Our heritage is the fruition of their braveendeavor," he continued.

The re-enactment of these early beginnings in
Paul Green's drama of the Lost Colony, has at
tracted throngs of people' to Dare County and
spread the tidings of this section to the far ends
'of the earth. The county was scarcely known and
little populated until the celebration of this "first
event" on this continent.

"Lest We Forget"
The spirit of heroism did not perish with theearly settlers. Daring, courage, initiative, andskill were exemplified by our service personnel.Dare County men and women were representedin the various branches of our war effort, andsome distinguished themselves in playing a gallant role in the global struggle.
Dare County, though small in population ascompared with some counties, had approximately 1,000 of its sons and daughters in the serviceduring the war years, and the county is believedto have been one of the best represented areas inthe country in proportion to the number of inhabitants.
They served and sacrificed that we might havea better and brighter world. This booklet is issued lest we should forget, and to remind usthat we should be eternally grateful for theworthy deeds of Dare County youths.

Destiny has favored Dare County in manyways, and our soil and seashores hold a numberof first places. The first flight in aheavier-thanair, power driven plane was made by Orville andWilbur Wright at Kill Devil Hill, Dec. 17, 1903.
The old lighthouse at Hatteras is one of the
tallest in the world. For many years it guided
ships from the treacherous Diamond Shoals,
"Graveyard of the Atlantic."

Nags Head and Manteo are becoming increas
ingly popular with tourists who enjoy the plea
sures of surf-bathing, swimming, boating, and'
gliding in sail-crafts, or pursuing their nautical
hobbies.
The sharp bark of the hunting rifle and the
booming sound of the shotgun are familiar
sounds in our area, where migratory waterfowl
abound.
Sport fishing is a favorite recreation in thecounty, and chartered boats and guides are available. Off-shore waters are famed for dolphin,amberjack, tuna, channel bass, blues, wahoo,bonito, cero, and smaller game fish. A 593Yzpound blue marlin was caught off Hatteras in1939. Here the Gulf Stream comes near and biggame fishing is done.
Commercial fishing is the principal industry ofthe county. More than 10,000,000 pounds of fishare sold annually, according to a report of theState Department of Conservation and Development. In 1945, one wholesale dealer handled 54,000 pounds in a single day, at Manteo, the County Seat, he reported.
The boat and shipbuilding, and repair businesshas been considerable in the county. And DareCounty is said .to have 34,000 board feet ofcypress.
THE COAST GUARD
* * *The Coast Guard, the ever watchful eye of
the seashore, was greatly expanded during the
war years. The Beach Stations were buzzing
with activity and the augmented personell con
siderably swelled the business of the county.
Embattled vessels and storm-weary craft were
rescued and lives were saved. Besides the reg
ular duties of the Coast Guard, services were
often given civilians whose cars and trucks were
stuck fast in the sand, and the rocking ferry at
Oregon Inlet has been helped to limp across the
rough seas by the ('oast Guard.
Manteo Air Base
* * *The Naval Air Base, which was located near
Manteo during the war, brought hundreds of en
listed men to our community. Numerous pilots
received their training here before they were sent
to combat areas. The development o.,nd mainten
ance of the base, the presence of the service
personnel, including many families of the Navy
men, meant a temporary boom to Manteo.
