This exciting project was initiated by the Secondary School Music Network as teachers recognised that nationally orchestras and classical music are in decline. The network of music teachers meets throughout the year to discuss and share ways to develop music in Solihull secondary schools. It provides support for teachers and allows staff to network with other Solihull Hub Members. Our aim was to provide a free opportunity for young instrumentalist to perform as part of an orchestra at Warwick Arts Centre with musicians they could aspire too. The BBC Ten pieces provide a vehicle to consolidate musical links between members of Solihull Music Hub - Primary and Secondary schools, instrumental teachers, Solihull Music Service. Further enhanced by the partnership with the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the BBC Concert Orchestra. We hope this project will be the catalyst in Solihull to - improve retention of instrumental players. - raise aspirations of our most talented players. - raise the profile of orchestral playing in schools. - improve awareness of access to additional music making opportunities for young people. We hope you enjoy the music this evening as much as we (pupils, staff and partners) have enjoyed rehearsing it together. Pupils that wish to continue with their music making are welcome to join any of the Solihull Music Service ensembles on offer—we would love to see you join us!

As you may or not be aware, Solihull Music Service for many years has been fortunate to have had support from SYMSA – the equivalent of a school Parent Teacher Association (PTA). SYMSA (which is a registered charity) raises funds for the Music Service and supports your children by helping with a range of activities and in a variety of ways, this has included supporting tonight's concert.

There are two strands to SYMSA that need support:

1. The strategic arm, which works with the Music Service to identify projects to

support all pupils in Solihull and then bid for funds to enable these projects to take place, so anyone with fundraising skills or connections to companies that would be interested in supporting such events WE NEED YOU!

2. 2. The practical arm This includes things like

the running of the tuck shop

purchasing tuck every couple of weeks

helping rattle the donation buckets at concerts.

Ten Pieces aims to open up the world of classical music to 7-14 year-olds across the UK

and inspire them to develop their own creative responses to music. The initiative launched

in 2014 and has so far reached over four million people across the UK, inspired three

hugely successful BBC Proms concerts and won a BAFTA for the Ten Pieces II film.

The popular Ten Pieces Coaching Scheme, led by musicians from the BBC Orchestras and

Choirs and Ulster Orchestra in Northern Ireland offers aspiring instrumentalists and

vocalists the chance to improve their performance skills and musicianship through a

selection of bespoke workshops and coaching programmes.

The mission of the BBC Concert Orchestra is to bring inspiring musical experiences to

everyone, everywhere, with the ensemble’s great versatility as the key.

The orchestra can be heard regularly on BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night Is Music Night, and

for BBC Radio 3 it searches out the unusual and quirky, profiling classical masterpieces in

an entertaining way.
