Friends and I stopped by the River City Bar and Grill in apontoon boat this summer. The deck was full on the lakeside--unknown to us the upstairs dance hall was underconstruction. There was a duo entertaining all afternoon onthe deck until we fired up the Beach and Shag music.

Volume 1 No. 4 55555

There’s a Facebook group by this name I belong to.

Recently, a conversation was launched that piqued my

interest and that of a few others. It’s about aspects of

Beach Music and the entertainment industry that are

not only dear to my heart, they’re central issues in the

future of Beach Music. I’ve changed the names to pro-

tect the ‘innocent.’..................................................

C.J.C.J.C.J.C.J.C.J.: QUESTION OF THE DAY: Recorded “Beach

Music” what is time period of Classic original songs?

QUESTION [2]: Will “Beach Music” Recorded af-

ter 1970’s become classics?

D.C.D.C.D.C.D.C.D.C.: There are many many classic beach songs that

have been recorded since the 70’s! As John Hook Would

Say...Disco Saved Beach Music!

C.J.C.J.C.J.C.J.C.J.: D.C., I know there have been many-many re-

corded, my question was meant to ask will they be around

20, 30, 40, or even 10 years from when they came

out..and played by cover bands, DJ’s, Juke Boxes and if

there are any Radio stations that program such?

D.C.D.C.D.C.D.C.D.C.: There are less and less each year due to the fact

there are very few beach music radio stations left, very

few records left & hardly any sales due to downloading

& filesharing, however there are still a few great tunes

that come out each year. Most bands can only afford to

record one or two tunes a year and stick them on compi-

lations for advertising purposes in order to get gigs.. We

are very lucky to have a few dedicated DJs that take a lot

of time doing internet shows and club DJs still support-

ing THE MUSIC! Most of which are doing it for their

love of the music for very little money.

R.S.R.S.R.S.R.S.R.S.: Most of the classics were not recorded as “beach

music.” they were the hits at the time...either on the

Top 40 or R&B stations. There never have been many

true “beach music” stations and the ones left are mostly

struggling. Audience size in relation to the dwindling

number of people that listen to radio at all is a factor,

but mainly because advertisers won’t buy commercial

time. If you truly love a station you must support the

advertisers, not just listen to the station, and tell them

you heard their ads on the station. One other thought

CCCCCarararararolina Molina Molina Molina Molina Music and Busic and Busic and Busic and Busic and Bands, Clubs and Fands, Clubs and Fands, Clubs and Fands, Clubs and Fands, Clubs and Fansansansansans

on the subject of longevity, it’s hard to become a 40 year

classic on the strength of live performance and small

market AM stations.

JJJJJohn Hohn Hohn Hohn Hohn Hook:ook:ook:ook:ook: C.J., you open a wide and deep inquiry.

J.R. and J.D. both offer salient points. To answer your

question with any accuracy there needs to be a clear de-

marcation on what you think constitutes “Classic Caro-

lina Beach Music.” As J.R. pointed out, most of the clas-

sics (I say 98% +)were not recorded as ‘beach music.’

Do we not count all the Temptations, Four Tops, Willie

Tee, Billy Stewart, Showmen (none of their stuff was

recorded as Beach Music or with the Carolinas in mind

in the 60s), Sonny Turner & the Platters, Artistics, Jerry

Butler stuff, etc. as ‘Classic Carolina Beach Music’ ?

[In answer to your question about whether songs will

be around in 10 to 40 years, here’s a tiny tiny sample of

However, there are many who would say that most of

those are not “Carolina Beach Music.” In the past 30

years the definition of Carolina Beach Music, in the minds

of many, has become “songs recorded by regional bands.”

Thus, the criteria for Beach Music in the Golden era of

the 60s is not the criteria of the past 30 years.

Where does this leave giant songs such as J.D.’s “A

Summer Place,” the Shakers’ “Shakin’ the Shack,” Band

of Oz’s “Shama Lama Ding Dong” etc? None of those

were written by the artists cited. Were they Beach hits

(and those all are SUPER hits 10-30 years of age)? They

were recorded by local groups, but not written by them.

At the same time, of the 800 + songs recorded by

regional groups in the 60s, perhaps 15 were played by a

significant number of radio stations. Less than that

showed up on Radio Top 40 surveys in the Southeast.

.......Cannonball’s “You Keep Telling Me Yes” is a no-

table exception.

Sadly, there are fewer distribution channels all the

way round. Fewer venues for bands to play in. Enor-

mously less number of Beach shows (in the early 80s

there were about 80-100, Chris Beachley and I kept track

of them via It Will Stand magazine). There are a few

valiant DJs continuing to try. There are some courageous

bands attempting to stay afloat in a grim environment.

Beneath it all, however, what constituted Beach Music

in the 60s’ Golden Era, is not what will constitute its

future. The world is enormously different.

B.D.B.D.B.D.B.D.B.D.: D.C. and R.S., I 100% agree with both of

your statements. The music must have air play. In fact,

all music must have air play to endure time. Hats off to

the handful of DJ’s that still play the “Beach Music”

tunes, mostly at their own expense.

You are right D.C., if you love the station and it’s

format, support the station by supporting the advertis-

ers.

I believe that a love for a music type is embedded

into a person during the time of their life when they are

most impressionable, typically between 12 and 18 years

of age. It has a lot to do with what we hear during this

period of time in our lives.

Think about what we were drawn to during this pe-

riod in our lives and what our taste in music is today.

Our music is tied to the memories of our past and can-

not be divided from that. Even the modern songs catch

our ear only if they contain a familiar riff, back beat, or

bass line that spurs or thoughts back to what we love.

This facebook group is a Great forum for these types

of discussions. We need to get more members to take

part in this forum but it seems that the same folks are

here daily and the rest are never heard from.

My music career, for one, was not in this venue of

music nor did I work with any of the music labels in

North or South Carolina. I am sure that there are a lot of

others out there that fit this category also and might

have a lot of decent input. I grew up listening to Soul

and R&B before it was ever called beach music, and,

that’s where my musical heart still remains. I love this

music too much to sit back and watch it die.

It’s great to be at SOS and see the older people still

enjoying the tunes, but we have to aim at the young

people to survive. Sure there are some youngsters into

“Beach” and young shaggers also, But I am afraid it’s

like pissing in the ocean.

D.C.D.C.D.C.D.C.D.C.: I totally agree with John Hook & B.D. John

recently released a book listing the Top 200 All Time

Beach Songs Dating Back to the 50’s to present day. A

Must Have For Beach Diggers.

C.J.: John Hook, as they say you “Wrote the Book.”

My Hats off (oops, Sunglasses) to you. I have not been

in the business in almost 40 years, but sometimes when

you stand back and come back to something its like hit-

ting a “Refresh Button”.

I would agree with every thing you say about the

past. Only you and maybe “Nobody Else” can do what

you did by taking newer “National songs” and putting

them into this unique category.

Beach music is like a Bikini I sorta invented 15 years

ago The “Rebel Flag” design, customers in the South-

east bought it because of being “Region Loyal”...I did

not make it with the south in mind, the Artwork is neat

and looked good and it sold all over the US as a Party

thing or River Crowd or Biker Babe thing.

As we all know most of the Major 60’s names like the

Drifters, Platters, Coasters were and are just as popular

would wide...but in Beach Music country its “Beach

Music”.

Other songs that I remember playing mostly at the

Castaways, Coachmen Four, Williams Lake, Cellar from

Bands like Clifford, Showmen, Archie Bell, Chi-lites,

Willie Tee etc were “National acts all from outside the

Carolina’s at the time and many more, BUT, did tend to

(I think) Sell better and were more popular when “Re

Branded” as Beach Music.

The reason for the post was a little self centered..with

out me being so blunt, my question was will there be

anymore Summertime is Calling Me, I Love Beach Mu-

sic, Myrtle Beach Days, You Keep Telling Me Yes... etc

etc...songs from the last 20 years or going forward.....I

think as always you “Hit it out of the Park.”

C.J.C.J.C.J.C.J.C.J.: Follow up to John Hook I do think that at

some point and I think it has to happen, Popular music

will once again be “Pretty Songs” with nice Hooks and

themes and it could very well be like Blue Grass..it’s

outside of Country but in updated forms its very alive

and well and being played by new guys that go back and

look at Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt etc.

“Straight Ahead Jazz” which is my favorite music to

listen to has all but gone away also with only about 3

full time Jazz stations (All Public Broadcasting).

I do not include Soft or “Smooth Jazz” which is to me

more easy listening music. Blues is our “Roots Music”

that ties everything together within Rock to Soul..and I

think it is hear to say in its place, which is small but

stable.

B.TB.TB.TB.TB.T.....: My Two Cents worth/A while back I was in

front of Judies at the beach and a Beach Music legend

was holding court in front//He made the statement

”Shaggers had Killed The Beach Music Band”//He went

on to explain that the songs a group he preformed with

50 years ago was still being played every week at shag

clubs through out the south/

The song he had recorded last year “went to number

one” on one popular radio station. But was soon forgot-

ten.

There are a lot of good songs today//But I do not

think they will be remembered as classic Beach Music. I

have written and sold more music this year than any-

time in my life”

”Music has always been a part time business for me”

The three song I sold for national commercials started

out in the studio as Beach Music Songs//As we played

the finished product back through the monitors, .....

and I danced to make sure it was the correct tempo/

Even had other dancers come in. Needless to say I have

never had a “Beach Music ”hit.

Many talented writers associated with Beach Music

have all but stopped trying to put new songs out there

as Beach Music. We are selling to other markets and be-

ing successful at it, Just ask Rick Strickland and Lisa .

The legend that day in front of Judies said if you

want a Beach Music hit, Do a remake of a remake every

five years, and very soon they will give you an award for

it..

Point, Shaggers do not seem to like new material and

are in most cases unwilling to give it a chance//They

would much rather have of one “The Beach Bands ”re

record one more version of “Ain’t no Big Thing”.

PPPPP.G..G..G..G..G.: you know a great friend of mine and mentor

the late Leighton Grantham , said probably 15 years

ago, the new stuff has no sticking power, well some of it

does but not a whole lot sad to say,,,

C.J.C.J.C.J.C.J.C.J.: D.C., The key word is “Customers” as I see it.

Many of the Radio stations lived off of local Stores, Shops

and businesses in the 70’s and 80’s and the national

rotation ads were used as fillers. Well, guess what look at

the Strip malls and free standing retail and service busi-

nesses along the city streets. They are Food chains and

Insurance, Tax Prep, Dollar General, Hair Salon Chains

and some empty...when is the last time you saw a local

or regional Clothing store, Record Store, Waterbed store,

Shoe Store, Sports store? The stores and buildings that

are not empty have National or Non-Radio friendly or

print for that matter businesses left. I had a small retail

chain of 45 Jean shops in the 70’s and 80’s..I was on 50

Radio stations in markets from Memphis to Myrtle Beach

and Augusta to Greensboro. Not only have Jobs gone

overseas and imports shut down factories, Retail and

Service has gone to national chains and online. So what

happens 4 or 5 stations operate out of one building and

use Music that is piped in from LA or NY etc and much

of the big numbers come in on Talk stations.....Just one

of many effects on recorded music and Jobs from D.J.s

to Bands to Record Co’s to Retail Staff etc etc etc. (I am

not from Radio biz, but love it and miss the Ads..I used

to like to here the local Waterbed store ads and T-Shirt

giveaways and Live remotes!!

John HookJohn HookJohn HookJohn HookJohn Hook: C.J., in answer to your post about

whether there will be “....anymore Summertime is Call-

ing Me, I Love Beach Music, Myrtle Beach Days, You

Keep Telling Me Yes... etc etc...songs from the last 20

years or going forward....” It’s a melancholy question.

I wrote a 30-page reflection on this and related issues in

the Beach Music Guide 1945-2006. I was looking

from a broader perspective than the usual *60s Golden

Era of Beach Music* view. At the time I was interested

in the broad strokes of history. The music which ‘be-

came’ Beach Music in the 60s had a 20 year head start

on the ‘Beach Music Era.’ And during that era, ca 1963

to 1970 (?) there was never a single song written by any

local group which lauded or saluted ‘Beach Music.’ Nor

were there any in the early or mid 70s. It was on an

Embers Live album out of Florida in the late 70s when

Jackie Gore first mentioned Beach Music. A year later

he wrote and they sang a song about it. I mark the late

70s as the beginning of Beach Music’s Teenage years —

the first years of *self-awareness* and *self-consciousness*

— that awareness began to show up in original songs.

Look how incredible the energy was at that time!!! The

momentum and velocity were enormous going into the

80s. It was a very heady and exciting time. Eventu-

ally the teenage years ended — I mark that in 1986

when the new drinking laws virtually eliminated Beach

Bands from the college campuses and nightclubs closed

by the droves. Beach Music venues disappeared fast.

So where have we arrived in the 90s, 2000s, and in a

new decade. Beach Music has reached adulthood. Like

many adults it is bitter, disappointed, pessimistic, even

invalidating its own existence. What kind of lyrics will

these moods generate? Fortunately, they aren’t the

only moods floating in our area. There have been some

fantastic, adult, lyrics written. They haven’t become

giant hits. However, as I’m sure you know, 90% of the

hundreds of thousands of songs in the vaults of Colum-

bia, RCA, Decca, Capitol, OKeh, Atlantic, Stax-Volt,

and other labels, never saw the light of day, a chart, or

any radio airplay. The idea that most Beach Bands have

been recording since the early 1980s with a largely

grounded expectation of getting airplay and exposure in

clubs GOES TOTALLY AGAINST THE ODDS IN ALL

OTHER ENTERTAINMENT VENUES. We have

lived charmed lives.

PPPPP.G..G..G..G..G.: Then as John says about these songs in the last

ten years or so, look at the songs the bands worked up or

even did versions of “Back That Thang UP” Big Sisters

Radio, Crazy, Heaven....

(the one below is just a demo)(the one below is just a demo)(the one below is just a demo)(the one below is just a demo)(the one below is just a demo)

Well, OK, it’s new to you, but I’ve been tracking these

and other sites for seven years.

First off, I use Alexa to determine Internet rankings.

Alexa has tracked and published sites for years, publish-

ing a Top 500 which they keep updated. Below is their

Top 20. Any surprises? Google is # 1, Facebook is # 2,

and Youtube is # 3.

What these rankings show is where each site ranks, in

comparison to all others on the planet, in terms of traf-

fic, i.e. ‘visits’ to the site.

Rankings are not a measure of *hits*, which is one of

the most bogus ‘statistics’ around today. One person

can visit a site, look at a few pages, click on a few links,

and generate 100s or 1000s of *hits* in that one visit.

A legitimate visit is one marked by a single visit from

an IP address. It is conceivable that a single person could

generate many visits, but that person would have to leave

and return to the site ten times to generate ten visits.

There’s

a way to ‘guesstimate’ how many ‘unique’ visits a website

is getting -- but it’s a ‘guesstimate’ at best. For example,

I pay for a separate stats tracking program on my site at

www.beachshag.com I know how many unique visitors

I have (30,000 per month) and how many accumulative

visits they generate per month.

Given that, I can make a ‘guess’ as to how many ‘vis-

its’ the other sites on the Top 40 + chart are getting each

month.

A Little About RankingsA Little About RankingsA Little About RankingsA Little About RankingsA Little About Rankings

Note that in the demo chart to the left, Google is # 1

and Apple.com comes in at # 20 this month.

In this week’s Beach Music Website Top 40+ (on page

.........), cashboxmagazine.com comes in at # 1 and the

S.O.S. site at shagdance.com is # 2. HoweverHoweverHoweverHoweverHowever !!

However, when comparing the Beach Music Website

Top 40 + to the Top 500 in the World there are some

distinct differences.

Cashboxmagazine.com ranks overall, in the world, at

1,069,132. The S.O.S. site ranks in the world at

1,759,871. Thus, the chart represents two rankings, 1)

the overall worldwide ranking, and 2) their ranking within

the community of Beach Music-related websites.

Inclusions and ExclusionsInclusions and ExclusionsInclusions and ExclusionsInclusions and ExclusionsInclusions and Exclusions

Every Shag club and Bop club website isn’t represented

here because most of them don’t generate a ranking.

When Alexa gets to approximately 28,000,000 it ceases

to rank websites, there is simply too little data, meaning

that they probably only have about 20 or 30 visits per

month, if that much.

Note that in the Beach Music Website Top 40+ chart,

I stop numbering them after # 49. You’ll see to the right

that the sites didn’t generate a worldwide ranking with

Alexa. # 49 ranks # 24,003,132 in the world this week.

Cashboxmagazine.com holds an unusual status because

it isn’t exclusively Beach Music. In fact, it’s not primarily

Beach Music.

I include it because when Cashbox Magazine and I

developed a joint venture to carry all three of my syndi-

cated shows beginning four years ago, Cashbox magazine’s

world ranking was almost at the 4,000,000 mark. I’d

seen they were steadily gaining on Billboard magazine

for several months.

We joint ventured as I closed down the Endless Sum-

mer Network which was garnering 30,000 plus listeners

as I was moving my shows over to Cashbox.

Within a few months Cashbox magazine zoomed past

Billboard and has never looked back. Their site has con-

sistently ranked at the top of the Beach-related charts

and the CEO has reminded me several times that it’s the

Beach Music Top 40, the Yearly Beach Music Top 40,

and the Roadhouse Blues, Boogie and Fish Fry which

helped catapult Cashbox in the rankings.

Prior to that, the Endless Summer Network was con-

sistently # 1 for three years. That changed on the day

that 949thesurf.com (94.9 The Surf in North Myrtle

Beach) knocked me out of the # 1 spot. They enjoyed

their time in the sun for about a year, then WSGE in

Dallas, NC (# 9 this week) knocked them off their perch

and maintained the top spot for several months. And

change just keeps on coming.

SSSSSeasonal Rise and Feasonal Rise and Feasonal Rise and Feasonal Rise and Feasonal Rise and Fallallallallall

There are some websites which rise and fall according

to their ‘season.’

The Carolina Beach Music Awards site at cammy.org

begins to rise every fall as their big event in November

gets closer. In late November their rankings will plum-

met back to the 20s and 30s.

The S.O.S. site has traditionally done the same in the

Spring and Fall, however I have to note that they have

become much stronger in the past few months.

Trianglebeach.com is another which rises and falls

dramatically around the time of their big, one-time per

year Beach Blast in the early part of the year.

Sadly, there used to be many more websites for record

stores. Thank goodness we still have Judy’s House of

Oldies at North Myrtle Beach and the Wax Museum in

Charlotte.

As regards many of my brother and sister DJs -- there

are a couple of challenges in tracking their effectiveness

in the rankings.

Most Beach Music shows are on non-Beach Music

radio stations. Some are even on all Country or all Talk

stations. Thus, a ranking of those stations doesn’t give

any measure of their Beach Shows.

There is a similar problem with Beach-related sites

whose addresses are sub-addresses of Facebook, YouTube,

and a few other Super Portals on the Web.

Note that Facebook ranks # 2 in the world on the

Alexa Top 20 chart on the left-hand page. Thus, any

Facebook page kept by a Beach-related organization is

going to rank on Alexa at # 2 in the world (and obviously

# 1 on the Beach Sites chart). That would be misleading

to the max.

There is a band, a good band, which opened a site on

Volume 1 No. 4 1313131313

one of the super portals recently and their ranking comes

up in the top 100,000 of the world. However, outside

their hometown, no one knows this band. They don’t

*really* rank that high. It’s doubtful they have more

than 40 fans, friends, and family visiting their site. On

that basis, I’m forced to leave them off the chart until

there’s a more accurate measure of their effectiveness on

the web.

All in all, there are only about five or six Beach-re-

lated sites that fall in the super-portal category such that

we’ve had to leave them off the chart.

A few record companies are on the chart:

# 7 Southernsoul.com is record-company related

# 19 Forevermoremusic.com is the home of Terri

Gore’s master recordings, Russell Thompkins Jr., many

by Jackie Gore, the Legendary Dukes and many many

compilations too

# 30 KHPmusic.com The home site of Keith Hous-

ton who has been voted top producer of Beach Music

CDs year after year at the Carolina Beach Music Awards

# 31 Surfsiderecords.com was the company owned

by the late General Johnson and late Mike Branch

# 44 is the site of Ripete.com which used to be near

the top. Sadly, Marion Carter has cut back his involve-

ment in the Beach Music recording world -- an involve-

ment that stretches back to 1980.

The two primary DJ associations come in near the

end of the chart. Probably because only DJs visit their

sites. # 40 The National Association of R&B DJs, and

# 46 The Association of Beach and Shag Club DJs.

Greg Haynes’ “Hey Baby Days” site is last at # 49. I

think if he was more active with his Blog he would have

more visitors. There for a few months his blogsite was a

fountain of esoteric Beach music information.

(Note: The first column in the charts is the number

of weeks which this chart represents--20 weeks. The sec-

ond column shows where each of the sites ranked 20

weeks ago. You’ll see that I wasn’t tracking some of them

20 weeks ago, OR, they didn’t rank 20 weeks ago so

there’s no number in column two).

The Surf came back strong after being dark for several

weeks at the beginning of the year. Let’s hope their slip

from # 4 to # 6 is temporary.

WSGE was way down the tubes for much of the year,

but has leaped back up from # 18 to # 9.

Loafers Beach Club and the O.D. Pavilion have both

jumped up the chart to # 13 and # 17 respectively.

1340theboardwalk.net in Charleston, SC is moving -

- # 25 to # 21. John Dixon LIVE is surely the reason.

I don’t know how many DJs were already on this at

S.O.S. Fall Migration, but it was no surprise to hear

brother DJ Ed Timberlake playing this right after S.O.S.

He seems to have a kind of radar that picks up on up-

coming Daryl Hall releases long before anyone else’s in-

ternal tuning fork starts to vibrate.

Daryl’s Laughing Down Crying has several songs wiht

possibilities, but let’s start with “Eyes For You.”

Ken Knox and the Chairmen of the Board are back

on the charts. Long live the General, long live the Chair-

men of the Board.

If there was any doubt whether Ken and the fellas

could pull the revitalized Chairmen of the Board back to

the front of the stage, this song should quell the doubts.

We look forward to their followups as well.

I walked into a huge seafood restaurant entertain-

ment center on Lake Wylie across the border from Char-

lotte this summer and there they were on the marquee -

- coming soon!

Lakeside Drive Band has had a super first year to-

gether.

“Candy Girl” is doing quite well on the charts and

they already have a smooth steppin’ tune recorded with

Gene Pharr of the Continentals ready to take the “Candy

Girl’s” place.

Like a phoenix, Danny Woods also rose from the

ashes of the Chairmen of the Board legend.

Danny’s had his challenges and his successes.

“Back to the Beach” is just one of the tunes here that

demonstrates what these folks are capable of bringing to

the stage.

We wish Danny and the Board of Directors the best

in the coming months. Godspeed, Danny.

Although this CD by no means marks the end of

music-makin’ by these gals (Gaye Adegbalola in the cen-

ter and Ann Rabson on the right already have new CDs

workin’). It was only 25 years ago, their first album,

that we added “Middle Aged Boogie Blues” to the for-

mat, despite it’s 6 minute length, and it became one of

our most requested hits. “Too Much Butt” is another

tongue in cheek classic from their LAST CD.

More homegrown Blues and Boogie from Eden,

North Carolia. These fellas sound so seasoned I wouldn’t

be surprised at a double-CD release -- just because they

know so much stuff (of course, who can afford to release

a double CD when no one buys CDs anymore?)

Doug and the Calabash Blues Boys have impressed

us from day one, and the first of their CDs. Love to

catch these guys live sometime.

How many of you remember that Hank Williams Jr.

had a song the same as the name of this group -- Lawyers

Guns and Money? Something we’re going to have to

look into a little more.

This is fully home-grown in upstate North Carolina

and we expect to hear a lot more from these folks. There

are three exceptional, thumpin’, pile driver tunes on here

that are already playing the Roadhouse.

“Hook, Line and Sinker” has leapt to the Top 40.

Laura B looks a little young on YouTube. Let me

correct that, she looks a LOT younger than the material

she sings...and she sings it well. She seems destined to

become a blues belter and shouter in the finest tradition

of Ruth Brown, Etta James, and scores of other jump

blues immortals.
