WVOK is ranked # 38 of the Top 40 radio stations of

all time as compiled by Oldies Pop Music Examiner.

WVOK 690 was Birmingham’s first 50,000 watt radio

station.

Their February 4, 1967 surve features a couple of

Beach Classics:

“Wish You Didn’t Have To Go” by the Purifys and

“Are You Lonely” by Freddy Scott. But there’s another

hidden here that might be missed - especially if you

weren’t around in 1967.

Can you guess what it is?

See page 10, bottom left.

More Beach songs:

“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” by Frankie Vallie, “Make

Me Yours” by Bettye Swan (a brand new release cur-

rently bubbling under the Beach Music Top 40 by Su-

san Trexler),

“Respect” by Aretha (if not in 1967 then 20 years

later when the Blues Brother movie put it back in the

spotlight and the Shaggers jumped on it), and the first

truly local Beach song, “Lonely Drifter” by the Pieces of

8.

Pieces of 8 are # 16 on the July 1, 1967 survey.

66666 Dancing On the Edge News

Pictured on the survey is Harold G. “Hal” Hodgens

(Feb 7, 1937 - Sep 8, 1991), from the days when air

people often wore multiple hats.

Hal was not only a DJ, which you can see in his pic-

ture, he was also the Sales Manager and News Director

for WVOK from 1958 to 1971.

Hal also owned the Hodgens Advertising Agency and

was part owner and general manager of WBUL Radio

from 1971 - 1979.

At # 20 the Pieces of 8 were still hanging in there.

Although the Pieces of 8’s “Lonely Drifter” had

dropped off the WVOK chart by August 19th, note in

the bottom left of the survey that they would be back to

play for a WVOK dance on August 24th.

Also note the mention of WVOK’s SCENE magazine

in the bottom right.

WVOK’s sister station in Montgomery, Alabama was

WBAM which published a SCENE magazine. Presum-

ably, they both ran similar pictures and stories -- it’s

doubtful they each created entirely separate magazines,

too much work.

So, I speculate that the Pieces of 8 ran in the Bir-

mingham SCENE magazine just as their picture did in

at least one issue of WBAM’s SCENE magazine.

(Soonafter they recorded “Lonely Drifter” the Pieces

of 8 consisted of Wally Wood, Mark “Bird” Wrenn, Steve

Caldwell, Brent Fortson, Ken Helser, Irven Hicks, Jim

Bumgardner, and Carlie Barbour -- not in that order in

their picture here).

How many times have you heard about The Barrell? Or Buck’s Barrell? Or Jap’s Barrell? They wereall the same place. Right there on Ocean Boulevard, O.D. (or North Myrtle Beach), across from wherethe Boulevard Grill operated for several years. (Photos courtesy of Vance Elrod, the cool dood in theBermuda shorts and sunglasses).

The Casinos’ “I Still Love You” on the flip side of

“Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye” is considered to be a

Beach record by some.

Swing, Too. Swing Two? Donny and Susan Trexler

were Swing, Too for years, with several 45s and an LP to

mark their journey through the Southeast.

Susan currently has “Make Me Yours” bubbling un-

der the Beach Music Top 40 from a new compilation

CD.

WWDR in Murfreesboro, NC must have been one of the fine stations to hear in 1967

-- and they fearlessly played a few Beach tunes!

The Tams’ TTTTTime for the ime for the ime for the ime for the ime for the TTTTTamsamsamsamsams LP is spotlighted along with Billy Stewart’s OOOOOld Sld Sld Sld Sld Stan-tan-tan-tan-tan-

The Catalinas have Double Stars next to their “You Haven’t the Right” on Smash

Records -- a tune written by member Tommy Plyler from Statesville.

It gets better -- the Tams’ “I’ve Been Hurt” was # 10 for the week.

Lulu has been singing R&B (!) since her first hit in

Britain, “Shout,” in 1964. She preceded Van Morrison

and Them’s first hit, “Here Comes the Night” and has

been throwin’ down ever since. Unfortunately, she just

never got promoted here much except for the To Sir With

Love Movie and her subsequent hit of the same name.

Scottish Lulu was once married to Maurice Gibb of

the Bee Gees, had a variety show, on British TV and has

racked up more than one tune with the National R&B

DJ Association as well as the Beach Music Top 40 in the

past 24 months.

Donnie Ray is one of the central figures in the mod-

ern Southern Soul movement as well as an often and in-

tentional contributor to Beach and Shag music -- as are

many of his colleagues at Ecko Records out of Memphis.

“Who’s Rockin’ You” is instantly reminiscent of

Johnnie Taylor’s late 60s’ “Who’s Makin’ Love” (to your

old lady, while you were out makin’ love?).

Keep ‘em comin’ Donnie.

Grady Champion had 27 brothers and sisters!!! What

could that have done to his psyche? Found out on this

CD. He worked hard as a farmer, sang in the church

choir as an 8 year old, then his mother moved the family

to Miami when he was 15. After graduation he tried

boxing, DJing, and other careers before settling on

performing...especially Roadhouse style. “Make that

Monkey Jump” is on the Roadhouse chart.

Texas Red is Paul Halperin and he’s the Real Deal!

He and his band are straight ahead, traditional Road-

house Bluesmen. Jimmy Reed and Muddy Waters’ tunes

show up in their repertoire often.

Red said growing up in San Antonio was like a Texas

version of the Ozzie and Harriet show, EXCEPT that his

best friend’s Dad was manager of a radio station with an

R&B show at night. Uh oh! We know what that will do

to a white kid, don’t we! He listened to Ray Charles,

Jackie Wilson, and Bo Diddley, til he heard a Robert

Johnson tune--guess he made a trip to the Crossroads.....

When I found their five albums, I couldn’t believe

I’d never heard of these guys.

They’ve been described as “Fabulous Thunderbirds,

raised as hoodlums in downtown Chicago, dressed to

the nines like die hard Mafiosi, ready for a lead role in

Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, while playing au-

thentic [Roadhouse] Blues.

Pass the BBQ ribs and the Glen Livet, please.

We found out about Knock-Out Greg after he’d al-

ready produced five CDs. Go to his Wig-Flipper CD in

2000 and prepare to be flipped: he performed the Treniers’

“Get Out of the Car,” Jimmy McCracklin’s “I’m Through”

and other lost classics. Greg and Blue Weather are strong.

Start with this or any of his CDs.
