The Committee’s role is to allow issues and concerns relating to the operation of the landfill to be debated and negotiated. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding Redvale Landfill please contact Andy Vosper on 09 427 0600 or your nearest Liaison Committee member.
Members were elected to the Committee by the community or have been appointed to represent particular interest groups. Minutes of the meetings are available for perusal at the Waste Management NZ Ltd office. Any member of the public is able to attend and be heard at these meetings as long as at least two days’ notice is given to the Secretary Michelle via email - [email protected]

Notice of Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting of the Dairy Flat Community Trust will be held on Tuesday 2nd August 2016 at 7.30pm at the Waste Management offices, Landfill Access Rd, Dairy Flat.
The election of Trustees will take place at this meeting and only residents residing in the Dairy Flat area may vote. No absentee voting is to take place as per the Trust’s Deed.
Nomination of Trustees Three Trust members are retiring by rotation in terms of the Trust Deed but are eligible for re-election. Any person 18 years and over and residing in the Dairy Flat area may nominate a Trustee or stand for election. Any nomination must be signed by the nominee and the nominator. Please include a short biography of the nominee and their contact phone numbers.

Redvale Landfill
Hi from Waste Management Redvale team. It has been
quite a summer of construction activity with work
progressing well on the new cell floor and side slopes
in Phase 20A, as well as all the capping and restoration
works that have been underway on the northern and
eastern slopes. This work is now complete, with
topsoil and seeding work completed on all external
slopes, as well as internal intermediate cover slopes on
the landfill and slopes in the Managed Fill, and next
year’s excavation area for cell construction. We are
already beginning to see the benefits of this work with
a significant greening up of the eastern and northern
slopes, and Managed Fill.
We made good progress prior to Christmas with the
completion of the acoustic barrier to the southwest of
the Generators, which reduces the impact of generator
noise to the residents of Richards Road.
The Environment Court decision was released on 11th
March 2016, which provides for an extension in time to
2028, coinciding with a time when our air discharge
consent also expires. A copy of the consent is made
available at the offices should anyone wish to look at it.
WMNZ are currently getting prepared to accept all the
new conditions.
Landfilling has over the last few weeks moved away
from the higher ground to the north, and will for the
next few months be located in a central low elevation,
branching off the main access road. The small floor
area will be filled progressively with a fluff layer and
the second layer being filled as soon as practicable,
thus reducing the possibility for odour from fresh
waste. Soil volumes are being filled in the south of the
footprint, close to the new wheelwash which is now
fully commissioned.
Currently we have vacancies for experienced
equipment operators, gas technicians, and as a
company we are on the lookout for good drivers (class
4 and 5) for our Auckland municipal and commercial
collections teams. Anyone interested to find out more

Community Liaison Chairman's Comment
Summer is finally coming to an end which will bring about seasonal changes to the operations at Redvale Landfill.
Hopefully the second wheel-wash, which is now operational, will help keep the Dairy Flat Highway much cleaner as we get into winter months. Having said that it might be hard to tell given a big increase in truck movements to an ever increasing number of clean/managed fills within Dairy Flat.
Anyone driving on the Highway will have noted Waste Management have groomed the northern face of the Landfill now and refuse operations have moved in a westerly direction. Amazing how that has improved the look of the Landfill.
There continues to be odour issues, particularly on the western front, and the Committee had approached Auckland Council for better feedback regarding complaints made directly to Council, without similar notification to Waste Management at the same time. Council have co-operated and this information is being made available to Waste Management (in a more timely manner), and the Committee. This will allow better cross-referencing of complaints which should hopefully assist in finding ways to better mitigate these issues.
The Consent process (time extension to the life of the Landfill) has now been finalised. As previously commented the life of the Landfill has been extended to 2028 with a number of modifications made to previous Consent conditions. These are being worked through and implemented by Waste Management.

Dairy Flat rollout of new recycle bins
Auckland Council (AC) in its second term of office is working towards making its recycling collection service consistent across the region and this will include the rural areas of Dairy Flat.
This means the present practice of placing household recyclables in bins or crates at the end of driveways or at common collection points will change as the whole Auckland region moves to new 240 litre wheelie bins. The recyclables will continue to be collected from the gate or your kerbside address of your property after assessment has been made of site specific dangers of selected rural roads where sight distances are in question, traffic speeds a concern and general roading conditions may affect safety.
The bins are to collect clean glass and plastics, together with paper and cardboard. Collection dates may change as well, but this will be confirmed newer the start date of 1 July 2016.
The reason AC is introducing new 240 litre recycle bins is in the interests of efficiency and consistency throughout Auckland and this city’s waste minimisation targets and programme. Old bins and crates can be returned to the Whangaparaoa recycle centre or your local school who may take these receptacles from you for reuse in your community. You will just need to check with your local school beforehand.
These wheelie bins are colour green with yellow lids. Should these bins prove too small or too large, they can be exchanged for two other sizes – 120 litre or 360 litre by ringing council and explaining your situation.
Attempts to assist the elderly with their recycle bins will be addressed by Council on a case by case basis and by ringing (09) 301 0101 and asking for a waste solutions team officer.
Finally as already mentioned this new collection will start 1 July 2016 using a new fleet of automated trucks suited to this type of collection.

Dairy Flat School
The PTA held a fun Trivia Night in April, raising funds for our playground. We would like to thank the Dairy Flat Community Trust for their generous donation towards our new Junior Playground and the upgrade of the Senior Playground. Our new junior playground was put in in March and is very popular with the younger students. We are still trying to raise additional funds needed to complete the upgrade of the senior playground.
This term the school learning focus is STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. Students are enjoying creating and exploring a whole range of different scientific topics. Our dance group, choir, and Kapa Haka group are all in full swing and will be putting on a concert at the end of the term.
Report time is coming up and students are preparing to talk to their families about their learning.
The student council is involved in a traffic project at the moment. With Auckland Transport and the NZ Police, they recorded speeds outside the school before school every day for a week, both when the 60km/hr lights were on and when they were off. Over the six days we used the laser gun to record speeds, an average of 28% of vehicles were going over the speed limit. This is of significant concern to us due to the risk to student safety. We also recorded the number of trucks that passed the school. We noted that, on average, one truck went past the school every minute. The students are going to work on a safety video, once they have completed their data gathering. We are monitoring the carpark traffic and parking issues this week.
Winter sports has started. Dairy Flat School is represented in various sports by 19 teams. The teams are all coached and managed by parent volunteers. They do a fantastic job. Our school is growing and we have a wonderful parent community. We greatly appreciate their support.

The music clubs have been involved in the daily running of the Dairy Flat Community Hall for over 8 years and they would gratefully appreciate some local support. Greenpark Preschool
We have had another busy term at preschool. We had many monarch butterflies emerging from their chrysalises at the start of the term, the children loved to help them outdoors to fly away to safety. The weather was perfect so we were able to spend a lot of time outdoors in the sandpit where we had the water trough to enhance our sandpit play.
We had an enthusiastic group in the B4 5 school readiness team. We played games to practise pencil control, letter and number recognition. All five of the children in the group have transitioned to school. Our school readiness programme ensures a smooth transition to the new entrance class.
We had one of our mums visit us to share her experiences as a local vet. The children were interested in the medical equipment she brought to show us. They all had a turn to be a vet, testing the equipment on each other.
In February we celebrated the Chinese New Year – the year of the monkey. One of our Mums brought in traditional Chinese food to share. She made little red paper bags with chocolate coins in them and she taught our children how to make cut-out stencils to display on our windows. We all enjoyed this experience. We took our box construction Chinese Dragon outdoors and to the beat of a drum, we paraded around the lawn in celebration.
Each morning we fed our sheep, Lizzy and Polly their pellets – they always come to the preschool fence when they know there is a treat for them. They have lambs of their own now. We remember when they were little lambs themselves just a little while back.
We had a Teddy Bears Picnic at the end of February. We invited our parents and grandparents to join us for some teddy bear songs and a special morning tea. Due to the wet weather on the day we had a great time playing games with our teddies indoors.
We had a very special visitor who arrived in a rescue helicopter. One of our Dads landed a helicopter in the paddock to give the children an opportunity to have a close look inside his flying machine and the equipment used for his rescue missions. Great excitement – and a lot of questions asked. What a wonderful learning experience.

Silverdale Squash Club
Silverdale Squash Club is a great venue to meet other socially minded people (and a few even play squash well). If you have never tried squash – it’s a great way to keep fit over winter without getting brain numbed at the gym!
We have several Interclub squash teams and we have teams to suit all abilities – men and women and several mixed Masters Teams (the oldest is over 70 so clearly you are never too old to enjoy squash!) We also have a Masters tournament on the 25-27 August
For juniors, we have started a kids’ club night on Wednesdays 4.45 – 6.15. Come and try it out! Also tuition is still being run by the club’s coach – so if anyone under 16 is interested, email the club at [email protected] or see our Facebook page.
For those who want to get seriously fit and really improve their squash, our coach Shelley Kitchen (ex New Zealand Number 1) is running coaching sessions throughout the week. The only question is how can someone who makes you work so hard, be so nice!
We are always looking for new members – new to the game or experienced. Come along to Club Night on Thursday evenings 7pm onwards and give it a go.

Waitoki Plants
A busy season.
Autumn is a busy time in the garden. This is the traditional planting time. While we haven’t had a good soaking rain to raise soil moisture, temperatures haven’t yet dropped. Once we get the rain we should see some good growth, which means a good time to start planting and feed existing plants. When planting in the garden don’t forget to allow for a layer of mulch so the plant’s trunk isn’t any lower in the soil than it was in the bag. Now is a good time to trim up those autumn flowering plants that have finished flowering; a light trim with the hedge clippers over Hebe, Daisy, etc. Make sure you stay in the new wood, hacking into old wood which has dropped its leaves is much harder work as well as giving the plants a shock they may not recover from. Some perennials on the other hand, i.e. Salvia, Penstemon, etc. can be cut right back to the ground. You should have finished pruning the stone fruit, and be having a breather before starting on the pip fruit. Wait till these have dropped their leaves. Trimmings are always good candidates for the compost bin, mixed with those ever available weeds, some animal manure, and plenty of moisture.
It’s also a very good time to empty the mature compost around gardens and fruit trees. Remember access will become more difficult with the winter rain, with it getting very mucky underfoot, a little judicious planning at this stage may save a bit of hassle later. Knowing what you are going to plant prior to the start of the planting season will help maximise time spent out with spade in hand.

Silverdale Pony Club
What an amazing season we have had. Thank you to all our member’s, the Dairy Flat community and local businesses that have sponsored and supported Silverdale Pony Club this season. It is very much appreciated.
We held our prize giving last week, and seeing what our members have achieved over the season was very impressive. All our members that sat their certificates passed. Congratulations to them and our amazing coaches. We also had many members represent North Harbour Pony Club at Area events, Show Jumping, Dressage, and Show Hunter. It’s great to see our kids out competing.
The Secondary Schools Horse Trials held their One Day Event at our grounds this year. It was great to see over 70 riders from the greater Auckland region competing at our Pony Club. The organisers did a fantastic job of setting up and running this event. Our Cross Country course looked amazing. Thanks to all our hard working members who also helped.
With the pony club season coming to an end, and winter on its way, we are now planning for next season. As we finalise our enrolment dates and Riders without Horses Course dates, these details will be posted on our website, www.silverdaleponyclub.com.

A Community Learning Directory for the Hibiscus Coast and surrounding communities has been produced to make it easier for people to find out what learning opportunities are on offer in our area.
There are over 140 tutors offering around 180 courses. The section headings are: Art and Craft, Business and Finance, Computing, Food and Cooking, Fitness and Recreation, Music and Dance, Language and Travel, Personal Development as well as a large section for Children and Teens.
This free directory booklet was delivered to all households on the Hibiscus Coast – unfortunately the funding received did not allow delivery to outlying areas. Copies are available in the Dairy Flat store, the Orewa and Whangaparaoa libraries and the Citizens Advice Bureau in Orewa.
