AGARTALA, Nov 28:

North Eastern states have thepotential to be ‘litigation free’states in the country as it is anarea where people settle dis-putes in the traditional way ofmediation, Supreme Court judgeMadan B Lokur said today.

“This region is an area wherepeople settle their disputes intraditional manner. Mediation ispractised in the region to settlethe disputes,” Justice Lokur saidwhile inaugurating the

‘Regional Conference ofMediation’ here.

The former Chief Justice ofGauhati High Court said he hadexperience of seeing the processof mediation in tribal societiesin the region and added thatthere are many litigation-freedistricts in the region.

He also appealed to theadvocates in particular and allsections of people in general toview the process of mediationfrom different perspective andwith a humane angle.

Another justice of the apex

court, Amitava Roy, who wasthe keynote speaker of the con-ference, said mediation is a liv-ing process existent in the tribalsociety which can bring earlyrelief to litigants and can reducethe volume of litigations incourts.

Chief Justice of Tripura HighCourt Deepak Gupta said familydisputes can be solved throughmediation process.

“Where communication hasbroken, mediation can helpbridging the gap in case of fam-ily disputes,” he added.(PTI)
