Governor Rendellwelcome message

The following letter of greeting was sentto this tournament by PennsylvaniaGovernor Edward G. Rendell:

I am pleased to welcome all participantsand visitors to the American Contract BridgeLeague’s 2003 North American BridgeChampionships in Philadelphia.

So much of what we treasure asAmericans has its roots in Philadelphia.William Penn arrived in Philadelphia in1682 aboard the ship Welcome to build asociety based on the ideals of community, religious freedom and democracy. A shortdistance from your hotel you will find theLiberty Bell and Independence Hall, bothicons of our proud American heritage.

Philadelphia is equally proud of CharlesH. Goren, a Philadelphia lawyer worldrenowned among passionate bridge playersas the father of modern bridge. He is credit-ed with promoting the game, which enjoysimmense popularity the world over.

On behalf of all Pennsylvanians, I wishyou much success at the bridge table. In yourleisure time I am sure you will discover thequalities that make this region such anenriching place to visit – the goodness of itspeople, the richness of its historical signifi-cance and its cultural diversity.

Welcome to Philadelphia – “the city thatloves you back!”

Lure of an overtrickBy Gene Benedict

The following deal came up in the first qualify-ing session of the North American Open Pairs.North was the declarer, but I am making South thedeclarer to allow the reader to follow the hand moreeasily.

West North East SouthPass Pass 3NT (1)

All Pass(1) 26-28 high card points.Opening lead: ♦10.

When I was talking about this hand after thesession, Phil Becker used it as an example to showhow unlucky he was. Instead of leading a diamond, his LHO led a low heart. Phil ended up taking onlynine tricks for a poor matchpoint score.

I replied that I had led a diamond but declarerstill took only nine tricks. “Impossible!” saidBecker. “He has 10 tricks now.”

South won the first trick with the queen andrattled off five rounds of spades, putting pres-sure on the defense. West had to make threepitches – he threw two low clubs and a low dia-mond. South continued with the ♣5, covered bythe 9, 10 and queen. Bob Brandow (East)returned the ♥Q, and South won the ace fol-lowed by the ♦A and the ♥K. This is how thingslooked like with three cards left:

♠ —♥ —♦ J♣ J 8

♠ — ♠ —♥ J ♥ 9♦ K 9 ♦ —♣ — ♣ K 3

♠ —♥ 2♦ – ♣ A 6

Making the same play that Zia no doubt wouldhave made, declarer exited with the ♥2! Thinkingthat East must have the ♥J because he led the queenearlier, South thought East would be forced to leadaway from his ♣K and give him a valuable over-trick.

Instead a surprised West won the jack and tooktwo more diamond tricks to hold declarer to ninetricks.

Section topsDistrict 4 has come up with an innovative sec-

tion top award – an assortment of 10 different pack-ets of postcards, three per pack (in a variety of com-binations). The good news is that they are all pre-stamped and include a special pen (with our March2003 logo).

The cards portray many historic Philadelphialandmarks – the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall,City Hall, Elfreth’s Alley, Betsy Ross house, LoganCircle and Boathouse Row.

Take them to your room, address them – and aswe say in Philly – just sign your John Hancock anddrop them in a mailbox. A thoughtful remembrancefor family and friends back home.

Mugs, NABC Philly tee-shirts and a selectionof bridge books are also available as section topawards.

15 bridge prosauctioned off

A bridge first occurred Thursday night when 15bridge experts, who were auctioned off on the onlineauction house Ebay, played in the EducationalFoundation Pairs game with the winning bidders.Several pros were bought as presents for spouses. Ziahad the most action and brought in the most money. His successful bidder and spouse were not planning toattend Philadelphia, but a chance to play with Ziachanged their plans.

Two of the pairs came in overall. DavidBerkowitz and Don Berman were third. DaveTreadwell and Larry Ascher were fifth. Eight morepairs had section scratches: Alan Sontag withAileen Osofsky; Mildred Breed with Lois Stuart;Geoff Hampson with Barbara Shaw; Dan Morsewith Craig Robinson; Kit Woolsey with LucyMcCoy; Mark Shaw with Marty Graf; SteveRobinson with Betty Schuler and Zia Mahmoodwith Jim Senter. Also playing were Bart Bramleyand Mark Lombard, Ron Smith and MichaelMayer, Mike Cappelletti Jr. and Susan Shank,Adam Wildavsky and Andy Muenz, and JeffRoman and Charity Sack.

The pro auction was held for the benefit ofBridge at Schools Inc., a charitable organizationdedicated to getting bridge into schools’ curriculaand getting more youngsters playing bridge. Theorganization also recognizes that volunteer teachersburn out and it is necessary for the current schoolmodel to be changed so that a curriculum can betaught by existing teachers in the schools.

Further information may be obtained by con-tacting [email protected] or any ofthe Bridge at Schools board: Nadine Wood, JoanGerard, Charity Sack or Barbara Heller.

Robin says one of the messages that touchedher most deeply was from Chris Willenken, ayoung expert from New York. He had playedagainst Kay and Kaplan in Kaplan’s last event. When Willenken’s team won, the players scatteredthroughout the hotel. It took some effort, Willenkenrelated to Robin, but Norman found each memberof the winning team and offered his congratula-tions. Willenken told Robin he would never forgetthat gesture.

Says Robin, “Daddy would always say thatanyone would do the same – and he would reallymean it.”

Judy says the special day honoring her late hus-band is sad in a way because it reminds her thatNorman is gone, but it’s also happy because“bridge really enriched Norman’s life so much.”

“Dad was one in a million,” says Robin, “andwith every day that passes, we miss him more, notless.”

An aggressive doubleWhen you’re virtually certain your partner has

full values for his call, it’s a lot easier to take anaggressive action. Bruce Keidan knew that JimMcCarver, the all-time baseball great, would have asolid hand for his takeout double on this deal fromthe Educational Foundation Pairs. Why was he sosure? Because McCarver seldom plays competitivebridge and as a result has not learned to take thechances that modern players often take. So Keidandoubled a partial with minimum values.

Keidan led a diamond to McCarver’s ace, andMcCarver switched to a low heart. Declarer’squeen won and declarer tried the losing clubfinesse. McCarver led a diamond, and declarer dis-carded a heart as Keidan took his king. Back camea heart to declarer’s ace, but the defense alreadyhad three tricks, and the trump spots were such thatthe defense came to three more tricks there. Plus200 was a tie for top.

McCarver thoroughly enjoyed his short visit tothis NABC. Bridge is an important part of his life, and he found it fun to hobnob with some of thegreats of the game..

the Grand Ballroom, Salon E, are B. Jay Becker, JohnCrawford, Bobby Goldman, Charles Goren, RobertJordan, Norman Kay, Peter Pender, Olive Peterson,Arthur Robinson, Helen Sobel Smith, CharlesSolomon, Dave Treadwell and Sally Young.

The unveiling was a family affair for theSilodors and Beckers. Other Silodor relatives wereJerry’s sister, Susan Hoyt; her husband, Bill Cohenand her brother, Bruce Birch. Becker’s sons,Michael and Steve, also were present.

District 4 Representative Craig Robinsonemceed the unveiling, noting that Philadelphia has“a rich history of bridge stars.” He did acknowl-edge that Treadwell, from Wilmington DE, was“kidnapped” to be part of the group.

For Jerry Silodor, the event had special signifi-cance because of his memories of his father and hisbridge exploits.

Jerry remembers kibitzing for about three hoursduring the final of the Vanderbilt Knockout Teamsin 1956 or 1957 in New York. Silodor was playingwith Crawford in the open room of the event, whichSilodor’s team won. “It was very exciting,” Jerrysays.

Jerry and Fran have been playing bridge seri-ously for about six years, mostly at clubs in Florida.Interestingly, Jerry says, there are many playersfrom Philadelphia at the clubs where he plays whotook bridge lessons from his father. “When theyhear the name,” Jerry says, “they go crazy.”

Jerry still feels the loss of his father, who diedin 1963 at the age of 56. Jerry’s parents weredivorced and he lived with his mother, so he didn’tget the bridge influence he might have had underdifferent circumstances.

Says Francine of her husband: “He could havebeen the best. He’s a really good player.”

Jerry, a retired ophthalmologist, says he recallsreceiving a phone call from his father one day abouta year before he died. “He said he couldn’t add uphis bridge scores,” Jerry recalls. “He came to myoffice and I examined him. He had lost half hisvision, and I thought he had had a stroke, so I rec-ommended that he see a neurologist. He was diag-nosed with a brain tumor and he died about a yearlater.”

Although Jerry has not achieved bridge expert-ise commensurate with his blood line, he doesenjoy the game. “It’s the only card game I like,” hesays. “It makes you think.”

Still, he says, “I don’t like to tell people my lastname. They expect too much.”
