Generously grease the pudding mold and the underside of the lid with shortening or cooking spray.

To make the pudding: cream the shortening and sugar, then add the eggs. Mix in the remaining ingredients. Fill the greased mold with the batter, no more than two-thirds full to ensure that it has room to rise. Have ready a large pot with a tightly fitting cover. Set the covered mold in the pot on a rack or trivet, and fill the pot with enough boiling water to reach halfway up the mold. Let the water boil on low continually for 1½ hours. Check the water level occasionally, adding more boiling water to maintain the level at the halfway position. Remove from the pot and unmold. Serve hot with sauce.

To make the sauce: combine the ingredients in a saucepan, bring to a boil until it becomes a thick, clear syrup.
