Our children’s clothing closet serves low-income residents who live near our Mission Center on Heritage Drive. If you would like to donate clothing to help our neighbors, we need clothes, shoes, coats, hats and gloves in all sizes from infant to teens. We also provide adults with winter coats, gloves and hats. Donations can be placed in the white wooden box under the coat rack near the bathrooms and the parlor.

The Caring Ministries team makes personal visits to AUMC members who are homebound, in a nursing or retirement home, in the hospital or at home being treated for an illness or recovering from surgery. About 30 members of AUMC are currently homebound and enjoy brief visits from church members. If you are available to make visits about once a month, contact Barbara Gordon at [email protected] or 703-300-5184. You may also contact Dottie Rogerson in the church office at [email protected] or 703-256-8330, ext. 112. The Caring Ministries team does not replace visits by AUMC’s pastors; it supplements their efforts.

Stephen Ministers are there for you: Whatever you may be going through, AUMC’s Stephen Ministers are available to talk to you so that you don’t have to walk alone. Our mission is not to “fix” you but to “listen, listen, love, love” as you heal and move forward. For more information, contact one of our clergy or Pat Sherfey at [email protected]. All conversations are confidential.

Collecting food for our neighbors in need: Please note that on the first Sunday of the month, we collect food items just inside the front doors of the church for the ACCA food pantry. On the third Sunday of the month, we collect food items for our Mission Center.

Help make sandwiches and assemble meals on Thursdays: We make sandwiches and assemble backpack meals throughout the school year. We also provide bag lunches for the Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter. If you’d like to help with our food ministry, join us at noon on Thursdays at the AUMC Mission Center (7901 Heritage Drive). Volunteers can come for all or part of the time, and there are both stand-up and sit-down jobs. We begin by making lunches for the Bailey’s shelter, then assembling the ingredients for backpack meals for local elementary schools, followed by making sandwiches for our food site. If you’d like to volunteer for the evening food distribution, plan to arrive at 4:30 p.m. to help unload food and set up. Contact Betsy Clevenger at 240-682-2067 for details about our food programs.

Poe after-school program: We’re looking for volunteers to assist with our Poe Middle School food ministry, October through May. We have four teams, and each team serves one Tuesday per month. We also need volunteers to prep food. For more information, contact Sheila Kyer at [email protected] or 703-981-6080. This is a wonderful mission, and it’s right in our community!

Help kids with their homework at the Mission Center: Volunteers serve as tutors, readers and snack coordinators, and provide administrative assistance. Tutoring is on Wednesdays in the Mission Center fellowship hall, 3:45–5:45 p.m. We provide homework assistance to students in grades 1–9. We also need people who enjoy being read to by students. To volunteer, contact Jerry Beyer at 703-399-1395.

Altar Guild volunteers needed: Would you like to become more involved with worship services at AUMC? The Altar Guild prepares the altar for Sunday services,

weddings and funerals. We are looking for volunteers for May and November. If you’d like to help, contact DeEtte Johnson, (703) 750-3448.

Share the sacrament of communion with our hospitalized or homebound members by volunteering to give communion each month to someone who is unable to attend Sunday service. For more information, contact Pat Sherfey at 703-354-9676 or [email protected].

The Jesus Story Year, 2019–2020 Our sermons in 2020 will focus on the story of Jesus. This month, we begin exploring how the gospels and epistles testify to the king who calls us as his particular people in the world.

Gathering Song: “What a Beautiful Name”You were the Word at the beginning, One with God the Lord Most High

Your hidden glory in creation now revealed in You our Christ. What a beautiful Name it is, what a beautiful Name it is

The Name of Jesus Christ my KingWhat a beautiful Name it is, nothing compares to this

What a beautiful Name it is: the Name of Jesus

You didn’t want heaven without us, so Jesus You brought heaven downMy sin was great Your love was greater. What could separate us now

What a wonderful Name it is, what a wonderful Name it isThe Name of Jesus Christ my King

What a wonderful Name it is, nothing compares to thisWhat a wonderful Name it is: the Name of JesusWhat a wonderful Name it is: the Name of Jesus

Death could not hold You, the veil tore before YouYou silence the boast of sin and grave

The heavens are roaring the praise of Your glory, for You are raised to life againYou have no rival, You have no equal. Now and forever God You reign

Yours is the kingdom, Yours is the glory, Yours is the Name above all names

What a powerful Name it is, what a powerful Name it isThe Name of Jesus Christ my King

What a powerful Name it is, nothing can stand againstWhat a powerful Name it is: the Name of JesusWhat a powerful Name it is: the Name of JesusWhat a powerful Name it is: the Name of Jesus
