“Life’s Healing Choices” small group study meets tonight at 7 p.m. in Hughes Hall. This 10-week study series uses Celebrate Recovery’s eight principles, which are based on the Beatitudes. It’s an approach to bringing into your life the transformative and healing power of Jesus Christ, God the Father and the Holy Spirit and freeing yourself from hurts, hang-ups and harmful habits. The meetings typically last 1-½–2 hours and include

breaking into men’s and women’s small groups. If you are interested, contact Harry Day, 703 298-0972 or [email protected], or Teresa Beyer, 301-221-8321 or [email protected]. Or simply come to the meeting tonight at 7 p.m.

Annual Charge Conference this week: Our annual business meeting is Thursday at 7 p.m. in Hughes Hall. The meeting will be led by District Superintendent Jeff Mickle and include reports from various ministry areas, finance and trustees. All are welcome to attend.

Hypothermia Yard Sale next Saturday! There are four ways you can help with our annual yard sale to benefit our hypothermia ministry: 1) Donate your gently used items, 2) volunteer to help with the sale, 3) tell your neighbors and friends about it, and 4) stop by and shop! The sale will be Sept. 21, 8 a.m.–1 p.m., in front of the church (or in Wright Hall if it rains). Drop off your donations at Hughes Hall, noon–8 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 20. Items that can be donated include clothing, household goods, kitchen items, small furniture, Christmas items, books, CDs and videos. Credit cards will be accepted this year. For more information and to help, contact Teresa Beyer at [email protected].

Books, books, books! If you have extra books taking up space around the house, consider donating them for the United Methodist Men’s Book Fair next Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Hughes Hall. You can leave books at the church in the wooden bin under the coatrack. Or drop books off on Sept. 20 inside the front doors of the church on the left side. Contact Jerry Beyer at 703-399-1395 for more information and to help.

Help kids with their homework at the Mission Center: Volunteers are needed to serve as tutors, readers and snack coordinators, and provide administrative assistance. Tutoring is on Wednesdays in the Mission Center fellowship hall, 3:45–5:45 p.m. We provide homework assistance to students in

grades 1–9. We also need people who enjoy being read to by students. To volunteer, contact Jerry Beyer at 703-399-1395.

Poe after-school program: Do you like to bake? Serve children? Are you available once a month? We’re looking for volunteers to assist with our Poe food ministry, October through May. We have four teams, and each team serves one Tuesday per month. We also need volunteers to bake cookies and prep food. For more information, contact Sheila Kyer at [email protected] or 703-981-6080. This is a wonderful mission, and it’s right in our community!

CROP Hunger Walk at Lake Accotink: Walk around Lake Accotink and raise money to fight hunger! This year’s walk is Oct. 19 and begins at 8 a.m. at the Lake Accotink marina. A portion of the funds raised will go to the ACCA food pantry. Information is available in the atrium.

The Jesus Story Year, 2019–2020

Our sermons for the remainder of 2019 and into 2020 will focus

on the story of Jesus. In “Walking Backwards from Emmaus: Jesus in

the Old Testament,” we’ll begin with the creation story and work our

way through the prophets to learn how the Old Testament witnesses to

Christ. Starting in January, we’ll walk forwards from Emmaus, exploring

how the gospels and epistles testify to the king who calls us as his particular

people in the world.

Disaster response? We have a team for that. To join our

Disaster Response Team (which requires a day of training),

contact Jay Morris, [email protected]. We

are also looking for a team coordinator to organize and recruit new members, maintain our inventory of equipment and serve as the point of contact with the United Methodist Church’s disaster response liaison.

Note: Flu shots won’t be available at AUMC this year. Due to changes by Inova and the fact that AUMC members would have to pay for the shots out of pocket, we have decided not to offer our clinic this year. Please check with your doctor’s office or local pharmacy about getting a shot. Most drug stores offer free flu shots to those covered by insurance.

Gathering Song: “How Can I Keep from Singing”There is an endless song, echoes in my soul: I hear the music ring

And though the storms may come, I am holding on: to the rock I cling(Repeat)

(Chorus) How can I keep from singing Your praise? How can I ever say enough, how amazing is Your love

How can I keep from shouting Your nameI know I am loved by the King, and it makes my heart (want to sing)

I will lift my eyes in the darkest night, for I know my Savior livesAnd I will walk with You, knowing You’ll see me through,

And sing the songs You give(Chorus)

I can sing in the troubled times; sing when I winI can sing when I lose my step and fall down again

I can sing ‘cause You pick me up, sing ‘cause You’re thereI can sing ‘cause You hear me Lord when I call to You in prayer

I can sing with my last breath, sing for I knowThat I’ll sing with the angels and the saints around the throne

(Chorus)

I am loved by the King, and it makes my heartI know I am loved by the King, and it makes my heart (want to sing)

Opening Prayer

Song of Praise: “Who You Say I Am”Who am I that the highest King would welcome me?

I was lost but He brought me in. Oh His love for me, oh His love for me

Who the Son sets free oh is free indeed. I’m a child of God, yes I am

Free at last; He has ransomed me. His grace runs deepWhile I was a slave to sin, Jesus died for me. Yes He died for me

Who the Son sets free oh is free indeed. I’m a child of God, yes I amIn my Father’s house, there’s a place for me. I’m a child of God, yes I am
