It was seven years ago that I started the Crescenta Valley Weekly. My vision was to

create a community newspaper that would provide pertinent unbiased information to our friends and neighbors and keep them informed of all the great things there are to see and do in the Crescenta Valley.

It has taken a lot of hard work from a bunch of dedicated people to build the CV Weekly. From photographers, writers and proofreaders who donated their expertise to friends who gave us office furniture, from readers who made it possible for my staff to have some wonderful experiences to advisers who always take my call, it has been a team effort to put the paper into the hands of thousands of our readers every week.

In addition over the years CV Weekly has introduced two other products, our annual Discover magazine, a resource guide that offers information about local events,

history and places to see, and The Finest, the magazine that presents the results of our annual readers’ poll.

Because I know what a Herculean effort it is to manage a business while striving to provide excellent service, I commend this year’s Finest, those voted by CV Weekly readers as the very best services, people and places. These are the people who focus not only on what they do, but how they can do it better. Their attention to detail paid off; over 9,000 votes were cast for the 2016 Finest – many of the vote-getters are reflected in these pages – proving that CV Weekly readers appreciate and applaud their hard work.

I don’t know of anyone who stumbles into excellence; it takes a unique combination of hard work, passion and vision to be successful. Late nights are nothing unusual. But isn’t it nice to be recognized for those efforts?

So I invite you to take a moment to get comfortable and open the pages of The Finest to learn who your friends and neighbors feel are the best in what they do. Long time La Crescenta residents, Lynn and Mary Ann were literally neighbors as kids. Mary Ann said, “I married the boy next door!” They moved into his home, and raised their three children in the same neighborhood and sent them to the same schools. STEM & ThE ArTS ThrivE AT FlinTridgE SAcrEd hEArT AcAdEMyOn August 15, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy opens for another exciting school year, particularly for our arts students. Tologs will enjoy their first full school year with the new Arts Center. The Arts Center, which was completed at the end of April, features a new theatre with professional-grade sound and lighting equipment, an expanded 3D classroom, art gallery and stagecraft space. “The new arts center supports our young artists and encourages them to explore and expand their creative potential,” said Heather Kent, visual and preforming arts department chair. “We are grateful for the continued support of our community and are proud of this building, which highlights the arts as an integral component to our young women’s education at FSHA.”

This year’s curriculum includes the continuation of two of our most successful new STEM-based courses—Honors Scientific Research and Programming I & II. Both classes were added to the curriculum last year. Taught by Dr. Liz Krider, the Honors Scientific Research class is a capstone course that focuses on biotechnology and research. With this course, students develop and conduct their own experiments and present those results to the community. Last year, five out of the ten projects selected as finalists for the Archer School for Girls STEM Symposium were by FSHA students in the Honors Scientific Research class. In the Programming classes, students learn introductory computer science concepts and basic programming language. They then use this knowledge to write short programs, design basic applications, and create computational art and simple animations through coding.

We also have a brand new Strategic Plan, An Extraordinary Vision, which will lead and guide us to 2020. Under the leadership of the Strategic Plan Committee of the Board of Directors, this plan includes a new vision statement with seven strong values that reflect that vision and five goals that set a direction for our work in the next five years—People, Program, Place, Partnerships and Presence. The initiatives laid out in An Extraordinary Vision will propel FSHA into the ever-changing educational landscape in new and exciting ways while maintaining our strong Dominican traditions.

Welcome to Franks Famous, where the food is always fresh, the associates are friendly and the catering is top notch.

Franks is a family owned and operated catering kitchen and sandwich shop, dedicated to making the freshest, best tasting food and providing the finest customer service. Owner and Chef Roger Frey graduated from California School of Culinary Arts. He and his wife Tracy (both lifetime locals) are responsible for maintaining the high standards of which Franks Famous has built their reputation.

The food they serve is always prepared from scratch using fresh quality ingredients such as real butter, cream and fresh produce. Their sandwiches are built on fresh, locally made bread where they pile on premium Boars Head brand meats and cheeses and top them with vine ripened tomatoes and fresh green leaf lettuce. We have several spreads to choose from including garlic herb mayo and the honey chipotle mayo that are made by Franks Famous kitchen staff.

Franks soups and salads are always created from the freshest produce. Their house salad is a very popular item, featuring mixed baby lettuce, dried cranberries, walnuts, grape tomatoes, parmesan and is served with their signature maple balsamic vinaigrette. Their chicken salad can be enjoyed as a salad or a sandwich. It is a delicious blend of tastes and textures that include all white meat chicken breast, chewy dried cranberries, crunchy celery, salty cashews and a small amount of diced red onion. All of their cookies are made from scratch and are baked up fresh every morning. Other sweet treats include Lemon Bars with a shortbread crust, Brownies, Cookie Bars, Chewy Pecan Bars, Magic Bars, Rice Krispy Treats and Peanut Butter Bars.

They serve Dr. Bob’s award winning ice cream, made locally in Pomona at the LA County Fairgrounds. Indulge in a scoop or two of this decadent ice cream or pick up a hand packed pint or quart to take home.

Top 10 Cruise Myths DebunkedWith an estimated 23 million cruisers in 2015 alone, the cruise industry has clearly kept up with the ever-changing demands of travelers. From large ocean liners with boardwalks and waterparks to sophisticated smaller ships with luxurious detail, the idea that there exists a one-size-fi ts-all mold applies only to the cruises of yesterday. We’ve heard all the myths about cruising and would like to clear the air – or water. Let’s throw out the stereotypes and welcome the modern world of cruising!

1. Cruises are for old people – Cruises aren’t all shu� e board and bingo. While certain cruise lines are more family friendly and others more adult focused, most are able to appeal to all ages. With trendy eateries by celebrity chefs, award-winning youth programs, swanky adult-only areas and adrenaline-pumping shore excursions, every age and lifestyle can be accommodated.

2. I’ll get seasick – Even those most prone to seasickness are surprised at how their equilibriums behave while onboard a cruise. Virtually all ships are equipped with stabilizers to minimize the rocking. If you’re still concerned, steer clear of smaller ships, book a mid-ship cabin and try remedies like acupressure bracelets and seasick patches, which can be purchased onboard.

3. Cruises are crowded – Improved design in high volume areas and increased deck space are used to comfortably accommodate passengers. Space is utilized so well, you’ll be amazed at how you can be alone on a ship with 5,000 passengers! For a

truly secluded escape, book a balcony stateroom and relax in privacy while noshing on room service – which by the way, is included.

4. I’ll feel trapped or claustrophobic – Chances are you’ll be too busy or relaxed to even notice. Think of a cruise as a fl oating resort. Royal Caribbean’s newest vessel, Harmony of the Seas, is over three football fi elds long with eighteen decks! It would take an entire week to see the ship itself. Still unsure about being at sea? Choose an itinerary with daily ports so you can wander o� the ship.

5. Cruises are boring – Modern cruises are outfi tted with numerous innovative amenities and activities. From educational experiences like port lectures and Princess Cruises’ Discovery at Sea program, to heart-pounding activities like Royal Caribbean’s 10-deck water slide or wind-tunnel skydiving, cruise lines stop at nothing to wow and entertain their guests.

6. They have regimented schedules – While cruise ships may have scheduled events and activities throughout the day, they are entirely optional. Some cruise lines still opt for the charm of grand dining rooms with set dining times, but more and more have adopted a new philosophy with additional options for passengers, like Norwegian Cruise Line’s Freestyle Cruising® which allows guests to design their own schedule.

7. The entertainment is corny – Mention cruise ship entertainment and most people envision over-the-top performers in sequined body suits and

second-rate comedians. Thankfully, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Today’s onboard entertainment includes Broadway-caliber musicals, headlining comedians and musicians, acrobats and the latest box o� ce hits.

8. Cruises only visit tourist trap ports – For the “been there, done that” traveler or one looking for something di� erent, river cruising o� ers the chance to explore smaller, intimate destinations from the comfort of a luxury liner. Float past temples along the Yangtze or stroll through cobblestone streets o� the Rhine. Other options include cultural and volunteer based cruising like Carnival Corp’s new line, Fathom.

9. Cruising is expensive – Most cruises are all-inclusive with the exception of alcohol and select activities. When you consider what’s included– accommodation, food, entertainment and transportation – the cost can end up less than a comparable hotel. To avoid surprise charges, look into alcohol and internet packages. Plus, save on travel time and expenses since the destinations come to you!

10. The lowest prices are online – Yes you can fi nd low prices on discounted travel websites, but you could miss out on key o� ers and promotions. Enlist the help of a cruise specialist to fi nd the perfect cruise for you and at no additional cost. They can leverage their relationships with cruise lines to fi nd you the best deal – and maybe even some added amenities.

raig’s Electric was started in 1987 and is owned and operated by local resident Craig Fisher. Craig was born and raised in Glendale and graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in 1979. He has very strong ties to the community. He resides in La Crescenta. His daughters, Ashley and Rachel, went through local schools and graduated from Crescenta Valley High School. He has coached and sponsored several youth sports teams and has been on the Board of Directors of the Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce for the past 20 years including serving as Treasurer for the last 17. Craig has been doing electrical

work in the community for over 39 years. He got his start at the age of 14 when he began working summers with his neighbor who was an electrical contractor. After he completed school he went into the trade full time working his way up from Helper to Journeyman to Foreman to proud company owner.
