1.0 English language proficiency requirement for Undergraduate course Applicants are required to satisfy Curtin University’s English language proficiency for undergraduate courses through one of the following ways:
1.1 Recognised Secondary qualifications with the required result The results must have been released within five years of application, with the exception of GCSE, IGCSE, GCE AS & A Level, International Baccalaureate Diploma, and approved secondary qualifications undertaken and awarded in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, Singapore, South Africa, United Kingdom and United States of America.

1.4 Tertiary degree studies taught in English outside Australia 1) Successful completion of at least one semester full-time or equivalent of an undergraduate or
postgraduate coursework degree level study at a recognised University in New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom; or
2) Successful completion of at least one year full-time or equivalent of an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree level study at a recognised University in Canada, Singapore, South Africa or United States of America; or
3) Successful completion of an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree from a recognised overseas University, assessed by Curtin University as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Bachelor or Master Degree in which Curtin University recognised English is the sole language of instruction*. The degree must have been awarded within five years of application, with the exception of qualifications undertaken and awarded in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, Singapore, South Africa, United Kingdom and United States of America.

1.5 Undertake an approved English proficiency test, refer to Section 3 for further details
1.6 Australian University English Language Bridging Program
The program must have been undertaken within two years of application, however, they may be used
for entry until the next immediate semester intake.
1) Curtin University English Language Bridging (ELB or ELB Offshore, for international applicants)
and English Language Enabling (ELE, for domestic applicants) with required score stated in Section 5. More information: http://english.curtin.edu.au/courses/language_bridging.cfm
2) Successful completion of a recognized Australian University English Language Bridging Program one semester full-time in duration:
i. To meet Curtin University’s minimum English requirements, applicants must achieve a final result comparable to at least IELTS Academic with an overall score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 at the awarding University;
ii. To meet higher English requirement (scores higher than IELTS Academic with an overall score
6.5 with no bands less than 6.0) at Curtin University, applicants must achieve the equivalent required result at the awarding institution which is comparable to the course’s specific English requirement.
1.7 Other approved English Language Courses within Australia
Successful completion of the following approved programs with the required result (if applicable) are
only accepted in meeting English requirement for Undergraduate and Postgraduate coursework
courses with minimum requirement i.e. IELTS Academic Overall 6.5 with no bands less than 6.0.
1) Navitas English, Academic English Level 3 with a minimum grade of 65% (Formerly Australian
College of English and Australian Centre for Languages);
2) Phoenix Academy, from May 2018 - Academic English Program (AEP) with Level C1 obtained;
Prior to May 2018 - Certificate IV in English for Academic Purposes (91459NSW) with a minimum
grade of COM (65%);
3) 52777WA (previously 52566WA) Certificate IV in Academic Preparation Studies;
4) UTS: Insearch Academic English Level 5 (AE5) program. (Ref: 11/16); AE 6 program is accepted
in meeting Curtin’s English requirement of IELTS 7.0 with no less than 7.0 in each band, except for
courses listed with specific requirement in Section 4.
5) Canning College, Certificate IV in University Access Program (52835WA);
6) Any RTO, 10730NAT Certification IV in Spoken and Written English for Further Study.

2.0 English language proficiency requirement for Postgraduate coursework
and Higher Degree by Research course Applicants are required to satisfy Curtin University’s English language proficiency requirement for postgraduate coursework and Higher Degree by Research courses through one of the following ways:
2.1 Tertiary degree studies undertaken in Australia Successful completion of one semester full-time (equivalent to 0.5 EFTSL) of an undergraduate or postgraduate degree level study at a recognised University in Australia.
2.2 Tertiary degree studies taught in English outside Australia
1) Successful completion of at least one semester full-time or equivalent of an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree level study at a recognised University in New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom; or
2) Successful completion of at least one year full-time or equivalent of an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree level study at a recognised University in Canada, Singapore, South Africa or United States of America; or
3) Successful completion of an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree from a recognised overseas University, assessed by Curtin University as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Bachelor or Master Degree in which Curtin University recognised English is the sole language of instruction*.

3.0 English Proficiency Test in meeting English competence requirement Important notes:
• The test must have been undertaken within two years of application, however, they may be used
for entry until the next immediate semester intake.
• The results from multiple English language proficiency tests will not be combined to meet the
required standard.
• The required scores stated in the following table will satisfy Curtin’s minimum English language
proficiency requirement for Undergraduate, Postgraduate coursework and Higher degree by
research (HDR) courses. Some courses have specific and higher English requirement, refer to
Section 4 for details.
• IELTS (Academic) requirement changed to Overall 6.0 with no band less than 6.0 to the
following courses for a trial period of three years until 2021 (currently under review):
- Bachelor of Commerce (except Double Degrees);
- Bachelor of Business Administration;
- Engineering UG and PG degrees by coursework (except Double Degrees);
- Bachelor of Technology (Computer Systems and Networking);
- Bachelor of Science (Actuarial Science);
- Bachelor of Science (Science).

Where only the Written English component was taken, results are valid for two years from the date of testing, however maybe used for entry until the next immediate semester intake.
Malaysian University English Test (MUET) Band 4 is required to meet IELTS 6.0 (6.0); Band 4 and no less than 200 in aggregate score is required to meet IELTS 6.5 (6.0); Band 5 is required to meet IELTS 7.0 (7.0).
Germany DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst)
B2 (4 stars) in meeting minimum English (i.e. IELTS 6.5 with no band less than 6.0); or with C 1 (5 stars) in meeting higher English criteria.

1) Successful completion of an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree awarded by a recognised University in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, Singapore, South Africa, United Kingdom or the United States of America; or
2) achieve the required result from one of the following English language proficiency tests, the test must have been undertaken within two years of application, however, they may be used for entry until the next immediate semester intake; or
- IELTS Academic; - PTE Academic; - TOEFL iBT; - OET.
3) achieve the required score in the Curtin English Language Bridging (ELB) program, exception

Note 2 for Master of Teaching: From 2020 Admission, in order to meet the English language proficiency requirement for Master of Teaching, applicants are required to present one of the following:
1) Successful completion of at least one year full-time or equivalent of an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree level study at a recognised University in Australia; or
2) successful completion of an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree level study at a recognised University in New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom, Canada, Singapore, South Africa or the United States of America. The duration of this degree must be at least one year full-time or equivalent study; or
3) achieve the required result from one of the following English language proficiency tests, the test must have been undertaken within two years of application, however, they may be used for entry until the next immediate semester intake:
