Compiled materials to integrate critical thinking and information literacy into the COM 110 curriculum for the revised General Education Program, Spring, 2004 through Summer 2005.

Produced a video-tape of example group presentations (Paparazzi) based on

course criteria (with Cheri Simonds, Brent Simonds, Ryan Kurtz, Kate Magsman, Anne Bradford, Lauren Boukas, and Alexis Valianos), Spring 2004. Produced a video-tape of example speeches (Roman Coliseum) based on course criteria (with Cheri Simonds, Brent Simonds, and Carla Beck), Fall 2002. Compiled and adapted additional materials (including Portfolio Materials, Student Self-Evaluation Options, revised Instructor Evaluation forms) that were incorporated into the Language and Communication Student Workbook (with Cheri Simonds), Spring 2002. Produced a video-tape of example speeches (Tornadoes) based on course criteria (with Cheri Simonds, Brent Simonds, and Todd Zessin), Fall 2001.

Prepared new readings for the COM 110 text (The Art of Public Speaking by Stephen Lucas). Supplemental readings were selected and edited by course directors, Summer 2000. Developed a Peer Mentor Program designed to better facilitate the effective socialization of incoming GTAs to the Department of Communication and

teaching COM 110. Peer Mentors were carefully selected (based on observations and student evaluations) and trained to participate in the program, Fall 2000.2

Compiled and updated materials (including Portfolio Materials, Student Self- Evaluation Options, revised Instructor Evaluation Forms) that were incorporated into the Language and Communication Student Workbook, Fall 1999. E. Out-of-Class Work with Students

F. Experimental Work in Instruction (The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning—SoTL) Tested the effects of new political engagement instruction on student learning in the School of Communication, Fall 2006 to Spring 2010. Supervised pilot New York Times readership program (a four week pilot that involved integrating the Times into several courses in the School of Communication), Spring 2007. Tested the effects of new critical thinking and information literacy instruction on student learning in COM 110, Spring and Fall 2005. Tested the effects of reading objectives and participation sheets on student engagement, motivation, and learning in COM 110 (with Cheri Simonds and Allison Rattenborg), Fall 2002. Developed a training program to prepare GTAs to use standardized criteria to evaluate student speeches (with Cheri Simonds). As a part of a graduate student thesis (Jennifer Stitt), this training program was tested empirically and shown to reduce grade inflation as well as increase grade fidelity across instructors and sections, Fall 2000.
