INEGI
INEGI is an interface Institution between University and Industry, oriented to the activities of Research and Development, Innovation and Technology Transfer. It was founded in 1986, as an organization to empower the relationship between the University of Porto and National Industry on mechanical engineering and in-dustrial management knowledge fields.
Through its 25 years of existence INEGI has developed and consolidated its position as an honoured Industry partner, through its participation in R&D under con-tract and consulting projects. Being a nonprofit private association and recognized as being of public utility, INEGI is currently considered an active agent playing a significant role in the development of the Portuguese industry, and in the transformation of its competitive model.
MISSION
Contribute to the increase of the competitiveness of the national industry, through Research and Development, Technology Transfer and Training, in the fields of en-gineering design, materials, production technology, energy and environment and industrial management.
VISIONTo be recognized as a National reference Institution in technology based innovation and technology transfer area and became a relevant player in the European Sci-entific and Technological System.

ACTIVITY FIELDS
■ Private financed R&D: a growing part of INEGI’s ac-tivity comes from contracts with companies, for Re-search and Development projects, namely with the purpose of developing new products or processes.
■ Scientific and technology consulting: support to companies in the scientific and technologic fields, in the domain of INEGI’s activity, namely in the fields of Engineering, Products Design, Technologic Pro-cesses and Industrial Management.
■ Specialized Training: tailor-made “in-company” training programmes, highly specialized.
Beyond its scientific and technologic activities, INEGI has also been supporting the creation of Spin-Off com-panies, formed with the purpose of the commercial exploitation of technologies developed in the Institute.
Its Mission is materialized through the development of R&D and Innovation projects, under 5 main types of contracts:
■ Knowledge Creation and Technologic Development, normally financed through Scientific and Techno-logic Research Programmes, as the ones promoted by the “National Foundation for Science and Tech-nology” and European Commission.
■ R&D with companies, co-financed by Industry De-velopment support programmes: a significant part of the Institute’s activity consists in the development of R&D projects in partnership with companies, co-financed by Portuguese and European Industry De-velopment Support Programmes, in particular in the scope of PRIME Program and the Sixth Framework Program from the EU.

GOVERNANCE MODEL
A Board consisting of five members governs INEGI, three of them are Private Members’ representatives and two from the University of Porto. This model ensures a governance consistent with its position as an institution dedi-cated to economic and social valorisation of knowledge and technology. The current INEGI governing bodies were elected in 2010 for the biennium 2010-2011. Its composition is as follows:

ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE
In 2010 a new organisational structure was implemented focused on creating three pillars of activity expertise: Re-search, Innovation & Technology Transfer and Consulting & Services. The executive management was changed with the creation of an Executive Committee based on four elements. A Scientific Committee was also established to sup-port the management of research activity.
The organisational structure has a strong matrix model influence. Its basis has a set of specialized units by type of science and technology area, supporting the research activity. The RTD (Research and Technology Development) and Consulting activity works across all specialized units oriented to business solutions development.
This organisational structure is particularly adjusted to innovation and development projects whose technological com-plexity requires multidisciplinary knowledge and skills integration. The scientific and technological units are grouped into two units within FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology. New Technologies and Advanced Production Pro-cesses Unit (NOTEPAP) and Experimental Mechanics and New Materials Unit (EXPMAT) are the base of Investigation Pillar at the Institute.
INEGI is a Research Unit of the LAETA - Laboratory for Energy, Transport and Aviation, which also integrates the In-stitute of Mechanical Engineering - Pole IST, the Institute of Mechanical Engineering - Polo FEUP, the IST Centre for Science and Technology Aeronautics and Space Industrial and the Aeronautical Laboratory of the University of Coimbra.
The Institute also maintains privileged relations with other research units including CEsA - Centre for Wind Energy and Atmospheric Flows and CEFT - Centre for the Study of Transport Phenomena, both based at FEUP.

HUMAN RESOURCES
INEGI has a workforce of 248 people, which approxi-mately 29% are university staff who work in part-time, under the protocols between the University and the Institute. Its own staff is composed by 155 employees, about 59% have a work contract and the remaining 41% are active in R & D under contract Research Scholar-ships awarded from the Fundação para a Ciência e Tec-nologia (FCT ) or under the R & D projects co-financed by the QREN programme.

INEGI has a workforce composed by three main cat-egories of employees that meet the Institute needs for its core activity areas. The contract workforce en-sures a dynamic response to the business client needs and researchers trainees support activities in research projects under university and internal staff orienta-tion. The university staffs are mostly researchers from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, FEUP (Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto). How-
ever, INEGI also counts with the regular participation from other FEUP departments, from other faculties of the University of Porto and other universities and polytechnics. The Institute is also home for graduate students from the university, technology courses and students who intend to start on scientific and techno-logical activities.

INEGI has been developing a group of competences, fundamental to an economy oriented to innovation and tech-nologic intensity of products and processes, such as technology auditing and innovation management, either on a company level, or on a larger basis as sectorial or regional level.
Knowledge creation and technology development included in INEGI’s activities cover almost every area of Me-chanical Engineering and Industrial Management.

The area of Energy Management and the Environment was established in late 2004 and sales have a significant activities, including providing advice on the area of energy management and environmental auditing and development of technology-based solutions.

INEGI is housed in a partnership boosted by SRE - Soluções Racionais de Energia, SA, which also includes the INETI - National Institute of Engineering Technol-ogy and Innovation for development of power sources based on fuel cells and solutions to containerisation and distribution hydrogen. In 2005, developed power sup-plies for low power (up to 500W) based on fuel cell pow-er systems for portable and mobile. After three years of work was launched by the SRE first product in the global market, a power supply 100W designated HW 125.

HARMONACInspection and Supervision of HVAC SystemsHarmonAC project addresses the practical issues aris-ing from the need of periodic inspections of air con-ditioning systems with an output exceeding 12 kW, as indicated by the European Directive for Energy Perfor-mance of Buildings - Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). The main objective of HarmonAC is to provide a database on the potential energy savings and reduction in carbon emissions achieved through different aspects of inspection procedures for systems A/C, as well as cost and time required for them.
EDENDevelopment of New EnergiesThe EDEN project aims to boost the overall creation of a national technology platform that enables the maxi-mization of opportunities for the national economy and technology, resulting from the emergence of the Hydro-gen Economy. This is a project led by SRE - Rational Energy Solutions and with the participation of other entities of SCTN, INETI and STIs, and other companies with interests in the energy sector.

WIND POWER
Since its foundation, the Institute of Mechanical Engi-neering and Industrial Management (INEGI) has taken an important role in the study of non-conventional energy sources and in the field of energy savings and rational use.
Through the involvement in the study of wind energy and its applications, INEGI intends to support the de-velopment of renewable energy technologies, contribut-ing to the diversification of energy sources for electric-ity production and to the environmental preservation.
Since 1991 INEGI has a team especially devoted to wind energy. Beyond the planning and conduction of wind resource assessment campaigns INEGI offers nowadays several other services related with the topic.
Among others are wind farm productivity calculations and layout optimization, technical and economical fea-sibility studies, support in the preparation of call for tenders and in the licensing process, evaluation of ten-der offers and comparison of solutions, wind turbines performance evaluation and warranty verifications, due diligences, project evaluation for finance institutions and supporting officials in territory planning actions.
In a first stage restricted to the North and Centre re-gions of Portugal the activities of INEGI in the wind en-ergy domain have been extended to all the Portuguese territory and, since 1999, to foreign countries.
Taking advantage of the experience gathered in the par-ticipation of its collaborators in international projects, INEGI adopted methodologies and techniques that enable the Institute to offer to its clients high level ser-vices. Being in contact with similar institutes and spe-cialists from whole Europe, and through the presence in international conferences, workshops and seminars, INEGI wants to be aware about new developments and updated in technologies and knowledge.

Predicting Wind Energy ProductionIn the form of contract with a group of complementary businesses (EPREV - ENERNOVA, Finerge, GALP En-ergy, Generg, EDF EN, TECNEIRA and TELENER - in a consortium), this project has as partners, in addition to INESC-Institute for Systems and Computer Engi-neering, the FEUP - Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, the ICAT - Institute of Applied Science and Technology and IM - Institute of Meteorology. The aim of this project is to develop models for forecasting the production of electricity from a wind energy base.

METHODOLOGIES AND TOOLS FOR PRODUCT DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT
INEGI competences in product development range from initial idea and concept to full system develop-ment, prototyping and production planning. For that, the Institute develops innovative methodologies and has technological tools that allow it to perform this activity with the necessary efficiency, creativity, oper-ability and quality. In that sense, INEGI uses different computer assisted design tools (Solidworks, Unigraph-ics, Catia V5), as well as a software for finite element structural analysis and productive project simulation. The Institute also uses rapid prototyping and tooling technologies, among others.

The project focused on the processes development for obtaining washbasins and taps in new materials using unconventional methods such as natural stone bonded with resins, natural coconut fibber bonded with resins and conventional concrete. The project results allowed the company to sell two washbasins models in white and gray concrete and is about to start the commercialization of sinks in natural coconut fibber bonded with resin.
The Chicago Athenaeum awarded the designer Carlos Aguiar with the GOOD DESIGN 2010, at “Bath and Accessories” category, for the work developed with this project.
GREENBENDER

This project’s main goal is the full integration of ecode-sign practices in the design and development of a bender machine. This machine is intended to be the reference for ecodesign implementation in the tool machine in-dustry, assuming the competitive advantages inherent in a new product development. Anticipating the entry of tool machines in the list of Energy-using Products (EuP). This project is considering the European Com-mission rules to implement the Ecodesign Directive.

AUTOMOBILE AND TRANSPORTS
The Composite materials field is one of the most important pillars of INEGI’s activity. The Institute has unique as-sets and capabilities in Portugal and even internationally in this field, with an extensive laboratory infrastructure, technical resources for the development of new materials, products and processes and a highly qualified team. The capabilities and competencies of INEGI are particularly relevant to the automotive and transport.
ELECTRIC BUS
RTD Project co-promotion, co-funded by QREN.
Partners: CaetanoBus, EFACEC, PAUL, CONTRAC and INEGI
Answering to the new mobility needs and expecta-tions of its partners and customers, CaetanoBus returned in 2010 to the electric bus development, with the project Caetano 2500EL, assuming a viable and potential growing demand.
This project follows the Government’s plan Mobi.E (national electrical mobility project) to the creation of a charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in Por-tugal and the investment in renewable energy sources.
INEGI assumes a relevant role in the project, devel-oping components in composite materials to reduce vehicle weight, making it more efficient and increasing autonomy. The bus has a capacity for 70 passengers, autonomy for more than 100 km and 4 hours fast recharge time.

LITEBUS
Modular Lightweight Sandwich BusIs a project of the 6th Framework Program of the Eu-ropean Commission led by INEGI. In this project, researchers seek to develop a new technology for the production of passenger buses and banks using new materials.
The development of this technology to production ar-eas that involve the design, material corrosion, resist-ance, repair or environmental impact of materials to be used. The project, which began in October 2006 and was extended for 3 years, counts with the participation of Italdesign, PUK, Oxford University, CIMNE, UPM, Polymer, KTH and Caetano Bus.
TURBOCHARGERS
Development and implementation of foundry pro-cesses for turbochargers impellers
In partnership with ZOLLERN, INEGI has developed a foundry process under vacuum for turbochargers for automobile applications, using foundry technol-ogy in plaster molding with silicon moulds. The final purpose was the establishment of a new industrial unit in ZOLLERN, which began in December 2006, able to produce 1.000.000 turbochargers/year in aluminium. Under the present partnership a new manufacturing process for turbocharger impellers in titanium alloys is also being developed. This project comprises the development of melting and pouring technologies for titanium alloys, in ceramic moulds, to obtain high per-formance impellers.

INEGI’S Participation in Aeronautics and Space Engineering research and development has grown consistently in recent years and is mainly focused on Composite Materials, Experimental Mechanics and Product Development.
UAV
Unmanned civil aviation system development
The development of the civil aviation unmanned system involves three components. The first is the production of an aircraft with approximately 5 meters in wingspan and a length of 3.5 m (most of the structure built in composite materials which will design a vehicle lighter and more reliable). The second is the development and application of various sensors on the aircraft allowing image capture or temperature and position data, among others. The third the design and development of ground control systems that will allow tasks scheduling, remote control of the aircraft and reception of data during the aircraft missions. There are 12 entities involved in this project both of them included in the Portuguese In-dustrial Aerospace Consortium (PAIC): INEGI, Active Space Technologies, CeNTI, Critical Software, EDIS-OFT, Empordef, Ibermoldes, legs, FCI, Spin.Works, and Skysoft Tekever.

DEAM
Development of an European Ablative Material for Heatshields of Sample Return Missions
The project, which involves the HPS Portugal (leader), INEGI, EADS-Astrium (France) and Lockheed Martin INSYS (UK), aims to develop a new material for thermal protection systems for atmospheric re-entry vehicles. The goal is to develop a material resistant to very high tem-peratures to be used in the next ESA mission to Mars.
NACO
Nanocomposites Project
Aproved by the end of 2006 under the GSTP (General Support and Technology Program of ESA), the project NACO - Non-conventional matrix/carbon nanotube composites, research the use of composites in organic and inorganic matrix reinforced with carbon nanotubes.
The project is led by HPS in Germany and with the participation of Austrian Research Centers, Carbon Future, EADS, Pieper, among other companies and institutes. The interventions of the INEGI are concen-trated at the beginning of the project, with a review of the state of the art, and end with testing performances for characterization of nanocomposites.
CASAM
Civil Aircraft Security Against MANPADS
The main purpose of CASAM project is the develop-ment of a system to detect and misguide portable mis-siles from terrorist attacks (MANPADS) to civil air-crafts. The missile detection will be made by using an optical system with sensors able to detect infrared rays’ emission by the missile propulsor. This is an optic-me-chanical system of high precision and with very tight requirements in terms of weight and stability.

AUTONOMOUS SUBMARINE DEVELOPMENT
INEGI collaborates, since 1999, in development of autonomous submarines (AUVs and ROVs) with the Laboratory for Underwater Systems and Technolo-gies (LSTS) Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR) a research unit hosted at the University of Porto. This long term collaboration aimed at developing a family of underwater autonomous vehicles and monitoring systems. In it, INEGI’s role is the design and develop-ment, production and integration of all mechanical and structural solutions for the vehicles, while ISR’s activity is linked to the electrical and electronic systems, soft-ware and vehicle control and mission planning.
WAVE ENERGY CONVERSION SYSTEM
INEGI was responsible for the development of the very large shaft-bushing system which is integrated in the design of the wave energy conversion project WAVE at Martifer. In this project INEGI and Martifer imple-mented a full systems’ engineering approach which al-lowed systematic selection of candidate architectures and definition of functional requirements for system design and bushing development. In parallel with the shaft-bushing design work packages INEGI was also in-volved in the testing of materials, development of test systems and laboratory testing of specific subsystems.

SEA ECONOMY
Portugal has a strong connection to the sea. This connection comes from history and culture, and the economic and social dimension has evolved over the years.
The sea is a place for discovery, work, business and leisure. The sea exploitation is important for the areas of health, fisheries, shipbuilding industries, shipping transports and energy. It’s a source that has a significant economic value, through the modernization and innovation of the so-called traditional maritime activities, or through the emergence of new economic activities with high value added (biotechnology, energy, robotics, etc.).
This project, which pushed INEGI’s capacities for de-sign, prototyping, manufacturing and mechanical test-ing delivered the first nAUV (new Autonomous Under-water Vehicle) in 2005 and saw, in 2006, the delivery of the first Remotely Operated underwater Vehicle (ROV).

Oceanographic Observatory. This project is the result of a common strategy assumed by the two regions northwest of Iberia (Portugal and Spain) achieving a deep knowledge of the ocean.
INEGI has 2 main goals on this project:

HEALTH CARE
INEGI has a set of capabilities with high potential for application in the health sector. This is a fast growing sector and INEGI has been researching in this area. INEGI is working within the consortium that developed the diagnos-tic technologies for clinical trials and clinical diagnostics. The Institute is also investing on new materials research for medical applications and is developing technologies for prostheses production and medical implants.
CLEARPEM-SONIC
RTD Project em co-promoted, co-founded by QREN.
Partners: PETsys, CERN, Crystal Clear Collaboration, LIP, IPO-Porto, TagusParque, IBEB, IBILI, INOV, IN-ESC-ID e INEGI.
ClearPEM-Sonic is a technology-based PET scanner (Positron Emission Tomography) developed by the con-sortium and has been successfully installed at CHU - Ho-pital Nord Marseille’s Radiology Department, France. This equipment will perform medical tests to detect breast cancer in the French hospital for two years seeking to prove their technical skills in a clinical environment.
In this project INEGI was responsible for design and as-sembly of the machine, the mechanical components of the PET detectors and its temperature control system. INEGI also integrated the equipment components devel-oped by other partners.
PROSTHESES AND MEDICAL IMPLANTS
INEGI has a strategic internal research project for cas-ting titanium alloys. The aim is to develop technologies and knowledge to provide capacity to the Institute for processing titanium alloys for medical implants and prostheses.
The tailor made production of prostheses from images obtained by medical imaging equipment. The images are transformed into engineering models in order to be modeled and to implement the solutions on the pa-tients. The engineering computer models are then ma-terialized in titanium alloy prostheses.
