    It was established as the capital of thefirst American colony by Spain by thebrother of Christopher Columbus.

    It was originally named Nueva Isabelain

    honor of the queen who financed the firstvoyage of Columbus.

    History Although Christopher Columbus is most often givencredit for discovering the island of Hispaniola(Little Spain) in 1492, it is known to have beenvisited many centuries earlier.

    Around 2600 B.C., a mostly nomadic people rode theocean currents in canoes from South America to theAntilles.

    Another group of visitors called the Arawaks cameto Hispaniola around the year 250 B.C.

    This is known because artifacts that arecharacteristic of each culture were found on theisland.

    The exportation of pinewood has also led to anincreased threat for the woodland areas of thecountry.

    extinction.

    History The Tano (friendly people) Indians came to theDominican Republic from Venezuela about 2,000years ago.

    They were experts in fishing and farming, and

    were devout worshipers and skilled artists. About 400,000 of them lived on Hispaniola whenColumbus landed.

    The Tainos were eventually made to build Spainsnewest empire, but poor working conditions and

    European diseases all but wiped out these peopleand their culture.
