About the patternThis sock pattern is knit from the top down and features stylized textured cubes using a combination of garter stitch, decreases, and yarnover increases. Shown in Koigu Painters Palette Premium Merino, a special colorway created in conjunction with the dyers at Koigu, they recall the colors used in some of Picasso’s cubist paintings.

CuffCast on 64 stitches. Being careful not to twist, join for working in the round. Work Cable Chart.

LegWork 3 vertical repeats of Leg Chart. To shorten leg of sock, work fewer vertical repeats.

Heel flapPlace the next 33 stitches on hold for the top of foot. Heel flap is worked over remaining (previous) 31 stitches. Turn work so that wrong side is facing and work Heel Flap chart back and forth, repeating last 2 rows, until heel flap measures 2¼ inches, ending ready to work a right side row.

Turn heelContinue working back and forth using short rows to turn heel.

Row 1 (right side): Slip 1, k17, ssk, k1, turn.

Row 2 (wrong side): Slip 1, p6, p2tog, p1, turn.

Row 3: Slip 1, knit to gap caused by turn on previous row, ssk (using one stitch from each side of gap), k1, turn.

Row 4: Slip 1, purl to gap caused by turn on previous row, p2tog (using one stitch from each side of gap), p1, turn.

Repeat last 2 rows until all heel stitches have been worked, ending ready to work a right side row. 19 heel stitches.

Shape gussetsResume working in the round as follows: Slip 1 purlwise with yarn in back, k9. Mark beginning of round. Knit remaining heel stitches, pick up and knit into each slipped stitch along edge of heel flap, make 1, mark right side of foot, work Top of Foot chart across held stitches, mark left side of foot, make 1, pick up and knit into each slipped stitch along edge of heel flap, knit to end of round.

Right and left side markers divide foot into top of foot section (previously held stitches) and sole. Decrease 2 sole stitches every other round as follows:

Round 1: Knit to 2 stitches before right side of foot, k2tog, work Top of Foot chart, ssk, knit to end of round. 2 stitches decreased.

Round 2: Knit to right side of foot, work Top of Foot chart, knit to end of round.

Repeat last 2 rounds until 66 stitches remain.

FootContinue working even, without decreasing sole stitches, until foot measures 2 inches less than desired length from back of heel turn. 72 stitches — 36 top of foot stitches and 36 sole stitches.

Knit to right side of foot. This is the new beginning of round.

ToeDecrease 4 stitches every other round as follows.

Round 1: Knit to end of round.

Round 2: K1, ssk, knit to 3 stitches before left side of foot, k2tog, k2 (one stitch before and one stitch after left side of foot marker), ssk, knit to 3 stitches before right side of foot, k2tog, k1. 4 stitches decreased.

Repeat last 2 rounds until foot measures desired length, ending after a decrease round. Graft top of foot stitches to sole stitches using Kitchener stitch. Weave in ends and block.
