No doubt many of you will have seen the arrival of the three large planters at the entrances to the village! These are part of our preparation for the 2012 Jubilee and festival celebrations. Thanks to a hardy bunch of folks, the planters were positioned, lined and filled with soil ready for their first batch of seasonal flowers (due very soon)

The team worked really hard for 4 hours, and when they are finally finished, the planters will welcome people entering our village with blooms of colour. Some of the ‘crew’ are pictured here. Thank you to everyone who helped out on the day - hope you all claimed the correct wheelbarrows!

Editorial

Welcome to this the very first issue of the Nocton Doodle, the new magazine for everyone in Nocton. I will start by saying a big thank you to All Saint’s Church for the production of a parish magazine for Nocton for over 100 years. It has been a great service to church and to the community at large. However over the last two years the magazine has become very much a community magazine with contributions from many members and groups within the village. It is therefore now right to change the publication from being one tied to a particular organisation into a publication independent of any. This is what the Nocton Doodle will aim to be at all times. Hopefully it will continue the increase of readership throughout our community from The Heath to Wasps Nest, via paper and electronic media.

We should be proud at this time that as a community we are in a position in which groups working together as one, have found a bright new future for this, our village. To see beyond our own particular interests, and realise that as our village continues to break out of the historic shackles of its estate heritage, we all now need a future as well as a past is not always easy. It is however essential.

Sometimes it’s difficult to identify where we should be cooperating, but I would like to suggest that at this time preparation for the 2012 Nocton Festival and support for Nocton School would seem two areas where we can make a difference.

‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ is a well used expression but how true it was when first used and how true it still is today. We help ourselves by helping each other. Let’s put it into practice, here and now.

Parish Council Report — Tuesday November 1st 2011

‘New Look” Parish Council holding onto ‘Old and Trusted’ values.

The Vice-Chair, Councillor Ian Goldsworthy, presided over the meeting in the absence of the Chair, Councillor Tyler, and Councillor MaryAnn Williams took the minutes on behalf of our clerk Doreen Green, both of whom were taking well earned holidays!

Tuesday saw the first use of the new style of Agenda and Minutes for Nocton Parish Council, suffice to say there were no public questions submitted prior to the meeting and none from the floor, hopefully a sign of growing confidence in the top table! Village Hall Cllr Askew, on behalf of the VH Management Committee, reported there were real concerns over the suspected continued subsidence of one corner of the Hall. In view of the seriousness of the situation and the importance of our Village Hall to the community, Parish Cllrs and members of the VH Management Committee will meet as soon as possible to consider the options and agree a way forward. B1188 and B1202 Some good and not so good news on our village road situation. Alan Brown from LCC Highways has written to the PC and is actioning most of the problems highlighted on the recent village walk-round. However, despite the fact that accidents have increased on the B1188 (the only red route where this has happened), at the moment nothing is going to be done to address this. Cllr Marianne Overton (District) and the rest of the Parish Councils in our Cluster Group are all working hard to keep this high on Highways Department’s agenda. The other positive is that Highways will be asked to monitor the traffic through the village, probably towards the end of the month, to ascertain exactly how many vehicles pass through, how big, how heavy and how fast. It is hoped that the results of this survey will help us take action to deal with the problems of traffic through the village. Diamond Jubilee Mugs Commemorative Mugs will be presented by the Parish Council to all the children in the parish. A form will be circulated to each household in the New Year, so that each child is counted and also to give people the opportunity to purchase these mugs at a competitive price. 200 Club See application and poster. A real opportunity to help our village and hopefully be a winner as well! Cllr Overton was delighted to see that Nocton is doing so much to encourage self help, as funding and help in the wider community continues to dry up. Day Centres in Lincolnshire are making our village get- togethers even more important. Proceeds from the 200 Club will help to support developments in the village. Crime Metal theft in Lincolnshire is increasing and is high priority for the policet. We are all asked to be vigilant and report anything suspicious. Play Park Councillor Neil Faulkner was concerned that the provision of an infant play park in the centre of the village may well not be addressed for a further 3 or 4 years. However, if indications are that this facility is needed sooner rather than later, then the Parish Council will progress this project more quickly.

Finally, a warm welcome from the Parish Council to the “Nocton Doodle”

Date of next meeting: Tuesday 6th December at 7pm. (Cllr MaryAnn Williams)

From David Glew

At the annual presentation evening of the cricket club, at the end of the season, a buffet and a raffle were enjoyed by all. Thanks were given to the various officers of the club, for their work over the last year. The following awards were made, and presented by Mrs Sheila Redshaw:

Batsman : Dylan Garfoot Bowler : Dylan Garfoot

Most promising : Dylan Garfoot All-rounder : Mikey Atkinson Most improved : Sam Allison

Fielder : Edward Dowler Junior : Miles Lynch

Ducks : Roy Bates & Mikey Atkinson President's Cup : Matthew Stephens

Clubman's Cup : David Glew

The wickets have been repaired in readiness for 2012, and a large heap of soil is ready to fill the inevitable rabbit holes and mole runs next April. That just leaves the players to reflect on their achievements of this last season, and dream of improvements for next season !

Congratulations to Polly Hardy and Chris Hyde on their wedding at All Saint’s Church, Nocton on Saturday 12th November at 1pm. The sun shone and the church bells rang as ‘Mr and Mrs Hyde’ set off in a VW camper van to the Dovecote at Swinderby for their reception. Revd Dee Freeman officiated and James White played the organ. Andrew Hyde read ‘The Book of Love by Stephin Merrit and Jennie Freeman read 1 Corinthians chapter 13.

After an unopposed election for the vacant Parish Council seat, Geoff Hall has been elected and will take up his seat from 16th Nov. The Photographic Morning on the 5th November was most constructive with lots of good ideas being discussed. A recent graduate in Graphic Design will be joining the team producing the Church Guide Book. The next meeting on Saturday the 12th November will most likely have passed by the time that you read this. We will have had two of the proposed mornings and it has been decided that we will not meet again until after the New Year. All participants will be kept informed.

The building of our new extension is now well underway! The build is on target and due to finish before Christmas which will give staff the opportunity to ‘move in’ before they finish for the Christmas holiday.

We are extending and building a brand new classroom at the back of the school. It will also consist of a new layout with flexible space to allow for the learning needs of the different age groups, giving us a larger Early Years and Key Stage 1 classroom. The external new stone work is entirely in keeping with the 1869 building which was originally designed by leading architect Sir George Gilbert Scott who also designed the very grand Midland St Pancras Hotel and the Albert Memorial in London amongst others. If you were familiar with the way

the back of the building used to look you may notice that the stone work of the very large original window has been moved to its new position!

The builders have worked very hard to keep disruption to a minimum and staff have been wonderful at managing the upheaval. The children, of course, have found it all very exciting! However, nothing hinders our pupils! On 9 November four girls and three boys from years 5 and 6 went to Branston

Academy to take part in their annual High 5 Netball Tournament. Despite the fact we haven’t even a court to practice on due to the ongoing building work and the team had not actually had a practice together we only lost one game overall to the team who actually won the whole tournament! Three of our players were mentioned for excellent play and Emily Brown was awarded for Player of the Tournament. Well done to them all!

Nocton Church is closed at present so instead of our usual Remembrance Day Service, on 11 November our older children went across to the churchyard to lay wreaths on the graves of Corporal George Leary and Group Captain Gilbert Insall who received the Victoria Cross during WWI. The memorials of Group Captain Insall and his wife have been officially adopted by year 6 who now maintain their graves throughout the year.

Committee Gets the Thumbs Up.

Thursday 10th November saw a very lively and at times contentious AGM at the Nocton Social Club. The record of the current committee was challenged by members who believe their views and values were being ignored. The current committee after presenting a financial statement and demonstrating that the more stable than it has been for many years was re-elected with all officers remaining in post. Current chair Glen Studd was re-elected by 48 votes to 18.

A change to the constitution was approved allowing members to submit questions to the committee at the AGM with out prior notice form the 2010 AGM.

Over half the 106 adult membership either turned up in person or submitted proxy votes.

Doreen Green as licensee acted as an independent adjudicator during the counting of votes which were all held by secret ballot.

Chair Glenn Studd said “the committee had a lot of work to do in the coming year and a refurbishment of the club was something the new committee would be considering”.

Officers: Chair: Glenn Studd Vice-Chair: Stuart York Treasurer: Carolin Cunningham Secretary: Dawn Studd Committee: David Hardy, Carol Jackson, Stuart Saunby, Chris Hewitt, Chrissie Hewitt, Simon Vicary, Alison Vicary, Neil Summers, Jo Green, Frazer Cockerell.

Church Architect

There has been a lull in the actual

building work, as the temporary roof and scaffolding have needed to be moved from the chancel at the east end, to the first half of the nave, towards the west end. The finished roof tiles of the chancel should be visible to view by the time you read this note, although they are waiting for their ridge tiles. The internal scaffolding has been removed in time for the wedding on 12 November, and this has revealed the cleaned and painted chancel ceiling, now illuminated by new lighting which, taken all together, look wonderful ! By the end of the month, the temporary roof over the nave should be in place, so that the removal of those roof tiles can be started. This will allow the nave roof structure to be inspected by English Heritage, and the batman !

The only consideration is that you will be named!! Go on have a go and lets see what you can come

No colour please, just a pen or pencil style drawing — after all it is a doodle!!!

I have been asked by a villager to put in a polite reminder to all dog owners to please clean up any mess they make. This particular villager slipped and hurt her back. It is a serious issue along with potential health hazards!!!!
