benezer! This is how far the Lord has brought

us.The period of 40 years is significant in a Enumber of religions and cultures, including

Christianity:

40 years is seen as the end of one generation and the

beginning of another. Life, it is often said, begins at 40!

King David ruled Israel for 40 years and so did his son,

Solomon. Moses was 40 years old when he decided to

visit his Hebrew brethren and he had to spend 40 years

in Midian, being prepared to be used by God to deliver

the people of Israel out of Egypt. Afterwards, he

wandered 40 years in the wilderness with them.

Indeed the number 40 seems to symbolize waiting,

preparation and probation. There are often 40 days of

mourning for the dead (when it is believed that the spirit

uses this period to disengage itself from the physical)

and 40 days of fasting and prayer is seen to be the

ultimate gesture of submission to God.

This edition of the CSUC newsletter is a compilation of

events surrounding the celebration of the 40-year

journey of an institution whose proprietor is the Lord

Jesus Christ himself. It publicly celebrates the goodness

of our proprietor these past 40 years; it celebrates the

preparatory stage he has taken us through, and enjoins

us to expectantly look forward to the next 40 years in

anticipation of increased prosperity: in material things:

- yes; but more so and more importantly in our

relationship and identity as a Christian institution. It

should spur us on to renew our identity, to 'stay forever

young' even as we grow; and realize our vision of being sta 1 class Evangelical Christian University which trains

its products to be people with moral uprightness and

academic excellence; and who possess a passion to

serve and transform society. We have thus 'renewed' our

logo to better symbolize our renewed commitment to

'Make Christ better and to make Him better known'.

A big 'thank you' to all who have been with us and diversely supported us in our mission of being an academic excellence for teaching, research and service, within an evangelical and sound ethical environment; an institution of 'Faith, Scholarship and Integrity', upholding its core values of the Lordship of Jesus Christ, Integrity, Hard work, Good Stewardship and Mutual Support and Care.

The mercies of the Lord will endure forever. Arise! Come join us if you are not already a part of the next 40 year march to greater heights and commitment in the Lord.

Faculty of Humanities Wins Bible Quiz Competition

The Faculty of Humanities of CSUC put up a splendid performance to emerge winners of the Inter-Faculties/School Bible Quiz Competition organized by the Chaplaincy Unit of CSUC.

In a fiercely contested three-round competition, the Faculty of Humanities secured 39 points to win the competition, whiles their close contestants, the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences had 38 points. The CSUC School of Business polled 36 points to place third.

The contestants showed their impressive knowledge of the Bible, answering difficult questions on the Book of Daniel, the Book of 2 Timothy and general knowledge of the Bible. The aim of the Bible quiz was to challenge the students to achieve in-depth knowledge and develop a better understanding of the Word of God (the Bible), so that they can apply it in their lives.

The Faculty of Humanities was represented by Arabel Boye-Doe (Department of Communication Studies) and Samuel Mwinterebu (Department of Theology). Fred Antwi (Department of Nursing) and Richard Owusu Ansah (Department of Computer Science) represented the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences, whiles Eric Osei Yeboah (Department of Human Resource Management) and Sylvester Bosompem (Department of Accounting & Finance) represented the CSUC School of Business.

For their awards, the winners received CSUC cloths and cash prizes, whiles the second-placed participants received copies of 2015 Daily Guide and cash prizes. Copies of New Testament Bibles and cash prizes were awarded to the third-placed participants.

Discrimination Against Private University Students Must Stop!

By Thomas Takyi-Bonsu (Local NUGS, PUSAG and USAG President)

Private universities in Ghana play a crucial role in complementing the Government's efforts of providing equal, accessible and quality education. Unfortunately, private universities receive little support from Government which is inherent in the educational regulatory frameworks most of which hinder private universities from thriving.

The Government for instance does not care how private university students manage financially and graduate – meanwhile, it subsidizes public university students' tuition. Tuition in private universities range from GH¢1,400 to GH¢2,000 per semester, while students in public universities pay between GH¢300 to GH₵600 per semester. Sadly, private universities do not benefit from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETfund). The high tuition in private universities is partly attributed to the exorbitant affiliation fees and taxes including corporate tax that is charged to those institutions not limited by guarantee.

Currently, over 50 private universities are operating and contributing significantly to Ghana's educational development. If the Government cannot subsidize tuition of private university students, then it should reduce the taxes imposed on private universities. I also call for a review of the GETfund Act by Parliament to include private universities. I believe this can help reduce the discrimination against private university students if it is not completely eliminated.

INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT

ACCREDITATION AND AFFILIATION

The current infrastructure developments at CSUC include a purpose-built cafeteria and three modern faculty and administration buildings. One of the blocks was completed in 2003 with funds from CE-Plus (USA). The other two were financed through internally generated funds (IGF). CSUC has also completed an ultra-modern state-of-the-art Executive Hostel to provide accommodation for its fast growing student population, and other housing services to the general public. The construction of a multi-purpose Library/ICT complex is also in progress. With the existing campus now fully built, a new site has been acquired at Sabin-Akrofuom on the Kumasi-Obuasi road for further expansion.

CSUC is accredited by the National Accreditation Board (Ministry of Education), Ghana. The University College is affiliated to the University of Ghana, Legon, and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, for the award of its degrees. picture till we became a University College. Concerning our surrounding, the area was not as developed as it is now. Only few structures served as administrative, library and lectures blocks. The entire place was untarred and bushy, so students were engaged in regular cleaning and weeding to get the place tidy and healthy.

How do you feel being a pioneer student of CSUC?

I feel very proud to be one of the pioneer students, and honestly speaking that is one of the reasons why I am still lecturing here.

Do you remember any of your mates?

Oh yes! In fact, I remember all of them. The five of us that made the pioneer students were Mr. Daniel Buer (I have lost contact with him); Mr. Justin Frimpong (GILLBT); Seth Nana Mintah (now a retired Rev. Minister of Presbyterian Church Ghana); and Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante (current Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana).

Looking back, what were some of the fond memories that you had at the time?

family-like atmospherethat existed among us. I also remember the informal interaction that existed between staff and students and the outreach programmes into rural areas for evangelisation and training of leaders for the rural church.

You started with this institution 40 years ago as a student, and now a Senior Lecturer. What are some of the major transformations that have taken place at CSUC?

Hmmm, there has been a lot. There has been a great transformation in terms of infrastructure and student numbers, and I would like to commend both past and present administration for the tremendous work.

What do you think has been the guiding principle of CSUC over the years?

Strong commitment to Jesus as Lord of our lives, and in everything we do (i.e. for students, finances, development of infrastructure, etc) and the conscious development of good interpersonal relationship between Staff, Students, Council and all who are related to the school.

If you were to recommend any previous practice to CSUC, what will you recommend?

above. We only have to remain resolute and committed to our Christian principles.

As one of CSUC's first alumni, I want you to say something to the far-flung alumni of CSUC.

We tried to get the alumni going when we were only one department and although attendance was not 100%, we tried to meet as often as possible and to attend University College activities. But now, it seems everything has grounded to a halt. I suggest we try forming the alumni on department basis because of shared interest and values. When that gets going, then we can bring the various groups together annually or bi-annually for joint meeting and elect executives for the combined alumni groups.

Finally, how do you see the future of CSUC?

Very bright provided we keep to our Christian values and continue to forge strong relations with our students, alumni and other stakeholders.

Thank you very much Mr. Ntsiful for sharing this important historical information on CSUC.

Mr. Ntsiful:

You were one of the first students who enrolled in this institution. In the first place, how did you get to know about Christian Service College (CSC), now Christian Service University College (CSUC)?

I got to know of CSC (now CSUC) from Mr. Isaac Ababio who was one of the lecturers of the school – in fact, he took the first batch of students in the absence of the Principal who was then away on medical grounds.

Can you give a pictorial representation of how CSUC looked like when you started school?

Four students started with the Diploma in Christian Service and Biblical Studies programmes – the only programmes that were offered at the time. But we were joined by another student in the course of the academic year, increasing the total number of students to five. Fellowship wise, we were a close knit fellowship comprising of staff, their families, Council, Trustees, Friends and the students. This was basically the

CSUC Re-launches Logo

In renewing the identity of CSUC as a Christ-led institution, it is imperative that the University College's brand clearly identifies with what its values and principles represent. The new logo is meant to depict exactly that. The difference between the old and new logo is that the new logo has the solid 'Cross of Christ' distinctly visible between the two 'Atumpan' drums and the two drums are also distinct. The acronym 'CSUC' is still written on top of the drums and the meanings of these symbols have not changed:

· The 'Cross of Christ' represents the message of the cross

· The Atumpan Drum was used by the Akans in the olden days to send messages to people within the community. In the CSUC logo, the 'Atumpan Drum' is used as a symbol communicating the message of the cross.

thStakeholders of CSUC were not left out of the 40

anniversary celebrations of the University College. Former

and current Trustees and Council Members; friends and

partners, alumni and students of the University College

were invited to a special Conference of Stakeholders of

CSUC as part of activities of the anniversary celebrations.

The conference was aimed at creating a platform for CSUC stakeholders to discuss issues concerning the University College, share and exchange ideas, and propose suggestions for consideration and implementation by the CSUC authorities. The conference was also aimed at forging stronger ties between the institution and its far-flung stakeholders.

Various sessions held during the conference offered stakeholders the opportunity to present their views on future developments of CSUC in general, including fund-raising initiatives, programme and infrastructure development, as well as the retention of high calibre staff among others.

Prof. Stephen Adei, former Rector of GIMPA who was also the Guest Speaker, spoke on the topic: “What Makes Great Colleges” with particular reference to what will make CSUC become an excellent higher Christian educational institution.

Prof. Adei who is also a long standing friend of CSUC enumerated several factors that combine to make great colleges and especially, a Christian institution like CSUC to fulfill its mission of promoting spiritual, moral and ethical values. Among them included upholding the missions and vision of founding fathers; undertaking research initiatives and innovation by lecturers and graduate students, as well as improving the level and quality of facilities and systems.

The former GIMPA Rector called for a dramatic change from the traditional method of talking to large number of students during lectures to the mode that encourages students to do their own investigations and work in smaller groups. He stressed that ICT was the best way through which such transformation could be achieved.

thCSUC organized the 7 Senavoes Memorial Lectures as thpart of activities to mark the 40 anniversary celebrations of

the University College. The two-day event was on the

theme, “CSUC at 40 Years and Growing: Renewing Our

Identity”.

The Senavoes Memorial Lectures is a biennial event held in honour of Mr. Ransford Senavoe and Mrs. Juliana Senavoe, former Vice-Principal and Principal of CSUC respectively.

The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante delivering the lectures, charged CSUC to remain committed to the vision of the institution's founding fathers of training professionals who will exhibit Christian values of honesty and integrity in their various fields of endeavour.

Most Rev. Prof. Asante who is also the Chairman of the National Peace Council and an alumnus of CSUC said, as a Christian institution, CSUC had the responsibility to impart not only academic knowledge, but also moral and ethical values to students.

To this end, Most Rev. Prof. Asante encouraged authorities of CSUC to sustain the integration of Christian values and principles in the programmes of the University College.

Most Rev. Prof. Asante said it was wrong for anyone to draw a line between religious and secular ways of life, adding that the work of God was not limited only to the work of pastors and church activities, but it also applied to other fields of human endeavour.

He therefore, called on all Ghanaians to use their professions to promote the work of God by exhibiting ethical and moral values at the workplace.

The memorial lectures brought together former and current Trustees and Council Members; the only son, Joshua and family members of the late Mr. & Mrs. Senavoe; friends; and alumni of the University College.

TH EXCERPTS FROM CSUC 40ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

LAUNCH CLOSING REMARKS BY

CHAIRPERSON, DR. D. O. GYANE, (CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF

THTRUSTEES) ON 19 FEBRUARY, 2014

In God's work the day of small things is not to be despised, Zachariah 4:9-10.

Luke 13:18-19 “what is the Kingdom of God like? It is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his garden, and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches”.

The small insignificant seed grew into such a big tree providing shelter and comfort to the birds of the air and the big animals as well.

CSUC is indeed the proverbial mustard seed. Sown 40 years ago, unnoticed and unrecognized by people, it has grown and become a blessing to many.

1 Corinthians 3:6-7 Paul says “I planted, Apollo's watered but God gave the GROWTH, so neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything but God who gives the GROWTH”.

Some people planted, some watered and have passed on, others are still WATERING. If you are not part of those WATERING, I pray that what you have heard of 40 years journey will challenge you to be part of the “WATERING TEAM”. You can join the TEAM by being a Friend of CSUC. Friends of CSUC are those who are in a position to make the institution known – recommending it to young people desiring training etc., and supporting it by PRAYER and GIVING (both time and money). When we have played our part the Lord will give the GROWTH as He has been doing.

Finally brethren, like Nehemiah, my appeal to you is that “the work is great and widely spread on the wall far from one another. In the place where you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there, our God will fight for us” (Nehemiah 4:20).

SUC President Attends AWARD Leadership and Management C Training Workshop

he President of CSUC, Prof. (Mrs.) Frances Owusu-Daaku, took part in a fully sponsored TLeadership and Management workshop offered

by African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) in Nairobi in April, 2014.

The workshop involved seven days of grueling but exciting hands-on sessions of facilitative lectures interspersed with role plays at the prestigious Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya.

The President was invited to attend this workshop in her capacity as a mentor to an AWARD fellow, Mrs. Priscilla Francisco Ribeiro, a PhD student working on breeding varieties of maize that can thrive in low-nitrogen soils.

The 30 selected participants, all women, included both mentors and fellows from Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda.

Sharing one key lesson learnt from the workshop to CSUC staff, Prof. (Mrs.) Owusu-Daaku said, “even though we may be working well in different departments, if each and every person does not see himself or herself as working with all others for a common institutional goal, CSUC will not accomplish whatever task that must be done”.

President Participates in IAPCHE Conference in Malaysia

CSUC continues to pursue opportunities for networking and collaborations with other Christian higher education across the world. As part of such efforts, the President, Prof. (Mrs.) Frances Owusu-Daaku participated in the International Association of Christian Higher Education (IAPCHE) Asia-Oceania College/University Partnership Conference at the d'Village Resort in Melaka, Malaysia in November 2014. “It was a 20-hour journey from Accra to Melaka, but it was worth it”, Prof. (Mrs.) Frances Owusu-Daaku stressed.

The main thrust of the conference was to enable participants get to know other Christian institutions, plan, and establish partnerships that could lead to dual degree programmes, international student admissions and exchange, international student volunteering, faculty exchange, international visits of students for exposure and study, facilitating and promoting research and publications, resource sharing, organizing international conferences and other related ventures.

The conference accorded the President exactly this opportunity to interact with various Heads of Christian Higher Education (CHE), not only in Asia and Oceania, but in the UK, USA and Canada. It is expected that a follow-up of this meeting will result in great benefits to CSUC. The trip was co-sponsored by IAPCHE and CSUC.

thSUC held its 38 Graduation Ceremony to confer degrees on a total of 519 students from Cthe departments of Nursing; Computer Science;

Theology; and Communication Studies; as well as Accounting & Finance; Management & General Studies; and Marketing, Logistics & Corporate Strategy. Two hundred and ninety six (296) students out of the total number were males, while 223 were females.

thThe 38 Graduation Ceremony also officially marked ththe climax of CSUC's year-long 40 Anniversary

Cerebrations which was launched in February, 2014. The event was on the theme, “CSUC at 40 Years and Growing: Renewing Our Identity.”

Prof. Stephen Adei, former Rector of GIMPA in a guest speaker’s address during the ceremony underscored the vital role private universities play in the country's national development. He therefore, called on the state to formulate a national higher education policy that is not biased against private universities in terms of the award of accreditation, charter and funding. “Why is it that a Ghanaian going to a public university is looked after by the government to learn business, but support is denied to those who go to private universities to even

.

study architecture, nursing or engineering?” Prof. Adei questioned.

Drawing lessons from the success story of Nehemiah, Prof. Adei called on all and sundry to rise up and build a great godly institution in Ghana at CSUC. He spoke on the topic, “Let us Rise Up and Build an Authentic Top Rated Christian University in Ghana.”

He recommended that CSUC should have a core solidly Christian and liberal arts programme which every student must go through so that they are exposed to the gospel of Jesus Christ and are equipped morally and spiritually for the market place. Prof. Adei advised the graduands not to compromise on their character, but continually sharpen their capacities and competence and care for others.

The President of CSUC, Prof. (Mrs.) Frances Owusu-Daaku said the University College continued to pursue a road map towards the attainment of a Presidential Charter. She outlined that the road map focused on areas including upholding CSUC values or identity as a Christian higher education, academic programme enhancement, extensive teaching and research, as well as staff

development. Others are networking and collaborations, funding and sustainability issues, quality assurance enhancement and expansion in infrastructure and accessibility.

Touching on new programmes, the President indicated that a new Business Administration programme option in Purchasing & Supply Chain Management and a master's degree programme in Christian Ministry with Management had been introduced by CSUC.

The President also explained that CSUC sought to renew its relationship with Eastern University in the United States to facilitate both staff and student exchange programmes.

Prof. (Mrs.) Owusu-Daaku explained that in order to ensure financial sustainability, CSUC would continue to explore other funding avenues to raise funds to support the growth of the University College. To this end, the President called on friends and partners, corporate and religious bodies, alumni and all and sundry to contribute to CSUC's fund-raising initiative to enable the institution complete its library/ICT complex, support brilliant but needy students and expand academic programmes, as well as support existing programmes.

She charged the graduates to be ambassadors of CSUC by upholding the core values of the University College in their various fields of endeavour.
