    BACKGROUNDBACKGROUND

    y L&T was founded in Bombay (Mumbai) in 1938 by two

    Danish engineers, Henning Holck-Larsen and Soren

    Kristian Toubro.

    y Together, Mr. Holck-Larsen and Mr. Toubro, founded the

    partnership firm of L&T in 1938, which was convertedinto a limited company on February 7, 1946.

    y Beginning with the import of machinery from Europe,

    L&T rapidly took on engineering and construction

    L&T's participates in building a healthy community through

    continuing initiatives in several areas of healthcare, with a

    focus on mother & child care and HIV/AIDS awareness.

    All L&T locations, including construction sites, have in-

    house AIDS awareness programs

    Five additional mother & child care centers were set up in

    2006-07.

    L&T organizes health checkups, provides gynaecology and

    laboratory facilities, carries out free cataract surgeries andintra ocular lens implants, and helps maintain health data

    for children

    L&T's diverse and sustained programmes in education

    provide underprivileged children with learning

    opportunities through supply of educational materials,

    teaching aids, recreational tools and up scaling schoolinfrastructure.

    The vocational training institutes of the Larsen and

    Toubro Public Charitable Trust, provide local communities

    with skill-based training in Formwork, Masonry, AgroMechanics, Electricals, Fabrication, Welding and

    Housekeeping.

    In May 2007, L&T commissioned a three-stage sewagetreatment plant (capacity 350,000 liters a day) based on

    the state-of-the-art Structured Attached Fixed Film

    (SAFF) technology.The Zero Discharge approach of the

    Powai Campus saves over 350,000 litres water everyday

    through water treatment and recycling.y More than 13,500 trees have been planted in different

    L&T campuses in the last year, and an additional 4,000

    saplings were distributed among local communities

    y L&T is among the first in the Indian corporate sector to

    join rescue and rehabilitation efforts for the victims of

    natural calamity.

    y L&T and its employees have provided relief measuresduring natural calamities like earthquake and floods.

    y After the floods in Surat (Gujarat-India), L&T played a

    major role in road-clearing operations, organising

    medical camps, and supply of food, water, clothes and

    other relief materials.

    y L&T extended assistance in the form of men, machine

    and money during the earthquake in Gujarat.

    y E-Lawn April 2009

    Launched at its Construction Skills Training institute at

    Manapakkam. Aimed at creating sustainable

    neighborhoods and promoting awareness on water

    conservation, controlling air pollution.

    y Green Hands January 2010

    Students from various schools in and around Chennai

    visited L&T nursery at Manapakkam campus and

    participated in project.Children were given hands ontraining in tree plantation and were taught about various

    types of trees and their usage in daily life.

    y Each year, L&T's Health Centre at Andheri,Mumbai,

    treats around 25,000 patients.

    y Between October 1983 and March 2004, L&T carried

    out over two lakh immunizations against common

    childhood illnesses - tuberculosis, polio, measles,hepatitus B, etc.

    y In October 2009 donated Rs 1,04,120 to CMs flood

    relief fund to help people affected in the Krishna river

    floods.y Planted more than 1.5 lac trees in all our campuses and

    nearby communities.

    SUGGESTIONSSUGGESTIONS

    For Maithree:-

    y More number of allotted teachers can be allotted for the

    program as in the case carried out ,there was a

    shortage of staff

    y A medical camp was organised and its duration

    demanded was once a month for which the firm was

    not prepared ,this could be pre empted and appropriate

    suggestions can be made for the same

    y Basic things like medical kit and packages could be apart of the tour kit taken to these cities.

    y One very effective way to inculcalte the true spirirt

    would be to train local people in the acts of doing first

    aid and also on educating the mothers with tips on

    proper child health care which would help them in future

    y To do the above mentioned L&T could conductseminars or workshops for mothers where in they would

    be guided by noted and expert doctors on child health

    care

    y

    Setting up a small area for medical fitness and alsoconduction of health checkups for new mothers could

    be a point to work on as only a healthy mother can take

    care of a healthy child.
