Benchmarking, Goal Setting, Mid-term Review, Annual Performance Review, assimilating the learnings for course correction…they are all part of Management Practice. This is so much relevant to managing our affairs at home and elsewhere as well.

In recent times, I noticed a term that caught my attention – ‘Corporate Sustainability & Responsibility’.

While Corporate Sustainability Reporting is one strategic part of CSR that organizations like L&T imbibe as a process, Corporate Social Responsibility is the other side of the same coin – one that translates plans into fine tangible activities. This ‘Corporate Sustainability & Responsibility’ cleverly integrates and makes it seem to be a seamless continuum … in planning and doing right programmes that enriches the stakeholders & the society. This integrated approach to planning and carrying out activities would ultimately decide the Sustainability of Corporates and the larger

Society too. Organizations are very much an integral part of the society! And the efforts from Prayas Teams across multiple locations is able to add that ‘Nightingale Touch’ to our reaching out!!

With the end of another Financial Year, we could also take some time to review our ‘CSR Score Card’. While the numbers do mean everything, it does not surely discount the quality of our activities or programmes. The back cover has our Score Card for the period April 2012 to March 2013 vis-à-vis the same period of the previous year. Excerpts from an interaction with Mr. R. Dhanasekaran, Quality Manager, Blood Bank – Indian Red Cross Society about the process which makes blood ready to save a life from the time it is donated…

Journey of the Gift of Life

Commencing from the collection centre, when the collected blood leaves [in the stored form], the team of technicians, after having put in some nine hours of work – collecting blood - have to immediately put in another six hours of labour to pro-cess the samples / separate the component by meticu-lous testing and put it to right Storage.

Blood Collection The most common type

of blood donation is a whole blood collection. Approxi-mately 450 ml of blood is collected from donors above 55 kg in weight and 350 ml from donors who are above 45 kg in weight by aseptic venepuncture. The whole blood is collected in a bag which is coated with anti-coagulant citrate phosphate dextrose solution that main-tains the red blood cell vital-ity for a specific storage peri-od and prevents clotting. At blood camps, it is the normal procedure to collect blood units in a single bag and later on separate the components such as red blood corpus-cles, platelets and plasma through automation process in laboratories. In addition to the single collection bag, there are also additional bags which are used when there is a need to extract specific components of blood.

The collected blood is separated component wise at the laboratory within six hours. The process of separa-tion is done through refrig-erated blood bag centrifuge

equipment by a series of low / high spinning movements amidst heat and cooling ef-fect that separates the com-ponents. Major components of blood include: type of positive or negative

as Rh factor and the blood is subjected to safety testing through an Enzyme Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay (ELISA) reader. The ELISA reader screens the blood for anti-bodies such as virus, bacteria and allergens. Based on the screening, the tagged sample is matched with col-lected and separated blood units kept in the quarantine cell (Unscreened Blood Bank Refrigerator). The healthy blood units including the separated components are moved to the screened cell (Screened Blood Bank Refrig-erator).

Blood units which are detected with virus, bacteria and allergens are moved to the discard refrigerator. The virus infected blood is in-cinerated and later only the leftover fluid is handed over to Biomedical waste dispos-ers. The blood bank commu-nicates to the donor through its public relation officer / counsellor in a confidential manner on the detection of virus and provides guidance to the individual on treat-ment of the ailment.

Quality Assessment Programme

It is mandatory for all blood banks to submit 1% of the blood units collected for internal / external quality control and quality assur-ance. In addition to this, the blood banks are audited by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Health-care Providers (NABH) on a quarterly basis. National Accreditation Board for Hos-pitals & Healthcare Provid-ers (NABH) is a constituent board of Quality Council of India, set up to establish and operate accreditation programme for healthcare organisations. The accredi-tation programme assesses the quality and operational systems in place within the facility. The accreditation in-cludes compliance with the NABH standards, applicable laws and regulations includ-ing guidelines set by Nation-al AIDS Control Organisa-tion (NACO).

Following the blood’s journey from donation to processing to transfusion would make this noblest of act an Enriching experience for every donor.

When a component is separated from the whole blood, it is stored in a spe-cialised blast freezer at -80°C temperature and later moved over to specific stor-age refrigerators. Blood bank refrigerators are specialised cold storage units equipped with temperature control, temperature chart recorder and automatic alarm. The re-frigerators depending on its capacity can store anywhere between 50 to 600 units. Larger hospitals and blood banks are equipped with cold storage rooms for stor-ing greater number of units. For specific blood require-ments, the components are prepared in a Laminar Flow Cabinet (biologically safe cabinet) in sterile air.

Blood Screening(After collecting blood, test-ing will be done)

At blood donation camps when there are large num-bers of donors, immediate screening of blood is not done as the process of blood safety assessment involves approximately a time peri-od of 3 to 5 hours and mak-ing donors wait for such a long period is not feasible. A blood sample is collected from every donor after the individual completes the mini physical test. The sam-ple is tagged and sent for a screening and the blood is collected from the donor.

At the laboratory the samples are identified and typed which includes the ABO blood grouping, Rh

L&T protects Tribals and anti-poaching watchers of the Forest Department

The Pollachi-based National History Trust had conceived a project to help Tribals and anti-poaching watchers of the Forest Department. These tribals often face hardship like snake bites and man-animal conflict, often leading to serious injury or losing their lives.

The Trust had proposed to supply the Tribals and anti-poaching watchers with Britelite torches and hunter shoes to help them spot animals at a distance and avoid contact. Also the wearing of appropriate foot wear would prevent snake bites. The anti-poaching watchers would enter the forest with greater confidence and guard with more zeal, which will go a long way in conserving our forests on which we all depend. Towards this, they sought help from L&T’s.

L&T helped provide 100 sets of torches and footwear to

these tribals along the forest fringe areas.A symbolic event was held at the Government School at Topslip, Anamalai on 23rd March 2013. Dr. Rajeev K. Srivastava, IFS., Chief Conservator of Forests presided over an event with Mr. S Arokiaraj Xavier, Forest Range Officer. From the Natural History Trust, Dr. Vasanth Alva (President) and Mr. S Mohamed Ali (Secretary) thanked L&T for the support. They appreciated L&T’s Green initiatives and the company’s other efforts in Green Building and Sustainability programmes.
