We all have Heroes. Those people who have made an indelible mark on our lives. Some Heroes have shaped our career path, our way of think-ing, or perhaps our way of interacting with others. Some Heroes have inspired us to be better people, to care, to make

a difference, to share, to encourage, to help, to love. Our Heroes are often a parent, a friend, a teacher, an author, an athlete, a world leader, or perhaps a humble Evangelist.

In my case it’s the latter. The world lost a great man of God this past week, but our loss is Heaven’s gain. Dr. Billy Graham inspired me as a young pastor to be true to my call. To preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ with love and conviction. To be a man of the Word. To be a man of prayer. I try very hard to do just that even though I fail at times.

One characteristic of Dr. Graham that I greatly admired was his singularity of purpose. He was never associated with moral failure or financial scandal. And he never let fame, celebrity, politics, or influential friends and acquaintances distract or skew the message of the Gospel. Dr. Graham’s primary focus was one thing…sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. Let us remember what the great Apostle Paul wrote, “This one thing I do…”

Not ten things I’m trying to do.

With that thought in mind, let us remember why we are here. Why God has placed us together as family of believers. Why God has equipped each one of us uniquely with abilities and gifts that are meant to be shared, not closed off to others. We are here, at this time and place, to share the love of Christ, to be His disciples, to be His witnesses, to help those in need, to reach the lost, to share our time, talent, and treasure, and to show the love of Christ in very practical ways.

As we journey together during this Lenten Season may we all examine our hearts and minds. May we ask the hard questions. “Am I trusting God?” “Am I living for the Lord?” “Am I providing a spiritual home for my spouse and children?” “Am I serving the Lord with all my heart?” “Am I living the God-First Life?” “When people get to know me do they see Jesus?” My prayer is that we will be able to answer “Yes” to these questions as we journey together through the Season of Lent and celebrate Easter Sunday together. God Bless You All, Pastor Greg

Building & Futuring Committee Update

By Clyda Johnson

Things are “growing” at Monticello UCC and what a

wonderful growth it is! Our committee presented to

the congregation at the quarterly church conference

the plans for our new Monticello UCC Community

Outreach Center building. It was voted on to accept

the plans with minor alterations. We submitted the

plan back to Ms. Diamond to reduce the size from

14k sq. ft. to approximately 10.5-11k sq. ft. to keep

the cost around 1 million dollars. We received the

new plans back from Ms. Diamond and are meeting this Sunday February

25, 2018, to vote on the new plan and to give to Dean so he can send to

the architects for the blueprints to be drawn! What an exciting time this is

for everyone!!!

The newly formed Fundraising Group met and the following actions were

discussed and added to the calendar for the upcoming year for fundrais-

ers for the new building. The group will continue to have meetings to dis-

cuss new ways to reach out to the community and raise funds at the same

time. Feel free to come to the meetings and add your thoughts and ideas.

Events are as follows, so please mark your calendars to show your

support of these events:

already been ordered!! Let’s keep this momentum going! You can also order

additional bricks in honor, memory or dedication to anyone you choose, and

it will be proudly displayed on the wall of the new building!

A new sign was erected on the building site on February 22, 2018 announcing

the growth of our church’s ministries in the community. Make sure you notice

it when you pass by. It’s an outward sign to our church family and to the com-

munity that we are proudly on our way to fulfilling God’s plans for the growth

of our church!

Lastly, we as a committee, want to reach out to those that signed their

original pledges to begin fulfilling them or to start back if you had stopped

submitting payments to fulfill your pledge due to inactivity. We now have new

momentum and pray that you will begin to see progress on the building

within the year. We also are planning to start a new Capital Campaign to assist

with the funding of the new building. Please continue to keep the work of

God’s servants in your prayers to bring God’s fulfillment of His plan to

fruition.

Jamie and Hunter Smothers . . . Presented a program on Sunday February 4 on their trip to Africa last year. They shared stories and slides of their adventures that featured safaris among wild animals, incredible scenery, and touching personal interactions with the people there. Their presentation showed how donations from MUCC were greatly need-ed and appreciated by many along their way. They are working to establish more opportunities for our church to continue outreach in Africa.

82 pounds of food was delivered to Greensboro Urban Ministry last month! Thanks to all who contributed!!

Congratulations to Rick and Leia Johnson on the biirth of

Taylor Kennedy Johnson . . . Who was born January 13. Taylor is the sister of Adam, the granddaugh-ter of Clyda and David Johnson , Kevin Taylor, Connie Taylor and the great granddaughter of Marvin Johnson, Gerri Elliott and Richard Dickerson.

Ethan Wilson . . . was confirmed during worship services on Sunday, January 28. Ethan is the son of Cari and Stacey Wilson and grandson of Bobby Smith. He was presented with a beautiful Bible.

On Sunday, February 25 we held Blanket Sunday that we have done for so many years. Our generous donation to the Church World Service Blanket program tells people in crisis, "You're not alone, someone cares." Adam, Aiden, Karrington and Micah demonstrated the many uses of the large and warm blanket that helps families who have lost their homes to tornadoes, floods, earthquakes and other disasters. The compassion and generosity of our congregation made it possible to send seventy-two blan-kets providing a blessing of God's love in this world. A special thanks to Matilda, a young girl at our church, who donated all of her monies ($31.00) from her lemonade stand to support Blanket Sunday. That is a generous spirit!! Thanks to helpers Clyda, Zara & Tammy too! For he delivers the needy when they call, the poor and those who have no helper. Psalm 72:12 - Patsy Smith

According to Matthew’s account,

what was torn when Jesus died?

A. Mary’s headdress — she tore it as

a traditional Jewish sign of grief

B. A Roman guard’s sash — Peter

grabbed and ripped it in anger

C. Jesus’ robe — the soldiers divided

it among themselves

D. The temple curtain — torn in two from top to

bottom
