Criminology teaching at Manchester has adistinguished history, with courses incrime, policing and criminal justice beingoffered since the 1970s. The tradition ofManchester Criminology has alwaysincluded rigorous and critical analysis,empirical research and an engagementwith ‘real world’ problems.

If you choose to study with us you will be taughtby some of the UK’s leading experts incriminological research in the Centre forCriminology and Criminal Justice (CCCJ), based inManchester University’s Law School. The Centre isa thriving and internationally recognised hub ofteaching and research and is home to 15dedicated criminologists using a range of socialscience methods in studying many aspects ofcrime and criminal justice. Our teaching is

inspired by our research, ensuring that ourstudents engage in the most current debates inthis constantly developing discipline. In recentyears CCCJ staff have been at the forefront of research on a diverse range ofsubjects including drug use and policy, hate crimeand other forms of violence, policing and securitygangs, criminal law and justice, comparative criminal justice, migration and people trafficking, and gender and crime.

The University of Manchester, the Law Schooland the Centre work together to provide awelcoming and stimulating academicenvironment in which to study. The range ofacademic support, social opportunities anddedicated careers advice on offer makesCriminology at The University of Manchester ahighly sought after choice. Our existing studentsrank us highly, with our BA course in Criminologyscoring 100% for student satisfaction in the 2012National Student Survey.

Our Criminology course will give you a broadunderstanding of crime as a dominant social problemand allow you to explore explanations for criminalbehaviour and society’s responses to it, includingpreventative efforts involving the public, politicians,the police and the criminal justice system.

The core course units in your first year provide athorough grounding in the key criminological andcriminal justice debates and enable you to developresearch and study skills. Year 2 builds uponknowledge from Year 1 enhancing critical, analyticaland research skills and providing focused study onone chosen module from a range of options. Theextensive choice of modules offered in Year 3provides an opportunity to specialise in more complexareas of the discipline, allowing expertise to be builtup through in-depth study.

These are some of the questions you’ll discuss on the course:

• What is ‘crime’, what are its causes and how doessociety respond to it?

• What part does the media play in fuelling fear ofcrime, creating moral panics and perpetuatingprejudice?

• How should we deal with young people who offend?

• How can we explain an increase in the use ofrecreational drugs amongst young people?

• How are serious crimes, like human trafficking,organised?

• Why do people feel afraid when overall recordedcrime rates have fallen consistently over the last decade?

• How can the police prevent crime?

• Does prison ‘work’?

• Is there any evidence for the effectiveness of sentences delivered by our magistrates’ and judges?

• What problems do we face in trying to research crime?

Year One: Range of Discipline Course Unitsto include: Crime and Society. CriminologicalResearch Methods, Foundations of CriminalJustice. Psychology, Crime and CriminalJustice I. Enhanced Study Skills forCriminology

Year One provides core theoreticalframeworks across a range of disciplines anddevelops students, research and study skills.

Assessment: Coursework and examination

Year Three: A Compulsory Dissertation (Short or Long). 100 optionalcredits, for example Crime Prevention, Organising Crime, Youth Justice,Victims of Crime , Drugs and Society, Managing Offenders in theCommunity, Crimes of Mass Violence. Counter Terrorism

Year Three provides the student with opportunities to engage with themore complex areas of the discipline and study areas that are ofparticular interest to them.

Assessment: Coursework including essays, portfolios, wikis,presentations and examination

Year Two: Compulsory Discipline Course Units: ExplainingCrime and Deviance. Accessing and Understanding Data forCriminologists. Data Analysis for Criminologists.Understanding Punishment. Policing and the Police

PLUS one optional Course Unit for example Criminologyand Criminal Justice in Action.

Year Two provides students with the opportunity toenhance their critical and analytic skills and to develop theirresearch skills in both qualitative and quantitative research.

Careers and postgraduate studyThe course has an employability thread runningthroughout the three years, combining academiclearning with the development of essential work-related skills to assist you on your career trajectory.Through our links to relevant professions we provideyou with opportunities to gain a real, practical insightinto a range of different careers, preparing you forgraduate employment. You will find this degree ofparticular value if you plan to work in the criminaljustice system, local government, public services,social welfare, or the voluntary sector. All ourgraduates benefit from excellent training intransferable skills, strong research methods and dataanalytic skills. Skills development is embeddedthroughout our courses in order to prepare studentsfor entry into a wide range of professions, within andoutside the criminal justice system.

For those wishing to pursue their studies incriminology at a higher level we offer twointernationally renowned postgraduate taughtprogrammes which permit specialism in comparativecriminology, security, organised crime, researchmethods, law and ethics.

Law with Criminology LLB (Hons) 3yrsUCAS Code M1M9

Building on the many links between the relateddisciplines of law and criminology, this Joint Honourscourse provides an integrated course that encouragesstudents to approach topics from the viewpoint ofboth disciplines. Situated in The School of Law,students can take advantage of a unique joint-honours programme delivered in one interdisciplinarySchool. Many of our staff take a socio-legal approachto their research and teaching which is well suited tothis course. This integrated approach allows us toprovide a unique course taught by research activelawyers and criminologists. As a qualifying lawdegree, this course prepares you for a professionalcareer in law, criminology and community justice.

Teaching and learningThe Criminology courses we offer are taught byresearch active staff, using interactive lectures,workshops and small-group seminar teaching.Students are supported in developing presentation,writing and debating skills through a diverse range ofassessments. Each course unit is comprised of 30taught hours over the semester and fully supportedby Blackboard 9, our online teaching and learninginterface. This provides a range of online learningresources and multimedia, discussion groups, quizzes,and electronic reading lists, as well as access toteaching materials and presentations. All lecturersand academic advisors have weekly feedback/drop-inhours, which provide students with the opportunityto meet on a one-to-one basis with specialistteaching staff to discuss their courses. Additionalweekly in-sessional classes are offered to helpstudents with their English language, research andessay-writing skills.

Extra-curricular activitiesThe student societies hosted by the school togetherwith the common rooms facilities, opportunities forvocational work afforded by the School’s Legal AdviceCentre, and international student exchangeprogrammes equip our students well with the skills,support and connections they need to enter a rangeof professions upon graduation.

MUCS (Manchester UniversityCriminology Society)Newly established in 2011, MUCS is a dedicatedsociety for Criminology students aimed at providingour students with social events and sportingopportunities. Additional annual events include afield trip to Manchester Prison. MUCS works veryclosely with MULS (see below) and, indeed, organisesmany activities jointly. MUCS is a Society run bystudents for students. It adds to students’ experiencesof university life and helps create a vibrantcommunity of students spanning the different intakesand year groups.

MULS (Manchester University LawSociety)MULS, sponsored by City and regional law firms,organises social and sporting events in conjunctionwith MUCS. Typical events include the Spring Ball,pub quizzes, a Halloween party and inter-Schoolsports tournaments in football, rugby and netball.The Law School sports teams compete with otheruniversities and frequently dominate the UniversityLeague tables. Criminology students also get involvedin the Debating Society, Streetlaw Society and othergroups run by MULS.

Legal Advice CentreCriminology students are offered the opportunity towork in the Law School’s own Legal Advice Centre,providing supported advice to members of the publicunder the supervision of law practitioners andacademics from the school.

Study abroad and internshipsCriminology students have the opportunity to applyfor a ‘study-abroad’ semester in the second-year ofthe BA Criminology program (currently MelbourneUniversity in Australia, and in the USA at ArizonaState University and Rutgers University, New Jersey).Details of the scheme are available here:http://www.law.manchester.ac.uk/undergraduate/studyabroad/studyabroad/

Spending a semester abroad broadens your horizonsand is a great way to meet and study with people inother countries who share your passions andinterests. The experience of studying and livingabroad develops your academic and personal skills,which increases your employability while alsoenabling you to travel and make new friends from allover the world.

Law with Criminology students have the opportunityto apply for summer internships in Malaysia andSingapore, carrying out pro-bono work and gainingexperience in a growing economy.
