Grace, mercy, and peace to you from God, our creator, Jesus, our redeemer, and the Holy Spirit, our comforter.
Amen.
I have just returned from a three-day Teens Encounter Christ (TEC) weekend at Camp Agape where I served as
one of the Spiritual Directors.
It was a wonderful, inspirational and exhausting weekend! I come away from this weekend with my heart filled
with joy because of all that God accomplished over this weekend. There are several take-aways for me:
1. The youth & adults at the retreat have a deep love for God and God’s Church.
2. The youth & adults at the retreat have the capacity to step out of their comfort zones to courageously stand
before others to speak about God’s presence in their lives; lovingly serve others even when its terribly cold
and you’re exhausted; work closely together with others to accomplish tasks you thought were impossible,
to be silly when you need to; and quiet when the time is right.
3. The youth & adults at the retreat yearn for meaningful ways to worship and opportunities for deep
individual and communal prayer.
4. All of this is lived out is the context of a loving and supportive Christian community where the power of God
is named, the love of Jesus is embraced, and the Holy Spirit is set free to do what the Holy Spirit does in our
lives and in the community.
I must say that I am in awe of the leadership and sacrificial service demonstrated by the youth and adults who
served on this team. There were leaders and servers from a variety of churches in the region including 15 from
St. Philip: Sydney Hewett, Cathryn Hewett, Liese Faircloth, Lauren Sittel, Emme Hooks, Aaron Faircloth,
Preston Hewett, Matt Weiner, Camryn Kepley, Michael Stewart, Elizabeth Faircloth, Joey Casadonte, Abby
Mahl and me. Pastor Elizabeth participated in a special way during the retreat. These people from St. Philip
attended for the first time: Jonathan Mahl, Julie Lawrence, Gillian Kepley, and Allan Hewett.
These take-aways apply to St. Philip as well. You’ve demonstrated your deep love for God and God’s Church.
You’ve demonstrated your capacity to step out of your comfort zones to do things that might make you
nervous and uncomfortable, to lovingly serve others in all circumstances, and to accomplish tasks that seem
impossible. Continued on pg. 2
Pastor’s Message
The Epistle St. Philip Lutheran Church February 2018
Create in me a clean heart
2
Pastor’s Message continued from pg. 1
Yet, my friends, these are also areas in our life
together that need our focused attention. In
this time of renewal and transformation, this
community of faith needs YOU to step up and
out of your comfort zones: to attend worship
regularly; to participate in Bible studies, small
groups, and fellowship opportunities; to give
generously of your financial resources; to use
your leadership in ways that strengthen our faith
community; and to demonstrate your love for
others by building and nurturing loving
relationships with each other and with our
neighbors.
None of this is easy for any of us. Our lives are
already complicated and full. So, let’s unite our
hearts and minds in prayer asking God to give us
the strength and will to do these things. May I
suggest that you add this prayer to your daily
prayers:
Loving God, I thank you for drawing me into this
faith community and I ask that you give me the
strength and will to participate fully in the life of
the congregation through worship, learning,
fellowship, generosity, and service. Overcome
the obstacles that are in my path so that I can be
the person you’ve created me to be and empower
me to use my gifts and skills to build up the Body
of Christ and to invite others to this faith
community. I pray in the name of the Father, +Son,
and Holy Spirit. Amen.
In Christ’s peace and love,
Vicar’s Message
I love Lent. I love Lent because even if it is not always a cheerful season, it is the time when we are called to be most honest about ourselves. We are invited to admit just how imperfect we are, how
hopeless the thought of fixing ourselves is, how desperately we need a savior. In this world where the only standard of acceptability is completely unreachable, Lent comes along and reminds us that nobody is reaching that standard and we are all in this together. In being ourselves, our broken and tired selves, we can rest in God because we know how the story ends. We know that spring will come, and more importantly, Easter will come.
This year I am particularly excited and energized for Lent. For the first time I will not just be attending services I will be leading them, including midweek Lenten gatherings in a format that has not been used at St. Philip before. In this time of honesty about myself, I am excited and nervous. Do I have the right skills or talents to lead the faithful? Am I discerning the guiding of Holy Spirit who has been so faithful in leading me and lighting the path? Can I believe that it will all work out? I trust that the answer is yes, because I do know the end. In the end, Easter will come. When Lent has gotten long, and the rainy and gray and cold and dark days are tedious and depressing, Easter will come. Just when I begin to wonder if I will ever be a pastor instead of a student, the Holy Spirit will come. That is what I will be clinging to this Lent.
Our ultimate hope is in the Resurrection, in Easter. To get to Easter it is important that we enter and travel through Lent, and go on a path that might not always seem brightly lit. But Easter is coming. The path through the darkness leads to the ultimate light, and I am delighted to be traveling with you.
Your companion on the journey, Vicar Sharon

Director of C.M.S.M.’s Message (Children & Middle School Ministries)
As a child, my family was quite active in our
church. My parents served on committees and
taught Sunday School, my mom sang in the choir
and my dad worked with the youth group. It was
important to them that our church be a
welcoming place for children and families and
they set an example for my brother and myself by
being an active part of creating opportunities.
My father often said “We must be active, not
reactive!” in regards to opportunities for
engagement. He encouraged the congregation to
stretch into growth rather than to chase visitors
and opportunities. It was a sentiment that was
somewhat echoed in the 1989 movie Field of Dreams in which the lead character heard “If you
build it, they will come.” It is a sentiment that I
take to heart as I begin my ministry with you at St
Philip, as I believe we are called to lean toward
where we are called to be.
I’m not planning to build a baseball diamond in the
middle of a corn field, but I think it is important to
plan for the faith formation program that we want
rather than waiting to see who shows up or
bemoaning small numbers. We are celebrating the
strengths of the faith formation program here at
St Philip, even as we are looking for opportunities
to enhance it. My hopes and dreams for this age
group include facilitating a thriving Faith
Formation program that will strengthen our
children and families and build relationships
throughout the generations.

Season of Lent 2018 Lenten midweek worship starts on Wednesday,
February 14 – Ash Wednesday – in a service that will
include the imposition of ashes to remind us that we
are dust, and to dust we shall return. In the five
weeks following, we will gather in Luther Hall for
Lifetree Café.
A part of Vicar Sharon’s internship experience,
Lifetree Café addresses the questions that people
everywhere in our society are asking. Lifetree Café is
intended to be a weekly interactive experience that
features real people’s real stories on film, guided
conversation, biblical insights, and time to build
relationships. The topics of the stories are all about
the big (and little) stuff that shapes our lives. Family.
Friends. Fears. Busyness. Balance. Money.
Materialism. Health. Heaven. Peace. Purpose. As we examine our humanity and the pain of living in an
imperfect world. Lifetree Café will provide an
opportunity to consider our relationships with God
and with each other in ways that are directly
connected to that imperfect world, asking questions
and building relationships rather than handing out
answers.
Worship will start at 6:30 pm and end by 7:30 pm on
Wednesdays Feb. through March 21. Join us for
dinner at GROW if you can, or just come participate
in Lifetree Café. Invite your friends and colleagues,
especially those who are searching, to come explore
topics at the intersection of life and faith in an
comfortable, low-pressure setting.
Topics for the first two Lifetree Café sessions will be:
February 21 – Does God have a plan for you? One
woman’s quest to save 300 babies
“Does God Have a Plan for You?” features a filmed
interview with Operation Baby Lift volunteer LeAnn
Thieman. In the final days of the Vietnam War,
Thieman and other volunteers extracted hundreds
of at-risk babies from Vietnamese orphanages.
During the Interview, Thieman explains she
originally traveled to Vietnam to escort six orphans
to the United States. Upon arrival, she learned she
would have a very different mission.
Come join us as we think about how God works in
this unpredictable world.
February 28 – Finding the Family I Never Knew
“Finding the Family I Never Knew,” features filmed
interviews with two women, one who searched for
and connected with her birth mother and one who,
after 35 years, still searches for the child she placed
for adoption.
During the program, participants will have the
opportunity to discuss their own personal
connections to adoption.

Senior Adult Book Club The Senior Ministry Book Club will
meet on Tuesday, February 27,
2018, at 10:00 am in the church
Parlor. We welcome anyone
interested in reading and discussing
books.
The next book that
we are reading is
The Key to Rebecca
by Ken Follett.
A brilliant and
ruthless Nazi
master agent is on
the loose in Cairo.
His mission is to
send Rommel’s advancing army the
secrets that will unlock the city’s
doors. In all of Cairo, only two people can stop him. One is a down-
on-his-luck English officer no one
will listen to. The other is a
vulnerable young Jewish girl. . . . This book is available at the Wake County Library.
If you have questions, please contact Kathryn Edwards or Carol Williamson.
Holy Solitude Small Groups Holy Solitude: Lenten Reflections with Saints, Hermits, Prophets, and Rebels by Heidi Haverkamp This Lent, let’s spend some intentional time together in small
groups discovering the spiritual practice of solitude. While most of
us can’t take weeks—or even a few days—or even hours—for
private retreat, Holy Solitude offers readers thoughtful inspiration
and practical devotional activities such as taking a solitary bus ride
or baking a loaf of bread for a neighbor. Daily reflections introduce
readers to figures in both Scripture and Christian history whose
stories of discernment and discipline are a guide for our own
spiritual practices as we seek to know God more fully and follow
Christ more faithfully.
We’ll come together weekly in small group to share our
experiences and to support one another with prayer, scripture
reading, and conversation.
Choose a small group from these options: • Sunday mornings at 10:00 in Kepley Hall—begins on 2/4
• Tuesday evenings at 6:30 in Luther Hall—begins on 2/6
• Wednesday mornings at 10:00 in the Parlor—begins on 2/7
• Wednesday evenings at 7:30 in Kepley Hall—begins on 2/7

Director of High School & Transitional Ministries...a message from Cathryn You may have noticed that there have been mentions of TEC (Teens Encounter Christ)
in the Epistle and on our prayer lists.
We have an extremely active involvement within TEC, in fact, the majority of our high
school youth currently have attended.
It’s not for everyone but those for whom it is a good fit TEC provides amazing opportunity for faith
growth, strong Christian relationships with other youth and adults, leadership development, and fun!
We have had a number of our own youth in leadership roles: Morgan Darrow, Joey Casadonte, Sydney
Hewett, Ellie Darrow, Aaron Faircloth, Emme Hooks, and more preparing for those leadership roles.
Louise Bouknight, Brandon Dressen, and Cathryn Hewett all serve on the TEC board and St. Philip is
the official location of all the TEC inventory. The value of TEC to our youth and young adults is
unimaginable!!
So what in the world is TEC?
What: Teens Encounter Christ (TEC) is a 3-day retreat incorporating table discussions, skits, songs,
and serious talks focused on Christ. TEC is an awesome opportunity to grow in your relationship with
Christ and build lasting Christian friendships.
Who: Those attending for the first time must have completed at least a semester of 9th grade - adult.
Where: Share the Word TEC is located in Eastern North Carolina. Retreats are held at Camp Agapé
near Fuquay-Varina, NC
When: There are two retreats per year. They are held Labor Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. weekends.
Who Can You Talk to About TEC? If you or your child is interested in attending a TEC retreat weekend
please talk with Cathryn Hewett, Louise Bouknight, Liese Faircloth, or Brandon Dressen.

not do the shopping, just pick up food from the

Holiday Smiles
Many thanks to the wonderful faith community at St Philip. Our support of the Holliday Smiles campaign for Families Together brought a more joyous Christmas to 11 families, totaling 31 people, with 157 gifts and 8 bikes! Families experiencing homelessness have so very little, and the members of St, Philip generosity assured that these parents didn’t have to explain to their children why they weren’t receiving gifts for Christmas, or these children return to school with their friends asking “What did you get for Christmas?” and have to hang their heads. In addition, we took care of a lot of parents who doubtless would have not been able to have a new sweater or pair of pants if not for the service orientation of our congregation.
Many thanks to Michelle Hooks and her family for organizing St. Philip’s participation in this ministry and to all those who assisted in sorting and transporting the gifts to Families Together.
You Made A Difference!
In 2017, your financial donations, volunteer service, in-kind support and church benevolence provided to Families Together improved the lives of 450 children right here in our community. In the month of December alone, you helped 12 families with children move from homelessness to home. And your Christmas gifts brought smiles and joy to 148 children and 86 parents. What a difference you have made.

First senior adult bus trip of 2018 is scheduled for Thursday, March 22. We will leave the church parking lot at 10:45 a.m. and travel to Sanford for a performance at the Temple Theatre of “Church Basement Ladies”. The play is about…
“…four ladies who run the kitchen and care for the congregation by preparing and serving the food. Like any great kitchen, problems are solved here as well. We see four women handle a Lutefisk Dinner, a funeral, an Easter Fundraiser, and, of course, a wedding. They stave off potential disasters, have fun, share and debate recipes, instruct the young, and keep the pastor on course”.
Cost of trip is $40.00 each (covers tickets and transportation). We will stop for lunch at Bay Breeze Seafood Restaurant.
Contact Sandra Kelly, 919-247-1038 or [email protected] to sign up or if you have questions.
