CPL. BRISSIE RETURNS TO BASEBALL Amry Cpl. Lou Brissie (age 20), a squad leader in the 88th Infantry Division, was severely wounded on December 7th, 1944, while seeing action in Northern Italy near Florence. A German artillery shell exploded very near him shattering his left tibia and shinbone in 30 places. On the same day 3 of the 4 officers in his company were killed. Wanting to get back to baseball, Brissie refused to let his leg be amputated. After 23 surgeries and 2 years of rehab, Cpl. Brissie returned in 1947 to pitch minor league baseball. In 1948, while pitching for the Philadelphia Athletics, Brissie won 14 games. In 1949, he won 16 games and, as an American League All-Star, pitched 3 innings in the 1949 All-Star game. He pitched for 7 years in the major leagues. After his major league career he for many years became active on a national level as an administrator for the American Legion baseball program. Cpl. Brissie was awarded the Bronze Star and 2 Purple Hearts for his service to his country. Submitted by: Jeff Taylor THE SHORES DAILY Keeping You Connected... It has been a great honor to be able to share with the residents of Lake Barrington Shoresthese spotlight articles on just a few of their neighbors, their friends and our veterans.

We salute Jamie Scheppman for her tireless efforts during these times.

We are disappointed to be unable to present our traditional Memorial Day ceremony. We willhowever pay tribute by displaying our flags at all entrance gates. Memorial Day honors those

that made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country.

The Veterans of LBS also want to recognize those first responders that presented themselvesto treat, nurse or care for the victims of this pandemic, and paid with the ultimate sacrifice.

TODAY, JUST THE THOMPSON BROTHERS

Our final veterans focus is on the Thompson brothers from Evanston, IL, who now residein Lake Barrington Shores.  Jim served in the U.S. Army and Michael in the U.S. MarineCorps.  Even though the Thompson boys served in different branches of the military,

their love and respect for each other has remained solid through all these years.

Sgt. Jim was in the Army fromFebruary 1964 – December 1966.

He was assigned to the 3rd U.S.Army at Fort Gordon, Georgia, wherehe served in the Military Police.  He

claims the MP motto was “Bang,Bang…Halt, Halt”.  Really?

Sgt. Michael was in the MarineCorps from January 1964 –

December 1967.  He served inVietnam, where he was involved ininterpreting photo reconnaissancefor Marine forces in the Da Nangsector. Da Nang’s proximity to the

border of North Vietnam andconstant shelling challenged his

skills and training.

Unfortunately, this Memorial Day, the Veterans of Lake Barrington Shores have

cancelled their annual Memorial Day Ceremony, usually held outside, by the Marinaand their Memorial Garden. Hopefully, it will be resumed, under sunny skies in 2021. However, how did the Memorial Garden end up being in its present location? Well, as

the organization was being established, a non-LBS Vietnam Veteran, former Director ofLBS Public Safety, Ron Wisniewski – US Army, was actively taking part in helping the

organization as they discussed establishing a Memorial Garden and asked then MasterBoard President, John Schaller, about his thoughts of creating it in the 35-acre LBSForest Preserve. While obviously feeling building such a Garden was a great idea,

Schaller suggested an even better location would be in the circular area adjacent to theMarina….and it was that location the eventually was presented to the entire Master

Board in 2006. Several volunteers and LBS vendors, including Juan Garcia fromAmerican Decorating, provided their time and resources to develop the area around aflagpole already in place –and it was officially dedicated by the group’s first President,Retired Commander John Betzold –US Navy in 2007. It since has become the backdrop

for most of the Veteran’s outdoor ceremonies.

Thank you to John Schaller for sharing this bit of history with us all!

How Did It End Up Here?
