History – Marine & Shipbuilding (Nuclear)

Began work in the Marine and Shipbuilding industry in 1995 as an Engineering Apprentice (Electrical) for GEC Marine (now BAE Systems). Began my apprenticeship identifying the correct diagrams/procedures as required. Worked on Trident class Submarines (Vengance & Vigilant), LPH (Ocean), Penetrator Workshop (Reactor cable harness assemblies) and Combat Systems (Missile guidance cabinets). Completed my apprenticeship one year early (completed my NVQ’s and ONC after two years instead of three), and due to my grades, effort and attitude during my apprenticeship I was entered into the National Outstanding Achievements Award for apprentices for which I came second in the county. At the same time I was accepted into the Technical Department to learn my second trade as an Electrical Designer/Design Draughtsman. Between 1997 and 2006 I was involved mainly with the Astute Class project (Nuclear Powered Hunter Killer Submarines), and also involved with design work on the early Future Carrier Bid (now known as the CVF) and LPD (Bulwark). During my time at BAE Systems I gained a wide range of experience in all aspects of the Technical department. I worked for three years on the 24V DC battery backed emergency system (Marine equivalent of UPS ) calculating volt drops, cable selection, schematic diagrams, cabling diagrams and equipment integration, also ensuring all loads were within the system capabilities by tying into the load analysis database. I have extensive knowledge of the following: System schematic diagrams, equipment integration, cable routing and cable integration, intelligent diagrams, cabling diagrams, connection diagrams, commissioning diagrams, tree building (EPD Connect), 3D modelling including surfaces was a big part of my experience, intelligent cable routing within the 3d models (Nodal Networks etc), GA layouts. Full boat degaussing integration and outputs, including specifying pipes, materials, flanges etc. Setting-up and maintaining the database for full boat internal/external penetrations (Seacon, Disc Seal, Rise, Brattberg) for ordering purposes, and ensured the ‘cut-outs’ in the structure were to the correct specification and position. Electrical Design Area 1 owner – route/integrate/output/arrangement complete/problem solving with integration/management/MOD/human factors etc. Using Devise to give customers and management presentations/visualization of the 3D Model within the Virtual Reality suite. Writing Technical Specifications/Definitions for external penetrations and external moulded splice blocks.
