As we come to the end of another half term, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on all theactivities at our wonderful school. There has been much going on to prepare for GCSEs. Out of hourslearning sessions have been fantastically well attended, even at weekends and Friday evenings. The Englishdepartment ran 4 weeks of Saturday morning revision sessions for Y10 and 11 students which were hugelysuccessful with nearly all pupils in key groups attending. After school lessons have been hosted by manysubjects, including the legendary Pasty and Papers science events when pupils have worked hard lookingat past papers preparing for their exams, to then be rewarded with Carrs pasties. Revision programmeshave taken place before school, at lunchtimes and during the school day arranged with great commitmentand an understanding by all teachers that the success of our Class of 2013 is our main priority at this time.We wish all Y11s the very best of luck and hope that they are rewarded for their hard work in the summer.Saturday 11th May saw Sharples school presenting at the Bromley Cross Summer Fayre. In spite of theawful weather, thousands of people turned out to see the variety of shows and support many differentcauses and charities. Sharples Samba band opened the event, the choir performed to a hushed and clearlyimpressed audience, and finally our fantastic cheer leaders wowed everyone with a superb routine. EllieTaylor also took part in a gymnastics display which was quite breathtaking. Mrs Sakeria organised andmanned the Sharples stall after spending hours preparing goody bags to hand out to visitors. It waswonderful to see so many staff, pupils, governors and parents supporting the school and the performers onthe day, and all in all, Sharples really left their mark on the whole event. The sun even came out to say welldone! There have been many successes across the school including individual achievements as well as teamevents which have been celebrated in school, sometimes in the press and as you will have seen, in ourweekly newsletter. Well done to all those pupils and the spirit they bring to Sharples with their dedicationand high aspirations.

As we approach the end of the school year, and another one fast approaches, the governors and I havebeen discussing ideas for a new Sharples badge (see below). Having consulted with staff and pupils, wehave decided to re-fresh the Sharples identity into something with more colour to reflect a positive outlookto the future. The new school badge is displayed here and we hope that you like it. Special care has beentaken to incorporate elements of the existing badge, and the history behind it. The stars are from theoriginal Sharples heraldry; the hills represent the sharp hills from which the Sharples name originates; thecrown is also taken from the existing badge where it formed part of the original Bolton symbol of an arrowand bolt. The pupil council voted overwhelming for this particular badge from a selection of ideas. They alsoasked if we would consider a new uniform. Your thoughts on this would be welcomed, but please bereassured that any change to uniform would not take place for another year. The new badge will be introduced on letters, signage etc in the coming months so please be assured thatthough things may look a little different, the caring ethos and strong values of Sharples remain the same;preparing for success through the fourCs; Courtesy, Cooperation,Consideration and Commonsense.Have a restful and safe half term breakand I look forward to seeing all pupilsback in school on Monday 3rd June atthe normal time.Rachel Quesnel, Headteacher

    Interesting Science

    Question: What

    causes lightning?

    When air rises and falls

    within a thunderstorm,

    positive and negative

    charges form in the

    cloud. The bottom of the

    thundercloud has a

    negative charge, and

    the top has a positive

    charge. A flash of

    lightning happens when

    a charge becomes so

    strong that the air cant

    stop it from jumping

    from the cloud to the

    ground, which has a

    positive charge.

    Lightning can also form

    inside the cloud, moving

    between the positively

and negatively chargedareas. The average flash

    of lightning could turn

    on a 100-watt light bulb

    for more than three

    months.

Just when you thought it was safe to come out from behind the sofa, the football seasonpresented us with another trophy opportunity! This time it was the U-13's and the U-15's

in action in the Bolton Schools' Futsal Tournament at St Catherine's. The U-13's stunnedthe opposition with wins over Canon Slade, ESSA and St Catherine's to take the title onthe night. It was a great team performance from the proud youngsters, who only

conceded one goal overall, thanks to an impressive display in goal from Tom Egan. Starperformances came from Bolton Town team players Tom Owen and recent Bury FCAcademy forward Matthew Chapman.

The U-15's took to the field later in the week determined to try and emulate our U-13's

and U-15's Bolton Futsal Champions. However, despite a resolute performance from theteam, in particular Amir Dalal and Ethan Naylor, it was an experienced St Catherine'steam that took the trophy home.

All our football enthusiasts will have an opportunity to test themselves againstinternational opposition next Easter. If you would like to go on a 5 day tour to Malta, to

train and play against local Maltese teams, see Mr Altdorf for further details of this

exciting and unique sporting opportunity. In a more traditional summer sport, the U-15's cricketers were in action in the

Lancashire Cup against holders and favourites Bolton School. A slow start proved to becrucial in the end as Sharples struggled to reach 60 runs in total, thanks to MatthewMorris who batted for the full 20 overs, and a cameo role from big hitting Mehr Khan.

The total was never going to be enough. However, an incredible opening bowling displayfrom Bolton Town Team players Will Shuttleworth and Faizan Anwar had Bolton Schoolin a panic for much of the game. Strength in depth is the key to future success for ourcricket teams, as we certainly have the individual quality with Matthew Morris, Faizan

Anwar and Adnan Bapu all representing the district side. In addition, WilliamShuttleworth has once again been selected to represent Lancashire and we are allhoping he is given the honour of captaining the team again this season.

Our girls were in action in the Bolton School's flat bat rounders tournament at HarperGreen. The girls were always going to be up against it as the majority of the team were

KS3 and playing in a KS4 tournament. The girls played Canon Slade, Thornleigh and

Ladybridge and despite losing narrowly in each game, the girls will definitely come backstronger for the experience. The first Tuesday after half term the KS 4 round bat team

will be in action, so use the break wisely to prepare for the event! Finally, Callum Elliot continues to take the athletics world by storm and create headlinesboth locally and nationally. Already the fastest 100m runner in the north of England,Callum recently smashed the Bolton town long jump record whilst competing for the

Harriers. Callum will have further opportunities to break town records as he has beenselected to represent Bolton in the Greater Manchester Athletics Championships in June. Also in June, all our talented performers will get a chance to set PB's and attempt school

records as we prepare to host our annual Sports Day at Sharples on 25th June duringthe National Week of Sport. Have a great half term break one and all and keep active

and ready for the final run in to what has been another terrific year in sport!
