Robert P. Shay, Jr.139 RUSSELL AVENUE

WATERTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS 02472

January 20,2004

Dear Sam,

I thought you might be interested in the progress of my research on Margaret Craig

Woodson since we returned to Massachusetts. After reviewing the materials I obtained in

Yazoo City and thinking further about this part of the narrative I realized that the really

interesting question about Margaret's Yazoo City years actually wasn't about Margaret

herself, but about the Craig family. Specifically, what were the origins of William R.

Craig's fortune, which is the source of the endowment on which the Woodson

Foundation is based?

This question has led me to learn something about the cotton brokerage business in the

late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and to see if 1 can find any records about the

W.R. Craig & Co., which was Will Craig's company in New York. With regard to tfelatter, I have learned that when he went to New York in 1905 he immediately bought a

seat on the New York Cotton Exchange. He and his brother had, up to that time, worked

in their father William C. Craig's cotton brokerage business. W.C. Craig apparently

moved from Yazoo City to Vicksburg at about the same time W.R. Craig went to New

York. This is where the story gets both interesting and a little tangled.

As was noted in the Yazoo County history you had sent me, Robert Craig (W.C.'s and

R.E.'s father) moved to Yazoo City in 1865. I found a fascinating business record in the

Harvard Business School historical collection that is the credit rating of U.S. firms from

1854 to about 1872. These credit ratings were descriptions of the character, credit

worthiness, wealth and land holdings of business owners and professionals in towns

across the country, including Yazoo City. They are written out in meticulous longhand

script - very small, I needed a magnifying glass to read them. The information was

obviously gleaned by the local representative of the credit rating company, R.G. Dunn

TELEPHONES: 617-926-9943 • [email protected]

Page 17: Craig Family Contents: Information about the Craig Family, · 2019. 4. 10. · Dr. Henry K. Wickes divorced between 1910 and 1910 children: Henry W. Wicks Jr, bom c 1902 Josephine

and Company, by talking to the leading business and professional people in each townabout their brethren, as well, of course, as checking the real estate registries.

While I was looking for entries about the Craig family, as I was reading through theYazoo City entries I saw many names I recognized from my research in the churcharchives, and I have the sense you would know most of the families.

I wrote down what was written about a few of the men whose family names I thought I

recognized. For example:

July 11,1854 Frederick Quackenbush - died in epidemic, "died very poor owingseveral thousand $'s."

John Armistead of N.G. Nye law firm - "known to swindle his clients"

Hudson Nye - "of good standing & owns property but drinks hard."

At any rate, the Dunn investigator noted in an entry dated 6/14/1866 that Robert Craigand Elias Rundle established a dry goods and grocery business - "a new firm, but oldcitizens and merchants - splendid men & worthy of all trust &confidence, doing goodbusiness and have ample means. A1 in standing. Own valuable town property."

A second entry dated 8/15/1869 indicated that there was now a firm, Robt. Craig & Sons, the sons being R.E. and William. "Own RE worth $12,000-$15,000 — senior partner is aman of considerable wealth."

This second entry suggests that if Robert Craig did go to Dayton as the Yazoo historysuggests, he must have come back. Alternatively, the two sons might have simply kepttheir father's name in the company name, and the senior partner was actually the olderbrother, R.E.

Be that as it may, the missing part for me is how W.C. made the transition from the drygoods business into the cotton business, and in the process became, as was noted in W.R.Craig's obituary, one of the wealthiest men in Mississippi. You mention that the Craigfamily moved into cotton factoring and owned the very large Mayday Plantation in theDelta. Do you know where there might be documentation of that, i.e. when they boughtit and for how much etc.? I think we could learn a lot if we could find W.C. Craig's

obituary, but I don't know what year he died. I expect it would have appeared in theYazoo City newspaper as well as in the Vicksburg paper.

Page 18: Craig Family Contents: Information about the Craig Family, · 2019. 4. 10. · Dr. Henry K. Wickes divorced between 1910 and 1910 children: Henry W. Wicks Jr, bom c 1902 Josephine

If I were to hazard a guess about how the fortune developed I would assume that it started

with W.C. and his brother, R.E. extending credit to cotton farmers who were customers

of their dry goods business, accepting the farmers' cotton crops as collateral. From thisthey may moved on to buying the farmers' cotton crops on the spot in Yazoo City andselling it at a profit in New Orleans. This probably became much more profitable thanthe dry goods business itself, and 1 would guess that they sold the dry goods business tomove into cotton factoring and or brokering full time. Sometime in this period one or

another of them probably bought the Mayday plantation. We do know that also in thisperiod between 1869 and 1880 R.E. Craig, W.C.'s brother, moved to New Orleans, where1 assume he entered the cotton brokerage business, providing better prices and wider

markets for the cotton his brother was buying through the factoring business in the Delta.

We know from W.R.'s obituary that he worked in his father's business in Yazoo City

along with his brother (also from the newspaper named R.E. Craig - the same initials ashis uncle - which makes this really confusing), until 1905, when he went to New York

City and bought a seat on the New York Cotton Exchange, presumably financed by hisfather, and established W.R. Craig & Co. We also know that R.E. Craig (in this case

W.R.'s brother) also was in the cotton business in New York, although I don't know

whether he was in W.R.'s company or had his own. Both were apparently mentioned in

the Pujo investigation of the Money Trusts in 1913.

The picture 1 have developed is a family enterprise with W.C. Craig buying cotton in theDelta and distributing it through his brother, R.E. in New Orleans, and later through his

sons, W.R. and R.E. in New York when New York superceded New Orleans and

Liverpool, England, as the world cotton brokerage center. The New York marketbecame the world's dominant cotton market during this time because it was the dominant

player in the cotton futures market, which during this period came to drive the globalcotton business.

I know that W.R. Craig was incredibly wealthy, not only from the fact that he owned his

own railway car, bought the estate in North Carolina and lived in the best hotels in New

York, but from the fact that when, in 1918 an employee embezzled $1 million from his

company, he personally covered the loss without it apparently affecting his standard of

living! The probate records of his estate, which 1 still have to see at first hand, indicate

that he died in 1931, at the depth of the Depression, with an estate valued at over $4million.

Page 19: Craig Family Contents: Information about the Craig Family, · 2019. 4. 10. · Dr. Henry K. Wickes divorced between 1910 and 1910 children: Henry W. Wicks Jr, bom c 1902 Josephine

That is what I know at the moment. I am obtaining a couple of documents from the

Library of Congress that are statements of the W.R. Craig & Co. business, will look at the

W.R. Craig probate records, and should track down the obituaries of W.C. Craig, hisbrother R.E. Craig (who we know died in New Orleans in 1921) as well as W.R. Craig's

brother, R.E.

Any help you could give me with the Craig obituaries in the Yazoo City newspapers

would be much appreciated.

I hope all is well with you. Missy and I are off to our trek up Kilimanjaro next week.

Sincerely,

Dear Sam,

Thank you so much for your recent letter and the copies of the W.C. Craigobituary. The information about the W.C. Craig & Co. offices in citiesacross the Delta makes it clear that the Craig family was a dominant playerin the cotton brokerage business in the Delta, and was able to leverage thatby having brother R.E. and son W.R. providing distribution into the world

markets through their brokerages in New Orleans and New York.

I have a few more sources to run down in New York City (the New YorkPublic Libraiy apparently has some documents from the New York CottonExchange pertaining to W.R. Craig & Co.), but I think I pretty much havethe information I need pertaining to the Craigs for this exercise.

I am also looking into whether the Rev. Charles Cunningham's wife, AnnieWarren Cunningham, was the beneficiary of some wealth through herbrother William Warren, who was the managing director of the Parke Davispharmaceutical company in the 1890's. The extent of my Aunt Margaret'sschooling in Virginia combined with her and her mother's extensive

Page 21: Craig Family Contents: Information about the Craig Family, · 2019. 4. 10. · Dr. Henry K. Wickes divorced between 1910 and 1910 children: Henry W. Wicks Jr, bom c 1902 Josephine

Robert P. Shay, Jr.139 RUSSELL AVENUE

Wy^ERTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS 02472European travels after the Rev. Cunningham died suggest that there was

more than the minister's salary supporting the family. So, there is probably

more to come.

Our African trip was wonderful. We got up to 15,000 feet on Kilimanjaro

before a freak snow storm forced us to turn back, just before the final ascent.

That was a bit disappointing, but we may just go back to finish the job.

The safari's enabled us to see all the wild animals one goes to Africa to see

and in profusion. Bumping around in Land Rovers day after day became a

bit tiresome, but I know we had it very easy compared to the European

explorers who ventured into the area during the 19^ century.

Thanks again for your help.

Sincerely,

Dear John,

Sam Olden's mention of your recent assistance to him in finding W.C.Craig's obituary in the Yazoo County News reminded me that I have beenremiss in writing to thank you for all the help you provided to me, mymother and my wife in connection with our trip to Yazoo City lastNovember to research the early life in Yazoo City of my great Aunt,Margaret Craig Woodson. You could not have been more welcoming orhelpful.

I understand Sam gave you a copy of my letter to him containing the results

of my research to date about the Craig family, which some future historian

may find of use.

I am enclosing a check for $100 to the Yazoo Library Association in

appreciation for all of your assistance.

Thank you again.

Sincerely,
