HOW DO YOU PLAN A STEM UNIT?

In stages!

1. Pick a topic you will be teaching.

2. Connect it to a real-world problem. Define

a challenge for the students.

3. Decide what success looks

like.

4. Introduce the challenge in an exciting way.

5. Involve student teams. Encourage

teams to develop more than one solution.

6. Students explore scientific concepts to scaffold thinking and

enhance problem solving.

7. Guide teams to choose one solution to test. Use argumentation to defend

choice.

8. Facilitate student testing and

communication of ideas.

9. If time allows, refine the prototype

and retest.

Per qualitative or quantitative rating system, a final design is selected. The final design is then thoroughly tested.

There is always more than one possible way to solve a problem …. lots of brainstorming involved. This is where really creative ideas come from.
