This season has been a departure from the typical Southern Illinois summer. We traded the sweltering summer heat in favor of cool summer nights and 80-degree days.

Here at the Park District, we’ve tried to take advantage of the season by offering a variety of activities and programs that encourage the community to get out and get involved! We offered a host of fun activities for kids, such as our “Hook a Kid on Golf” program and organized our community’s first-ever outdoor youth swim team – the Carbondale Cyclones. We were especially pleased to offer swimming classes for children and adults as a way to get residents prepared for an exciting new change coming to our community next summer! Next year, residents will be able to “splash into summer” at the new Super Splash Park Outdoor

Aquatic Center, which is scheduled to open in May 2015.I believe this facility will enhance the Park District’s ability to

foster positive development of youth through competitive water sports and confidence building recreational activities. These changes also present us with additional opportunities to expand our current aquatics programs and activities, making them available to a wider Southern Illinois audience. We are so excited about this development and we know you are too! If you’d like to get involved with our ongoing fundraising efforts to bring an outdoor aquatic center to Carbondale, visit us online at cpkd.org/supersplashpark.html to make a secure donation or to find out how you can help “make a splash” for Carbondale!

Leisure Is For Everyone (LIFE) The Carbondale Park District will make every attempt to facilitate inclusion of individuals with special needs into all of our programs and activities. Inclusion within the Carbondale Park District means individuals with disabilities are welcome to participate in the same recreation programs and activities as their peers. Reasonable accommodations are provided to enable an individual’s successful participation in a program. If you have questions about inclusion, please call 618-549-4222 to speak with the Recreation Coordinator.

Carbondale Park District Tree Memorials The Carbondale Park District Tree Memorial Program was established by the Carbondale Park District to allow a friend or loved one to be honored and remembered in a very special way - a living, growing tree. A tree will be planted on Park District property and the family notified. A permanent record will be kept of the donor, the honoree, and the site of the planting. The Park District will maintain the trees.

Tree Memorial application forms are available at the LIFE Center. For more information, call 549-4222. A minimum donation of $100.00 is required. Gifts may also be made to the Park District’s general beautifi-cation programs.

Do I pay the Resident or Regular fee?

The Resident / Regular fee is determined by your home address and whether or not you reside within the Carbondale Park District taxing district. Carbondale Park District taxpayers receive the Resident fee rate. If you own your home, your property tax bill will reflect whether or not you pay a Carbondale Park District tax. You may have a Carbondale address but reside outside the Park District tax boundary. That is why we ask what your address is when you register.

Minimum/Maximum Participation Policy

Program fees are based on a minimum number of participants signing up. The minimum number of enrollees is necessary to cover the cost of offering the program. If less than the minimum number of participants required are enrolled at the registration deadline, the Carbondale Park District reserves the right to cancel that program. Those enrolled will be notified of the cancellation and will receive a full refund by mail. The maximum number of participants is determined based on safety, facility limitations, and quality assurance.

Program Cancellation Refund When a program is canceled by the Carbondale Park District, for any reason, a 100% program registration fee refund will be issued to each canceled program registrant.

Refund Policy A 100% program registration fee refund will be issued only if a request for a refund is made no less than three business days prior to the start of the program. A 50% program registration fee refund will be issued only if a written request for a refund is received prior to the second scheduled meeting of the program. There will be no program registration fee refunds given after the second scheduled meeting of the program except as defined under Medical Refund Requests.

Medical Refund Request A pro-rated program registration fee refund will be issued based upon the number of sessions remaining in the program only if a written request accompanied with medical documentation has been received identifying a medical problem which prohibits the individual’s continued program participation. Such written request for a refund due to medical reasons must be received within three business days following the completion of the last scheduled meeting of the program. No refunds will be given thereafter.

Insurance The Carbondale Park District assumes no responsibility for injuries or accidents occurring at programs or activities. It does not carry medical or loss of personal property insurance for program participants – the cost would make program fees prohibitive. It is advisable to review your own personal insurance plan to be certain that you and your family have proper coverage.

Instructional Swim Classes Swim lessons can save a life, build a child’s confidence, and introduce little ones to a lifelong habit of water exercise. Our carefully selected instructors are certified American Red Cross (ARC) Water Safety Instructors. Our curriculum is expertly planned using the water safety guidelines outlined by the American Red Cross. Whether your child is fearful of the water or just wants to perfect a particular stroke, we have a right class for you! Our highest priority is to provide all swim lesson participants with a safe and comfortable place to learn swimming skills that are appropriate for their needs and abilities. Upon registration, we will ask that you choose the lesson level that best fits your child. The suggested ages listed are merely designed to serve as a guide but should not be the main determinant in selecting a class for your child. Registration deadline is the day prior to the start of class. Please plan accordingly to ensure timely registration. The LIFE Community Center is open until 6:30pm on Monday – Thursday & until 9:00pm on Friday.

OLD TOWN CAPE GIRARDEAUThis trip takes us across the Mississippi River to the old part of Cape Girardeau, the downtown area. On the itinerary is The Red House Interpretive Center which houses an early 1800’s exhibit that reflects the lives of the early settlers of the old Cape Girardeau district. We will also tour Old St. Vincent’s Church. It was built in English Gothic Revival style, very few churches of this style exist in America today. There are also the riverfront floodwall murals, the great shops, and some fantastic eating establishments to visit. Join us on October 11, 2014. We will leave from the LIFE Center at 8:30 am and return at 4:30 pm. Fee includes transportation and admission to the Red House.
