Holes Journal Name: _______________ Holes by Louis Sachar INTRODUCTION Reading for meaning Sometimes we read just to finish an assignment. Sometimes we read because we want to know the end of the story. For this book, Holes, you will need to read and respond to what you read. This is a journal that will help you pay attention to the story details, the author’s purpose, the author’s skill, and to understand the subtle use of the English language. Here you will show that you are thinking about how the story connects to your life and American culture. In the following journal pages you will demonstrate you are thinking about what you are reading. Sometimes you will find that you have to re-read because you did not ‘see’ the meaning the first time. Expectations and evaluation I will be looking for thoughtful journal entries, original ideas, and knowledge of the assigned reading section. I will evaluate your journal for: effort--skill in reading for meaning grammar usage in your entries correct word choice and spelling your ability to support your ideas with text excerpts (and page numbers we can refer to in class) Note you are required to apply the “context clues guide lines” during class readings Your answers to these journal questions and your participation in class discussions will be considered when writing comments on your semester grade for this class. Think before you write a journal entry! Write all your answers in BLUE text. Vocabulary Two types of words are marked with sticky tabs. These we will work with in class and many of these will go onto your vocabulary pages in your English B folder. 1.
