Debate Format: Oxford Style

1. Each team will issue an opening statement where there will be no interruptions. In favour will always go first, against will go second.

2. There will be a rebuttal phase, where those in favour may rebut arguments stated by those against in their opening statement.

a. Those against will have a chance for a counter rebuttal.b. This phase may happen for a maximum of two more times, for a total of three.

3. There will then be a closing statement, no longer than two minutes, which will sum up the arguments made by each side.

4. As the moderator, I reserve the right to extend each round into overtime if I deem it necessary.

5. The audience members will compile and review the notes they have taken for 5 minutes, then submit their votes on the winner.

Group responsibilities:

1. Conduct research and collect information during class time. Find articles, graphs, images, maps that support your information.

a. As a group you will construct a manifesto, an outline of what points you will make in the debate.

b. Take note of whether you are on the offensive or defensive for that topic, as that may dictate when you present certain information.

c. In your manifesto, make sure to cite all articles or websites you have taken information from using easybib.com.

d. Images, graphs, and maps can be directly copied and pasted into the word document along with the name of the person or organization that made it and in what year.

e. Make sure I have a copy of any graphs, images, or maps that you want to use, as you can direct me to project these on the screen during your opening statement or rebuttal during the debate.

f. You will hand in your manifesto and it will be graded on whether or not you constructed well-supported arguments for each of your two mission statements.

2. During the debate, you will divide your group into the following roles:a. Speaker (max 1) – You will do the talking during the debate and present the

arguments of your group.b. Recorder (max 2) – You will record points made by the opposition either by hand or

using your device.c. Fact-checker (max 2) – You will use your device to fact check information stated by

your opposition and presented to you by the recorder.d. After the opening statements, those in favour will have 1 minute to decide what

they wish to rebut first. Following the first rebuttal, those against will have 2 minutes to provide a counter rebuttal.

3. Confused still? Here is an example:

This may help as well.

Feel free to ask me any questions during class time. We will work on this Tuesday and Wednesday and get started by Thursday. We will continue on Friday if need be. Your group manifesto is due on Thursday February 16th. You must hand in a physical copy to me at the beginning of class on Thursday.

One final reminder:

Do not get UPSET or ANGRY during this discussion or there will be PENALTIES.

Use REASON and ANALYSIS to combat your opponents, NOT EMOTION. I am marking you on the STRENGTH and SUPPORT of your ARGUMENTS!!!
